That would have been a wierd remark even if he hadn't immediately previewed three mismatches!

I thought that (perhaps Bennie is right after all). Claude was hyping this up to be a fight for the ages. He was right I suppose, but only for the reason that it saw a future alltime P4P great (and anyone who disputes this is an idiot) give a punch perfect performance.

Eastside Boxing also have the latest boxing news page as well - with all the latest boxing stories that I read daily

the day after the Hatton fight the whole front page was several different headlines all about Ricky Hatton losing the fight

that may not sound strange

but consider this -

none of the headlines said of Manny Pacs victory

none of the picture headlines showed a victorious Manny Pac

none of the storys celebrated manny pacs victory

it was all about the defeated fighter Ricky Hatton

what about the superb winner who put in one of the most impressive performances in a big fight I ever seen

Bennie, on this point I agree with you. It's unneccessary, but we live in a graphic world. We can't hide from the reality.

However, Mullan was morally correct to avoid showing hurt fighters.

Fair point Bennie, but headlines and shock snaps sell in the current era whether you are a tabloid or magazine. Even late editions of the broadsheets had front page snaps of Didier Drogba cussing at the ref

Really? I'm sure Harry must have run some similar shots, sometimes a photo just says it all. I think this cover is one of the better ones ( got to admit, I'm not a big fan of some of those recent BN covers that seem to relish showing up close cuts, in all their bloody glory, blood everywhere, mainly cause if I'm reading it on the tube, I get fellow passengers looking at me like I'm possibly a serial killer, ho ho ) Not that I buy it any longer.
I remember BN used to run a head shot of Crawford Ashley, in the Harry days, when writing about Ashley. And I swear it was a shot of a stunned Ashely sat on the canvas, though you couldn't tell from the cropped photo...apart from his slightly shocked looking expression. Maybe not, as you'd think he'd have probably rung in about that.

Shame old Carl Froch only got a small caption on last week's front page, after his big win, as they went for the PacMan/Hatton pic as main event - tough one that.

bennie, I don't agree at all. It happened. It's a fantastic, dramatic shot of the triumph and dispair which is a huge part of what the sport is all about.

It isn't particularly graphic. A close up shot of Hatton in distress would I agree be tasteless.

It's boxing, a sport well known for its KOs... and boxing fans happen to love KOs.. and given it's a consumer magazine (not a trade magazine) I don't understand your point. The only time I'd agree with your sentiment is if the fighter in questions subsuquently sustained serious injury, but given that at the point they went to press Hatton was already back on the booze and hanging out at the pool I fail to see why they shouldn't use an image that instantly captures the totality of his defeat.

it pissed me off when Froch didn't get his frontpage after Pascal fight...just a tincy picture, same as Khan got...and yet they've been taking the piss royally out of Khan for months showing his big, sparked out image every issue on the tear off subscription slip.

I think it's a great cover shot. It's slightly surreal because Hatton looks perfectly relaxed, like he's having a snooze by the pool or something.

it's considered respectful not to celebrate when your opponent's prone. I noticed Pac man was showing his delight tho. I don't read too much into it mind you, everything I've read suggests he's a decent fella. Plus it was on the big stage I suppose.

I guess its how you view boxing, some see it as a beautifull art others as a brutal confrontation ..
Nowadays the gory brutal aspects sell more, so I guess BN are trying to appeal to this ..

I totally agree about the paper ceasing to be a trade mag anymore .. no longer is it called a paper, even Claude refers to it as a magazine.

sidenote, I find it v-funny when they, every so often slip in the readers letter the `the mag is better than ever etc...` .. as if trying to convince eh?

I don't see anything wrong with it. The extreme drama of a KO ending is one of the edges that boxing has over all other sports. Why hide it? The close ups of Ricky's head being held on the broadcast were much less pleasant to see.

The photo didn't suggest any distress; he wasn't shown on oxygen or being attended by the doctor and if he was still in hospital now it would have been in very bad taste. That photo aptly captured the dizzying highs and terrifying lows of professional prizefighting boxing (did i just paraphrase Homer Simpson?).

it's a great photo - hatton spark out and manny look cool, calm and collected. it captures the whole essence of the fight.
the wide view of same pic also has one of pac man's team on the right jumping for joy (great expression) and a boxing official on the left rushing into the ring looking concerned.

so didnt BN use the famous pic of Ali stood over Liston then?

If Hatton had suffered serious injury from this then don't show it, fair enough, but he didn't. The aim of the sport is to KO your opponent, so why should we, as fans of the sport, be squeamish about showing a KO'd fighter who recovered fully?

On that point - SKY's coverage was disgraceful. The commentators were criticizing Manny for celebrating at the same time as constantly showing close up images of a potentially seriously hurt Hatton as well as showing his distraught missus! How they had the cheek to criticize Manny was unbelievable.

I still believe that you should NEVER show a stricken fighter on the floor, and alway will. Sure, it happened - but a picture is worth a thousand words. The use of the written word is what is really behind this shot.
Nobody in BN can express themselves.
