Which British Boxer could gain the Hatton Fanbase?

Post by exittored »

If Hatton Retires than there would be a void for these supporters to fill and yes even though most of them are Man City hardcore fans who attached themselves to Hatton due to him wearing the city colours, there are also alot of other fans outside Manchester who supported him too so who is the most likely Boxer these Fan's may start following now?

Here are the Possible Boxer's who could get some of his Fanbase:

John Murray
Jamie Moore
Amir Khan
Carl Froch
David Haye
Bernard Dunne(irish)
Kevin Mitchell
Kell Brook
Darren Barker

what do u think?

Jamie Moore deserves to as he's criminally under-appreciated except by 'hardcore' fans. For me he really ticks all the boxes - been in some thrilling fights, has overcome adversity, never bigs himself up and has quietly turned himself into a world-class operator.

Sadly this is probably true as without generalizing too much, i'd say there was a right wing element to some of his supporters!

Hattons fans come across more as fans of the man, not fans of the sport. As such, when Hatton fucks off then they probably won't go looking for another boxer to follow.

John Murray - Possibly but nowhere near the vast amount of people who followed Hatton
Jamie Moore - Ditto
Amir Khan - Did you hear them boo him? Not a chance
Carl Froch - Probably wouldn't know him if they fell over him
David Haye - See Murray and Moore
Bernard Dunne(irish) - The ones with Irish backgrounds might do
Kevin Mitchell - Unlikely, although some might
Kell Brook - Definitely, until they realise that Kell Brook is a young man and not the Nuts magazine centrefold
Darren Barker - Same as Froch

Hatton masterminded his fan base, Hamed did too. Even if other fighters reach the dizzy heights of Hatton, which few will because they aren't good enough, they don't have the marketability of a Hatton or public relations work ethic of the man or Hamed either for that matter

Having said all that Khan will get near Hatton's popularity because of his massive exposure and potential world level ability. But he won't be quite as popular as 'The Man of the People'

Khan-Hatton will be a blockbuster

In answer to the question in the title of the thread:

Amir Khan would get close - but he has to win the world title to do so.

David Haye might but again he has to beat the Klitschko's to do so.

The only other fighter who is starting out who has anything like the fan base Hatton did as a young professional boxer is Tony Jeffries - now if he is matched correctly - he is the one who could match Hatton - but then is he capable of reaching world title levels - we will see!!!

Spot on mate.

It started with Manchester City fans whose team had no success and the nation then woke up to a bloke who loved a pint and a laugh who we can could identify with. They would love their hero to be a footballer, but they are not in the real world. The last footballer Joe Public could identify with was Paul Gascoigne.

I think that Mathew Macklin has the potential to attract large crowds based on the Elcock atmosphere and his cross nationality appeal (Brum and Eire.) He also has that all action style.
Going by what i saw a couple of weeks ago Martin Lyndsay has a hell of a following. young Tony Jeffries also seems to be getting a hell of a backing already.
Hatton was a bit of phenomenon though. His following was incredible though for the most part he delivered the results to justify it. He easily got the most attention of any fighter since Prince Naz. :TU:

I think Naz's popularity stemmed from the fact that a) he was unconventional in the ring b) gained massive exposure on ITV on the way up and c) he was such a w++ker - people tuned in/turned up to see him get knocked out as much as to see him win. His arrogance was what riled people and they wanted him flat on his back.

To be honest, i can't really see anyone ever getting a following like Hatton. He really was unique. If ever there was someone who could have, it was Audley Harrison. Big giant heavyweight, Olympic champion, first 10 starts live on the BBC - that was an opportunity with so much potential but as we all know it didn't work out. The chap needs to be Hattonesque in his mannerisms, ie. approachable, have a laugh, drink until you burst etc, needs to be able to fight (Audley couldn't) and most importantly, get massive exposure on terrestrial TV. Khan hasn't quite got it, and the easy blowouts/soft matchmaking from you-know-who didn't help. And I'm still not sure if Khan can fight.

If Haye becomes undisputed Hwt Champ then the whole country will be behind him. At least for a bit, then he will be derided for being big headed and people will laugh when he loses.

Funny old world.

Tony Jefferies has the best chance...........massive hometown backing from Sunderland. Lets see how far he goes in the pro game, if he gets to world title level his fan base could match that of Ricky Hatton
