The New York Golden Gloves Championships

Post by Boxingmad »

Am I right in thinking that the NY Golden Gloves has a novice tourney, ie if you win it, that's it. You don't progress to the Nationals.

Did Tyson, Breland, Bowe and Zab Judah all win the NY GG? Any other big names?

Have any British fighters ever won it? I know Adrian Dodson did in 1989, but was that novice or open? A fella called Simon "Sugarfree" Somerville did too, apparently. Am I right?

17 years old Luis Orlando Del Valle won it this year at 126 pounds open class then went on to win the nationals at Kansas. Hes currently ranked 5 on usaboxing.org keep an eye on this kid he will be making a lot of noise till the 2008 games. Right now hes still deciding if he stays in Puerto Rico or in the states. The kid has a lot of potential and an awesome warrior style he will make it big in the pro ranks if every thing keeps going this way.

Didn't Michael Flatley from RiverDance compete in this tournament once?

I think so. Wasn't sure if it was a City or State tourney though.
