Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
?
Joe made 21 title defences, Froch has made his first. I don't want this thread to be a row about who's best.
Anyway, who has faced the most mandatory challengers of their respective titles?

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
well calzaghe he made 21 defences of his world title and froch has only had 25 fights so at the moment all title includes calzaghe is miles ahead he made 22 world title defences 21 WBO super middle, 1 IBF super middle
then add on his british and other title defences
then add on his british and other title defences
Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
You are avoiding the question. Anyone with a title is supposed to fight mandatory challengers - to justify their ttile. Now, I repeat, which mandatories did Joe make?
Froch count: 1 (Taylor, 1st title defence)
Calzaghe count: 2 (Veit 1, Veit 2, defences #8 and #16) - any others?
if this is right, Calzaghe has faced 1 more mandatory, but they've both faced the same # of ppl in mandatory title defences
did Joe have any other mandatory title defences??

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
Calzaghe made two mandatories, Veit and the new and improved Veit MkII
Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
Yeah, he screwed over Brian Magee and a sold out Kings Hall in Belfast to rematch Veit...
Must have been a big favour to get him out of that fight.
Froch offered to step in and fight Magee with 48 hours notice i recall..
Northern Ireland’s Magee was due to have challenged WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe on the event, but the Welshman has apparently been withdrawn as the WBO were unable to sanction the contest.
Magee, however, need not miss out on an appearance in his front of his fans.
“If the Board of Control clear it, I am happy to get on a plane right now and fly to Ireland to defend my British and Commonwealth super middleweight titles against Magee tomorrow night,” said Nottingham’s Carl Froch.
“I am not worried at the prospect of going into his backyard on short notice. I would knock him clean out with only twenty minutes preparation on the pads.
“I was in training for a fight in Los Angeles last month that unfortunately got cancelled, but I haven’t been out of the gym since, so I am bang on my weight.
“I am now going to be making my American debut in April, but I am more than happy to fight Magee in the interim.
“I am that kind of fighter; I will take on anyone, anywhere.

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
i would say their mandatories are equal then, seeing as though veit and veit are the same person
is it not insane that there is a legit debate, on the subject of a ten year champ and a six month champ?

JC ducked Freeman Barr!
Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
When was that GOmez?
Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
i recall this. universum had veit as interim champ or mandatory and threatened the calzaghe-magee contest, a voluntary. universum were probably hoping that joe - with his documented weight problems at the time - would vacate and fight for the IBF light heavy belt. joe pulled out the magee fight, trained for a few more weeks and went and fought veit - again.G0mez wrote:Yeah, he screwed over Brian Magee and a sold out Kings Hall in Belfast to rematch Veit...

JC actually wanted Freeman Barr. FW spilled the beans in his post split up with Joe column.Coco wrote:JC ducked Freeman Barr!
I know Mkrtchian beat Barr. Did that make Mkrtchian mandatory? Does Joe's whopping mandatory count come to #3, or does it stop at a measly #2?

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
Mkrtchian was a mandatory - his fight with Freeman Barr was an eliminator. But its not like the WBO enforce mandatories, unless the mandatory challenger happens to have a powerful promoter behind him. 3 mandatories in 21 defences....hmmmm........Autobarn wrote:JC actually wanted Freeman Barr. When was the Magee fight scheduled for? Was it before or after Magees multiple knockdown loss to Reid?
Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
How many mandatories did Hatton make as WBU champ!

Bika was IBF mandatory
Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
Are you sure?
I thought Bika was optional.
His previous fight was a TD draw with Beyer so I can't see how he became IBF mandatory. Granted, Rudy Markussen wouldn't fight Joe, and I think the Dane was top contender in the IBF. Markussen got stopped by Tatevosyan same night as Joe beat Bika, I think.

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
At the time they were offering Calzaghe silly money to 'rematch' Veit, his highest payday up until Kessler I recall
Is he supposed to turn that down to fight Matrix in Belfast, which would have been embarrasingly one sided anyway. I think we can agree that Joe wouldnt have had anywhere near the trouble that Froch did

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
Mkrtchian was a mandatory and so was Thornberry. The WBO have a rule that if you become a super champion (over about 8 defences) you only have to face a mandatory every 2 1/2 years. So Calzaghe faced 4.

Re: Who's faced most mandatories, Calzaghe or Froch
On the one hand, people complain about enforced mandatories, and on the other, they complain when someone doesn't take enough of them.
Would Calzaghe's legacy really have been enhanced by fighting Freeman Barr and Robert Stielglitz?
What Froch did in his first defence was very, very admirable, but simply saying "Joe didn't fight many mandatories, while Froch has fought 1/1" is a very simple way to assess the two boxers.
I'm sure we'll all agree Lacy, Kessler and Hopkins were worth infinitely more than the majority of alphabet-appointed mandatories (and are still worth more than Taylor, as good a result as it was Froch).

well no doubt Froch will be fighting the Ward/Miranda winner, the next likely mandatoryoliverfennell wrote:On the one hand, people complain about enforced mandatories, and on the other, they complain when someone doesn't take enough of them.

whereas calzaghe fought 4 in 9 years
sanctioning bodies should make their champs fight good mandatories, simple as

Calzahghe - less than 20%
Froch - 50%
