Lindsay - British/Irish?

Post by finchy36 »

Did anyone else detect the irony of Martin Lyndsey's victory at the weekend? Fantastic performance but I was a bit miffed when he actually won the BRITISH title that his team all draped themselves in the Irish tricalore. I know he is from Northern Ireland and that falls within the British Isles, but if he and his team see themselves as Irish and not British then surely his principles should have not allowed him to fight for the title - Appleby yes - British title no.

I don't want to get all political, but having spent time in Northern Ireland I know that many Catholics would not want to be associated with Britain. Hopefully this is a sign of sport overcoming political divide.

Contradiction???

If this is a sign of sport overcoming political divides then why do you say his principles should not have allowed him to fight for the title?

Ridiculous post.

If all the people who that contributed to the numerous posts on this subject contribute again we will get the same responses. it may run for about 4 pages at worst. He is Irish but also British same as apple being Scottish but British. Im a little concerned that you have a problem with tricolour.

dr. - fair comment - Just read back my own post and it does read like contradiction - but my point stands. Why rave about being Irish and proud then fight for the British title? I wouldn't want to be the FRench champion. weird

Actually I take that back. It's not me being contradicting it is Lyndsey and his team. So no, not a ridiculous post. Know your nationality and live with it. Don't crash the better nations title for 'personal' ambitions.

I see it as being fighters and not where they come from I dont see myself as being too nationlistic,
If moore draped himself in the jack or georges cross after he won his irish title he would of been under pressure, but the union jack may be very offensive to millions around the world .

It's not the same as being Scottish and British, as Scotland is part of the UK, whereas the tricolour is the Republic of Ireland's flag. If he had used a St Patrick's cross (red saltire on white background), which is the flag of All-Ireland, as it appears in Union flag, that would have been similar.

However, it could be said to be similar to those boxers who have Jamaican, Italian etc flags on their shorts.

gobbles, that's a great reply. I guess my connection with Ireland clouded my judgement. As an Englshman I would want to fly the St. Georges cross with the Union Flag - just as a West Indian or African Brit would fly their own nationality flag along with the Union (ala Amir Khan and Prince Naseem who flew two flags).

But the majority of Scots, Welsh and Irish can't stand the English or British association and make it clear whenever possible.

As for that muppet metro-whatever - the British flag is offensive? F**k off and get back to your guardian. I'm British and proud and before you accuse me of racism I am of mixed raced and married to a beautiful Irish woman so go back and support your labour chums. In the real world.....oh, I'm not even going there - this is a boxing forum.........

Im not offended by the british flag as im not too nationlistic in certain senses so no need to launch a little atttack , tbh although i keep an eye on english politics i dont have a political leaning although i would find it hard to like cameron. It remains a fact that the british flag does offend people and im not going go into reasons or have history lesson on a boxing forum.
All i all getting back on track i dont think anyone should give out about a lad fighting for a brit title and flying there flad as it represents the whole of ireland , religously

Your arguments are simplistic, ignorant (in the true sense of the word) and contradictory.

Maybe you managed to have missed it but there has been a war in Ireland for most of the last 800 years over this issue and its not a topic that one can grasp in a single sentence.

If you really want to understand the subject (although I suspect you just want to have some sort of rant) then just ask and I can point you in the direction of some reading material that will give you a decent foundation with regards the subject.

Are you also concerned that Haye has the flag of Cyprus on his shorts?
I appreciate they may be catholics from Northern Ireland who may refuse to fight for the Lonsdale belt, but it is for the benefit of British boxing that he is willing to fight for our title, coming from Northern Ireland he has every right to, at worst he is using it to move himself forward and at best he feels sports cut across this divide.
They certainly don't have any problems with this in rugby.
I don't believe in causing problems where there are none

I was part of that war so don't even go there. Apologies to metro, having read your reply I understand you are not and cannot speak correct English through no fault of your own. I apologise for presuming otherwise.

I'm here to chat boxing - not politics - so I won't go any further with this despite any replies I might receive.

My point was the irony - doesn't anyone else get it?

An Englishman that doesn't like the French wouldn't even think about fighting for the French title. Is it me or does no one else get the IRONY?

No ignorance or racist under tones. I thought it was a legit question.

Just read coco's post before I sent this. LET ME SET IT STRAIGHT. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT AT ALL. I'M MIXED RACED MARRIED INTO AN IRISH FAMILY AND HAVE NOT A SINGLE RACIST OR RELIGIOUS OVERTONE BONE IN MY BODY. I WAS POINTING OUT THE IRONY. F**K ME SOME PEOPLE ARE EITHER IGNORANT OR STUPID.

Read the post and digest before spouting your Guardianistic values.

Haye is my favourite fighter at the moment and actually a guy I have met several times. The Cypriot flag on his shorts is a recognition to the place where he trains as he has so much respect for them which is great. You didn't think he was Greek did you?

I'm ending my involvement in this post as I don't think you people realise I was pointing out the irony and NOT having a dig at anyone.

there was irony and sarcasm there? yeah!

Do you think its OK for "British" people from Northern Ireland - such as Wayne McCullough, Carl Frampton and others to fight and respresent Ireland at the Olympics?

Luckily Irish boxing isnt full of ignorant bitter wee bigots like you!
