Bonson def deserves a mention
Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
David Tua. Fought big hitters like Ibeabuchi, Lewis, Maskaev, Rahman, and Izon, and was never hurt or knocked down.
Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
1. oliver mccall - never seen him hurt , rocked , nothing , best chin of all time
2. marvin hagler - only knockdown was a slip , fought everyone in the 80s , only behind mccall cause of that knockdown

VItali Klitschko deserves an honourable mention. Took an absolute humdinger of an uppercut flush from Lewis.

Yeah but after Lennox smashed him with a big right very early in the fight, Tua spent the rest of the evening as far away from Lennox as is possible.
He was plenty hurt in that fight
None of the rest of your list are exactly 1988 Mike Tyson's, either

No, Vitali Klitschko does not deserve an "honourable mention" in a list containing the best 3 chins of all time

fair enough but only sanders has had him looking unorganized and we know the power sanders had. however, vitali hasn't proved his chin as in the top 3 of all time of course.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:He did start to cry in the ring thoboxerbob wrote:1. oliver mccall - never seen him hurt , rocked , nothing , best chin of all time

Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
So? It doesn't matter if they were Mike Tyson, they're big punchers and they never hurt Tua. Lewis never hurt him. Tua wasn't in trouble at any point in that bout and was on solid legs for the entire duration, the reason he was on the outside was because Lewis jabbed the s hit out of him. The fact that he took a big right from Lewis, one of the best right hand punchers of all time and remained steady is a testament to his chin. He took shot after shot from Ibeabuchi all night long and never moved an inch, the guy had some great whiskers.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:crusader wrote:David Tua. What exactly qualifies someone as having a great chin in your opinion? If they have never been notably hurt or knocked down and have faced and taken blow hard punchers it fits my definition.
Which boxers do you think had top notch punch resistance?

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned Muhammad Ali, as he took some almighty shots / faced some really good punchers in his time as well.
Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
David Tua should not be mentioned in this thread, albeit this was vs an ATG amateur

Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
I thought we were talking about their professional careers? I will bet that most of the other guys listed got stopped when they were young guys in the amateurs as well. Tua had not developed into the big strong HW he became. He got hits with loads of hard shots like that in the pros and was never in trouble. What fault do you find in his chin as a pro that prevents him from being mentioned in this thread?chinny wrote:David Tua should not be mentioned in this thread, albeit this was vs an ATG amateur

Well as mentioned above, he got hit by a Lewis right hand and was so confident about his chin that he spent the next 11 rounds on the opposite side of the ring, pulling faces and pretending to throw jabs at an invisible opponent.
You are basing this Tua having a great chin argument on the fact he never went near Lennox Lewis for 11 rounds?

Post-war:-
1) George Chuvalo
2) Oliver McCall
3) Marvin Hagler
It was very hard to choose & I'm still not certain they're correct.

Tua has an awesome chin.
Chris Byrd just ciould not make a dent in him!
Can't recall Lewis hurting him though. Tjought Tua was just outclassed, outreached and out of ideas.

Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
No, I am also basing it on other fights that you are overlooking. He traded toe to toe with Ike Ibeabuchi for twelve rounds and was never hurt. He took hard shots from big punchers Rahman, Maskaev, and Izon for long periods of time and was never hurt. And he was also in with decent hitters like Fres Oquendo and Dannell Nicholson who couldn't make him take a step back, at at no time in his career against any opponent did he ever get unsteady or show any type of obvious tell that a hurt fighter would display.Khaosai-Galaxy wrote:crusader wrote:I thought we were talking about their professional careers? If Lennox was hurting him so much why didn't ever go down or get his knees buckled? Go watch the fight on Youtube. Nice attempt at putting a spin on things, but Tua was walking forward the entire fight and taking punishment. Which rounds was he on the opposite side of the ring and when was he hurt? To me being perfectly steady and walking forward into continuous punishment for 12 rounds from one of the best punchers of the era is not something anyone would be able to do unless they had a granite chin.
Btw I dont think Tua necessarily has the BEST chin in the post war era, I just thought Id through him out because he is a favorite of mine, but his chin is definitely top notch.

Wasnt Tua floored on the bell against Rahman in their rematch. The ref didnt count it tho.
McCall for me has the greatest chin. Bernard Hopkins deserves a mention as well.

Yes he was, on the bell. Hopkins has a very good chin but he was twice floored by Sergundo Mecardo and he was in trouble Vs Antwun Echols. The quiet man 2004 wrote:Wasnt Tua floored on the bell against Rahman in their rematch. The ref didnt count it tho.

Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
Rahman did hurt Tua once in one of their fights. Can't remember in what circumstances or in which fight, though.
Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
Its was more of a balance issue and he was dead tired. The quiet man 2004 wrote:Wasnt Tua floored on the bell against Rahman in their rematch. The ref didnt count it tho.

I think Bhops defense serves as his chin. He is almost impossible to hit cleanly, so its hard to really test it. Mercado had him down twice....
Chuvalo stands out. The guy just got battered by some of the best heavyweights ever and never went away. I recently watched his fight with Foreman and wondered how on earth he managed to even stay conscious, let alone on his feet.

Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
But the Mercado fight was at altitude with little preperation from Hopkins.
What about Lennox Lewis guys? Im not saying he has the best chin but to only go down twice in a career where he fought some awesome punchers, dyou not think his chin is somewhat unfairly criticised.

Re: Top Three Chins in Post War History?
Yes, without a doubt it was underrated, at no time in his career was he hurt by anyone who wasn't considered a big puncher, usually the sign of a legit chin problem. Rahman and McCall both had cannons of right hands and they landed flush. Put almost any other HW in his shoes and the same thing would've happened. Look at the shots he took in the Klitschko fight. Sure he was bit wobbly but he was getting hit time and time again by a guy with a 97 % KO rate. People made it out like he crumpled whenever hit clean. A guy with a glass chin couldn't have survived some of the guys he fought. The quiet man 2004 wrote:But the Mercado fight was at altitude with little preperation from Hopkins.

There is a cracking youtube compilation video that denounces the 'lennox lewis was chinny' myth. The quiet man 2004 wrote:But the Mercado fight was at altitude with little preperation from Hopkins.
