Dempsey had some trouble with a few 175lbers of note. Tunney, Carpentier & Gibbons were all successful at some stage in their bouts with him, & of those, only Tunney clearly ranks as a better man than Spinks, IMO.

Even so, Spinks was capable as a Heavyweight, but had none of the versatility, durability, or confidence above LHW which so possessed Tunney, & that was against a faded Dempsey. The prime incarnation gets Spinks out of there in three. Fast, athletic, & explosively powerful --- Dempsey is going to find Spinks, perhaps not immediately, but he'll end it when he does. He's at least the finisher Tyson was. At least.

Diego Corrales vs. Ricky Hatton over twelve rounds at 140. Let's say, upon beating Castillo, Corrales moves up around the same time Hatton has dethroned Tszyu, circa 2005...

A shock second-round knockdown leaves Marquez hanging on for the final thirty seconds of the round, with Freitas in hot pursuit --- but that's the full extent of Popo's competitive streak in this one, as Dynamita otherwise alternatingly pummels & out-manoeuvres him from bell-to-bell, ring post-to-ring post. Freitas is wobbled by an uppercut-right hook combination early in the closing round, to boot.

Final scores of 117-110, 117-110 & 118-109 crown Marquez as the comfortable victor.

At a catchweight between Welter & Jr. Middle, Mosley & Forrest meet for a third time. Scenario? Right now, May, '08...

May 08? Or 09?

Mosley rips Forrest a new one. Forrest is still a technically proficient fighter, but Sugar has aged like a fine wine, and has proven his power at Welter. Throw on a few more pounds, and I think he batters Vernon after about 4 or 5 rounds of softening a slower opponent up. No stoppage, as Forrest still has enough savvy to avoid the kill shot, but a clear decision. Mosley UD.

mugabi at that point in his long career was a force to be reckoned with.
here he reveals pavlik to be the pretty ordinary fighter that he is. the beast shades the first round but in the 2nd lands heavily as pavlik comes in. in the 3rd body shots begin to tear into kelly and a body to head combo has pavlik on the ropes. he survives. a quieter 4th is followed by a another quieter round except for a right hook from mugabi that induces a delayed reaction in pavlik but he ends up being counted out anyway.

mugabi KO 5

Langford weathers Dempsey's storm to go the distance, but Dempsey's perpetual punching off sets most of Langford's attempts to score big on the Manassa Mauler. Dempsey takes it by decision.

Vargas' corner retire their faded charge at the end of round eleven, in the corner. He came to win, & put up a fairly good fight in the process, but McCallum was never going to lose this one.

Marquez does EXACTLY the job MAB did on Hamed, takes it by 4-6 points while having the odd little moment from naz's speed/power/freakiness.

Next:

okay... how about, middleweight king Carlos Monzon goes up to 175 and fights Dwight Muhammad Qawi...

winner faces Sadd Muhammad

Monzon takes a shellacking in the early going and makes intelligent mid course adjustments which wins him a close UD over Qawi. It is credited to pure genius ring generalship and Monzon refuses another sortie in the LH division and loses the fight with Saad by default.

Two bad behavior specialists face off. Kostya Tszyu suffers an injury and must call off his dance date with Zab, Paul has been training for another fight and is willing to mix it up with Zab in Kostya's absence. Zab must however now sweat down to lightweight.

Undefeated Paul Spadafora Vs Undefeated Zab Judah. for the IBF Lightweight title on the very day that Zab lost to Kostya. 11-03-01

Spadafora KO7
Judah drained almost to death has no fight in him, looks lethargic in a one sided fight. Spadafora lands at will and Judah's corner throws in the towel near the end of round 7.

IMO Frazier wins TKO. Too big and would not let Marciano pressure him.

IMO, Baer close UD

IMO, Hopkins takes a UD. Monzon's style is something that would be no problem for Hopkins imo.

I've watched both Monzon and Hopkins from the first 10 rows in my lifetime. The idea that Hopkins could outperform Monzon is one of the biggest stretches I've seen postulated here. I'd be very comfortable putting an uncomfortable amount of money on Carlos on this one. I simply can't imagine losing that bet.

And I'm also very happy to hear that at least one someone would be willing to accept the bet!

Just Monzon was not the quickest of MW's, which is the only real thing that got rounds won against Hopkins: Work Rate. Not that it meant anything imo

I just feel will be able to tie up Monzon easily, and Hopkins was also tall for a MW, so Monzon won't have the reach advantage he usually did.

It's all opinions though. IMO, Top 3 MW's are Hagler, Hopkins and Monzon. Putting them in order is stupid, and imo, a waste of time. Nobody knows, so nobody should really care.

But since it was a Hypothetical Match up, had to go one way or another :TU:

i'd favour carlos but this is the hypo so its perfectly acceptable to have hopkins KO the great argie in a round. but the spirit of this thread should also press you to give a reason for coming up with such a result. in a moment i'm going to post a very unlikely heavyweight contest with this in mind.

however first things first

barrera gains a big decision over kevin kelley - marco jabs KK's nose off all night kevin takes a knee in the 12th but gets up to see MAB'S arm raised in victory.
