Pat drew with Tiger in one of those meetings and was a brilliant boxer who won a Lonsdale Belt outright and fought and won regularly in the States.
Terry Downes outscored the faded Birkenhead stylist in his very last fight, and said of him: "McAteer went through 40 fights without defeat - which is quite a feat - before a South African, Jimmy Elliott, outpointed him. A year later McAteer went to South Africa and stopped him in six rounds. Elliott died after the fight.
"He was a good-looking fellah, with dark wavy hair, and by the look of him he hadn't been hit too much. I was often out-jabbing him, which was Mac's game. I suppose McAteer was realizing before the fight was over that he'd come to the end of the road. I respected him for retiring."
Pat, of course, was the uncle of footballer Jason. His younger brother, Les, later lifted the same British and Commonwealth middleweight titles held by Pat. Quite a family. Quite a fighter.
