DOES LUCIA RIJKER BELONG IN THE HALL OF FAME?

Post by oldwarrior »

This may be a dud post or maybe it'll spark some interest; but to my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong), there is no female that has been inducted into the boxing hall of fame at Canestoga.

Lucia Rijker on May 20, 2009 will have been out of the ring for 5 years. Does she qualify and/or deserve to be inducted? I say that she should be the first.

A lot of ways to look at this: Who did she fought considering the level of competition? What she did for the sport? What about women's boxing in general?

Does someone else deserve the honor first such as Laila Ali, Ann Wolfe or Christy Martin? Or wait a few more years and start a women's Hall of Fame with a list of initial inductee's?

Agree or disagree

Rijker, Ali, and Wolfe should have all fought each other. Might have sparked some interest in a now dead women's boxing.

No woman should ever be an inductee. They suck too much, simply put. Sorry to offend the PC-brigade, but women shouldn't be permitted to box, & it's nothing to do with a safety issue --- their absolute incompetence in combat cheapens the sports image.

Interesting question, oldwarrior!
I disagree with those who think that women's boxing sucks, that women shouldn't fight, etc. I enjoy watching a competitive women's bout; okay, so it's not usually world-class action, maybe, but I can still enjoy it just the way I would a prelim 4-rounder featuring a couple of modestly talented guys putting in a good effort. I respect women boxers.
In principle, I think that the HOF should be open to women. However, I don't think any woman so far deserves inclusion. None has had the real impact on boxing that it takes; none has gotten mainstream attention outside of temporary curiosity. Quality of competition also stands in the way, since there aren't enough good opponents for a candidate (e.g. Rijker) to build up a sufficiently convincing record. It is possible (though perhaps doubtful) that a woman in the future should enter the HOF, but it isn't now.
In competitive chess, most countries (like the U.S.) allow women to compete in the "Open Championship," and then hold separate tournaments to determine the "Women's Champion." So far, a woman hasn't won the U.S. national Open Championship. But that doesn't mean they shouldn't have a chance. I think this is a sensible approach for this issue in boxing, too; allow women in principle to be in the main hall of Canestoga, but also have a separate wing featuring women's boxing greats.
