Joe Bugner and Kallie Knoetze somebody know them?

Somebody know or remember these 2 forgotten boxers Joe Bugner and Kallie Knoetze?

I saw them both playing in movies of Bud Spencer.

Any comments of information are welcome

Bugner was a good boxer with great durability but no power. Knoetze was the opposite. Great power but no boxing skill and no chin.

Although a fighter I've never managed to warm to Bugner was a good defence Boxer, with good durability and a great chin. He tended to run hot and cold but when in the mood was not a great fighter but made it difficult for fighters who were (or thought they were). Many who were around at the time said one of his finest performances was losing on points to Smokin' Joe Frazier. But many critized Bugner for his lackluster challange against the aging Ali. Many thought he could have tried A LOT harder that night.

IMO Bugner if in the UK today in his prime and in the right mood would have the beating of Williams, Harrison, Skelton, Hide and McDermott. Although Lewis would have been too much for him.

I've never seen Kallie Knoetze fight, but for what it's worth a South Africain lady I met about a year ago said he was very popular in his home country, more so than Gerrie Coatzee.

Also Kallie Knoetze has played in a Bud Spencer movie called Big Bomber (1982) a movie about boxing.

But Joe Bugner did played in several movies with Bud Spencer the ones i know are:

The sheriff and the satelite kid (1979)
Buddy goes west (1980)
Im for the hippotamus (1979)
They called him bulldozer (1978)

A while ago (about 2 decades) I saw highlights of his loss to Gerrie Coetzee, so that fight should be available on film.

Watched him fight John Tate (on TV). Tate travelled to South Africa and wore Knoetze down for an easy stoppage in defence of his WBA title. Knoetze never got to grips with a talented champion who had won his title with another easy win over Knoetze's bitter rival Gerrie Coetzee (points).

I have the Ring Magazine issue with the Tate-Knoetze report and its described just like bennie says. Knoetze was no match for Big John, However that was a non title fight, Tate won the vacant WBA belt the very next fight against Coetzee.

Oh, sorry. The old memory again. Took some balls for Tate to fight Knoetze in front of thousands of pro-Knoetze supporters in the era of apartheid.
Remember it was an outdoors fight.

Speaking of Coetzee, I recall his fight with Tate. It was outdoors and it started to rain, making the canvas very slippery. There were at least two instances where Gerrie tagged Tate hard, but slipped when he tried to follow up. I still think if it hadn't been for that rain, he would've knocked Tate out.

i've got knoetzee getting beat up by tate on video. pretty boring.

knoetzee did chin living legend duane bobick though.

knoetzee was okay, but more coetzer than coetzee, duplooy or sanders.

i don't think that Bugner is really hated in the UK,

Bugner seems to think he is hated over here, most people would say he has respect here, we just think he never really fulfilled his potential.

From films I have seen of these two and from what I have read and what I hear, they were pretty good.

Came around at the wrong time.

I would guess if they were young bucs today they would both have at least one of the many titles.

Joe Bugner, had a dubious start to his career by getting KO'ed in his 1st fight!!! He was quite a big puncher in his early days, his next 13 fights after being KO'ed, he won 12 by KO. He apparently lost his mean streak after one of his opponents, Ulric Regis died after their fight. Joe said he couldn't punch people as hard after this tragedy but he was still a fine boxer, with good hand speed, boxing ability and a great chin.

He fought some great fighters losing on points to Ali twice, Ron Lyle and Joe Frazier. Joe was famously photographed partying hours after losing to Ali while Ali was rushed to hospital with dehydration.

He wasn't particularly popular in the UK after getting a dubious decision over Henry Cooper. This and the fact that Bugner liked the sound of his own voice meant he wasn't a nation favourite.

He ended his career with a record of 69 wins (41 ko's), 13 losses and 1 draw

I agree with your above points but I also think another factor to his lack of popularity in the UK was than there was the perception that although he had all the physical atributes to be a World beater his heart never really seemed to be in the sport and in many of his defeats he could of tried a LOT harder.

Has the British boxing public forgiven Joe for beating 'Enery? The Bruno fight must have gone a fair way towards it

Saw some of the highlights of that one back in '87 and the crowd were like rabid dogs

To be honest not completely IMO. However I think it depends on your age, If you are old enough to remember watching the Bugner V Cooper fight live, the grudge may run deeper than myself who was a babe in arms at the time of the fight.

As it happens I'm nit a fan of Cooper or Bugner.
