A boxer has been banned from all pubs and clubs in Plymouth after attacking a man on the floor outside a nightclub. Damon Ware, who turns pro on the Scott Dann British title show in Plymouth on September 17, used his fists in a vicious attack with two other men which left their victim needing six plates in his jaw to keep it together.
Ware pleaded guilty to affray with two other men at Plymouth Crown Court yesterday.
Recorder John Trevaskis told the trio they were banned from every pub and club in the city for the next two years.
But, he said, they would be able to enter pubs or clubs for employment reasons - which means 18-year-old Ware will be able to enter the Plymouth Pavilions to make his debut at light-welterweight.
CCTV footage of the brawl - in which up to a dozen people were involved - was shown to the court yesterday. Ware and his two companions had been sitting in a Ford Fiesta car outside the Jesters nightclub but a fight broke out so they left the car and joined in.
They were seen attacking a man on the floor before walking back to the Fiesta and leaving the scene.
The victim was taken to Derriford Hospital where he spent three days undergoing surgery. He had six plates screwed into his jaw to keep it together. He has, it is believed, now made a full recovery.
Recorder Trevaskis labelled the attack as 'cowardly' and 'disgraceful' and ordered the men to pay £850 each at a rate of £30 a week, which, he said, would be about the same as the men would have spent "going out drinking".
He told the men: "I have seen the video evidence of that incident and it is undoubtedly a most disgraceful incident perpetrated in the centre of this city.
"What I clearly see in the video is you involved yourselves in a violent and cowardly attack on a victim who was on the floor."
Recorder Trevaskis said he had taken into account the guilty pleas and, he said, a custodial sentence could have been justified if the guilty pleas had not been entered.
Ware, who works as a scaffolder, told the Plymouth Herald following yesterday's case that the conviction would not affect his pending pro career.
He said: "The ASBO has done me a big favour because it keeps me away from pubs and clubs and I can concentrate on my boxing."

How did the guy stat out of prison? If he had already turned pro, it would almost certainly have been 'assault with a deadly weapon'

I think any boxer convicted of a serious offence (and affray is serious), has his licence pulled. At least, I would hope they would.

Bennie your dedication to your chosen sport amazes me, i assume you got this from the Herald which is my local paper but I must have completely missed it.

This sort of thing is a pretty regular occurance outside Jester's it's ruff as dogs in there. Ironically Jesters is about a hundred meters away from Plymouth Pavillions were Ware will be fighting

Whilst this incident appears to be an ugly one and I agree with the views here on Ware, I'm not sure there should be an automatic ban for boxing in all cases of violence. I mean, the Dean Francis incident was completely understandable and he should have actually been applauded (if what I've read is true) not suspended.

I do think the BBBoC should monitor the behaviour of boxers more closely - why is Scott Gammar banned from most pubs in his area? Also, Kevin Evans (the Amateur) has a reputation for being a it handy in the pubs in his area. All of this of course is alledged and I don't know why Gammar is barred.

No, it's a great place really. History, the sea, decent pubs and clubs, if you know what you're looking for, greatest football team in the world, right on the edge of Dartmoor, lovely really (although I'm biased

). It does have it's twats and crap bits, but show me somewhere that doesn't. Union Street is just one of those places: squaddies + matelots + students + chavs + a road full of clubs = bother. That said, I've drunk in some of the worst boozers in the city, and never had any bother, but if you go looking for it...
