Why do British refs. suck so bad?
A couple weeks ago I watched 101 knockouts on fox sports net. All the knockouts were from the UK. About half were stoped VERY early. Not to mention the horrible disgrace of a stoppage when Lewis fought McCall. That ref. should be killed. So why is this so. Did a ref. get in trouble for not stopping a fight in wich a fighter was killed or seriously injured or something?

No way are British refs the worst in the world, Mickey Vann, John Coyle, Terry O'Connor and Dave Parris are all great refs. Just because they don't always let fighters get bludgeoned to death and air on the side of cution doesn't mean they are crap. Look at someof the guys who take European title fights, they are often awful.
I dont agree, I think most, if not all, EBU refs have a very high standard.steve689 wrote:No way are British refs the worst in the world, Mickey Vann, John Coyle, Terry O'Connor and Dave Parris are all great refs. Hmm. Thankfully, British refs tolerance of violence is not as high as yours! We have good refs in generalThe Scranton Assassin wrote:That ref. should be killed.
And Razor - I couldn't agree more! What a fat, useless twat he was.

I actually believe American refs are the worst in the world. It drives me up the wall when, after a fighter has landed a superb body shot, in comes the American ref with his "keep them up!" mantra. Richard Steele was awful for that. Also, American referees are too close to the action. Mitch Halpern, for example, did his best to spoil the first Morales-Barrera classic by hovering inches from the fighters during the exchanges.
You know a referee has done a good job when you haven't noticed him. American referees forget that.

The worst in my humble experience is Paul Thomas as a judge (always scores 120-108 to the home fighter or is it just me) and from there I would say the other black referee (not Ian John-Lewis who is excellent) the other one I've seen.
He refereed Mittoo v Gwyn Wale and Wale used the elbow, head, shoulder and short of kicking Arv as well left nothing to chance.
The referee did nothing - it was a sham.
He always looks tentaive, nervous in fights and I have no faith in his officiating at all, fighters never break on his instruction - he's always physically squeezing himself between them and forcing them apart.
I like Richie Davies - he takes some beating.
Micky Van refereeing 15 Hatton fight on the trot or whatever it was was wrong. I'm not doubting Moickey's integrity but that was plain wrong.

I agree with bennie about the low blow thing, American refs seem intent on ruining the art of the body shot with there incessant cries of "Keep them up" also another thing that annoys me is when the yank refs jump in unnecessarily and shout something like "Come on guys let's go" during a lull in the action, fair enough if the fight is dull but i was watching Kassim Ouma-JC Candelo on the Freitas-Grigorian undercard and after giving each other hell for 9 or so rounds there was a brief holding session and then both men dropped back and took a breather while sizing each other up. Ref Michael Ortega quickly jumps in and screams something inane like "Come on guys let's go"...even the Showtime commentator complained, it was totally unneeded.

Wow, this turned out to be a pretty interesting thread. and in only a day too. Some american refs are horrible too but there is nothing I hate worse than a fight being stopped when it shouldn't be. I didn't know the Lewis- Mcall ref was mexican. Thanks for that info. I hope he is dead by now. there is no way Lewis shouldn't have been alowed to continue. It pisses me off so bad because in both of Lewis' losses he beat the count but was not allowed to continue. If he was ,he prob. would still be undefeted and would go down as the num. 3 or 2 or maybe even num 1 heavy of all time. For some reason american fans don't seem to ever give Lewis credit for all he has accomplished. I mean come on. He beat every fighter he's ever faced. The only other champ to do that was Marciano. And Tunney if you only count his carrer at heavyweight.

I have to say it is doubtful Lewis could have continued in either, he was on 'queer street' as they say. However, Riddick Bowe was all over the place and was allowed to continue against Holyfield....The Scranton Assassin wrote:Wow, this turned out to be a pretty interesting thread. and in only a day too. I did feel that the referee's in both fights were pretty keen to step in there and end it. Having said that, a referee's job is a hard one, if they get it wrong, someone can get permanently disabled or killed in there.
