Hatton given nightmares by Erislandy Lara in sparring?

Post by jeej »

Sorry if this has been mentioned elsewhere, but I just read a Kevin Mitchell article on the Guardian site and in it he said...
More relevantly for British fans, Lara reportedly gave Ricky Hatton such a torrid time in sparring three weeks ago he was asked to leave his Las Vegas training camp. He obviously has the right attitude to this business.
Anyone know more details bout this story?

Standard practise. Manny hits harder than most 140lb'ers I imagine so they got a biger guy in to get him used to that sort of incoming power while he is faster than most 140lb'ers so i imagine they got in some lighter guys to get him used to that fast footwork and hand speed.

I've heard Hatton say he never goes all out in sparring, rather he uses it to work on and try new things.

I think this is a concern. Hatton never performs well against southpaws. I can't remember a fight where it hasn't caused him trouble. And this, combined with the story of friction in the camp, should worry those backing Hatton.

I also seem to remember on 24/7 that Roach said that the guy Pacquiao knocked out with a body shot had given Hatton trouble in sparring for one of his fights.

There seems to be some legitimate concern that Manny could cut Ricky very early as he is far more susceptible to get facial cuts from a southpaw. Hatton has had his fair share of problems with cuts over the years and it makes me wonder how likely a stoppage on cuts could happen by about round 7.

Well, Ricky has a great deal of mental strength and he knows how to fight and win with cuts that would discourage others.

My big concern is Hatton getting hit repeatedly on the chin by Pacquiao's left cross and right hook and getting knocked out. Hatton has to hold his own in the first four. If he does that, he has a chance. The closer the fight gets, though, the more I think he won't.
