Is there a reason why we have to 'guess' when a..
fight is going to start?
Its a multi million $ business FFS, can you imagine Man United Vs Liverpool Champions league final Starting sometime between 7 and 8;30?
I saw this fight as starting at 2am, 3am 3:15am and 3:45 am South African time
None of which were correct and i ended up missing the 1st 3 rounds.

Obviously it has to do with how quick the fights finish . If a fight finishes in the first rd do you think its fair for the people to wait for an extra 40 mins or so , so you can be given a definate time
Re: Is there an effing reason why we have to 'guess' when a..
It was because Green won quickly (which was unexpected) that the fight started early. If the coverage starts at 2am, then that's when you should turn it on.
Though I do agree with your point, that it's silly we have to guess when the main fight will be on. They could at least estimate and put a disclaimer stating that it could be 15 minutes either way.

Whenever I have worked on TV shows there has always been a definitive time for the big fight - if the chief support fight or any other fights finish earlier than expected the promoter is normally asked by the TV execs which fights he is using as "floaters" - unfortunately for them they literally need to be ready at anytime. I and others working on a show have always asked exactly what time the main event fighters have to be at the entrance ready to go and thats exactly the time both changing rooms are told - naturally things shift a little but normally a matter of only a few minutes if its earlier but that is very rare indeed.

I was, and still am fcuking livid about this. I set my alarm for 3am. All big fights in the USA start around 4am or later UK time, so setting up my alarm an hour earlier was my way of guaranteeing i would not miss a thing, ring walks included. I always do it this way and at 3am i poped the tv on as usual! I MISSED THE FIRST 6 FCUKING ROUNDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its a joke, every other sport has a definate starting time. Christ, i would be happy if we could at least be given an idea, an estimated time, a simple fcuking approximation of when the first bell is likely to ring! No boxing website that i am aware of (Boxrec, Seconds Out, Fight News, Boxing Scene etc etc) even attempts to give there readers an inclination of start times. Its crazy!!!!

The fights on the west coast usually start after 4am UK time but the fight was in Connecticut about as far eastern as you can get in the states.
Re: Is there an effing reason why we have to 'guess' when a..
You made a mistake with that. This was never a 4am fight. I was expecting the main fight to start at around 3am. It started something like 15, 20 minutes before, I think. The best thing to do is wake up when the coverage starts, which was at 2am.ALI wrote:I was, and still am fcuking livid about this. I set my alarm for 3am. Also, if recording, always record for a period after the coverage ends, because they often overrun.

It wasn't on before 2am. It was just before 3am.Riddick Blowe wrote:if i'd have known this fight would be on before 2 i would have stayed up for it. Ah well that's how it goes.

East coast fight sometimes start earlier but often they are on around the same time as the Vegas/LA ones. Anyway, I'm with KG and ALI here. Was going to watch it in a bar in Bangkok, as I usually do for the US fights here, and the main events typically start around 10 or 11am. This time, I woke leisurely at 9 and received a text from KG at 9.15 to say it was round 6 already! So I didn't bother going because it would have been over by the time I got there. Lowersmiths also missed it... turned up at a bar in time for the post-fight wrap-up. So the fight obviously started at a much earlier time than can be reasonably expected after many years of watching US fights on TV.

I depends how you view it, KG. The CARD probably starts on time and always does. After that, proceedings continue until they finish.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:fight is going to start?

You could do it the other way, and simply budget for each fight going the distance, but then you'd have people in the arena being forced to sit around and wait for long periods of time in between fights. Some of the cards I've been to have had this, to accommodate TV, and I have to say it sucks. It's far better when the fights come thick and fast, and, unfortunately, with boxing, you can't plan for the length of time a fight will last.
Perhaps there's a point to be made that would argue that since the majority of the money – and certainly most of the viewers for big fights – come from TV, more should be done to accomodate them, but I still rather like the idea that the guys actually paying to go and see it are thought of – and besides, being a true boxing fan, you DO want to watch the undercard, too, right? So if you know when that starts, which you should, then it doesn’t matter.
Does that answer your goddamn question?
How the devil are you, anyway? Haven't seen you slumming it with us lot for a while, and now it turns out that you hang with Fennel on occassion. What's THAT about?
Re: Is there a reason why we have to 'guess' when a..
its the tv companies that decide, its all decided before the bill starts, there is no reason for the public not to know, they have 'swing' fights to fit in the gaps.

The amount of people who wandered in bleary eyed at about 9:30 squinted at the screen, saw it was round 10 and exclaimed "For fcuks sake" and left was most amusing.oliverfennell wrote:East coast fight sometimes start earlier but often they are on around the same time as the Vegas/LA ones. As what the fact i had convinced the Landlord the night before to put on a 'boxers breakfast' promotion with cut price bloody marys and full English, because there would be 'at least 15 people coming down to watch the fight'
Number of half price beakfasts sold - 1, number of bloody marys sold - 1
Well it saved me a couple of quid anyway

HBO are even more precise than any other!!!rhino222 wrote:its the tv companies that decide, its all decided before the bill starts, there is no reason for the public not to know, they have 'swing' fights to fit in the gaps.
Their floor manager who I am glad Rhino you never met otherwise you would have tried to get her in the sack - but anyhow - I remember on the 2 Vegas bills in 2007 - she made sure I had the fighters at the entrance at precise minute she stipulated - and if any of the trainers gave me or her any sh*t she soon put them in there place!!!
I really cannot understand what happened with this Froch/Taylor fight - sorry to be the suspicious tw*t but I honestly have the feeling things may have been done on purpose to f*ck people around!!! - when the real time of the fight was known all along - sorry if I am wrong!!!

Not always, when they/we switch over it gets really annoying/confusing because it isn't at the same time.banjo wrote:The fights on the west coast usually start after 4am UK time but the fight was in Connecticut about as far eastern as you can get in the states.
Spud, is the HBO bird you're referring to have dark hair and glasses?

If it's the one I'm thinking of she reminds me of an office worker from the 80s.
Rhino probably still would, though.

"no change there, then" just said the ghost of Reg Gutteridge, who haunts my apartment.

Re: Is there a reason why we have to 'guess' when a..
Is it so important to have 7 or more undercard fights though. I understand Froch-Taylor needed all the help it could get with regards to ticket sales, but generally for these big title events, if it was kept down to say, 4 fights on the card then it should not be to much of a problem to nail down the starting time for the main event! Christ, most people dont turn up for the really early fights anyway! You could do it the other way, and simply budget for each fight going the distance, but then you'd have people in the arena being forced to sit around and wait for long periods of time in between fights. i put 5 Live radio on at 4.30am and assumed they weren't covering it. I anticipated it would be about to start but I was only going to turn it off anyway as wanted to watch the ITV4 show on Sunday.
turns out it went out at about 1 or 2am UK time and 5 Live did a decent job on it.
I'm glad I didn't know the result as that last round was pure drama.

Boxing is such an 'event' type sport, so immediate that catching the reply is no substitute whatsoever.
I used to hate it when SKY knew full well the fight was gonna start at 4am, but from 1am onwards all they could manage was 'coming right up' instead of being honest
ugh
