Chad Dawson over rated ?
This guy gets Roy Jones-type praise across the pond, but i find his performances extremely dull.
Admittedly ive only seen the 12 rounds against Johnson (Glen got screwed there) and the tepid, Nytol-sponsored 24 rounds against an old Tarver.
Apart from his height and southpaw stance, i dont really see a 'killer' in the ring. One that could go into the trenches if need be.
From the midpoint in each of the 3 fights he looked like his attention was lacking? with this talk of moving down to 168lb, if he does have inherent stamina issues then he could only make it worse, fighting at a lower weight.
I want to think he's the bee's knees but to date have seen nothing to suggest he is.
Is it just he is dull? or are the 3 fights bad examples..

Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
I don't think he's overrated cos his skills are unreal I just feel he needs the right type of opponent!! It's very rare you get very exciting southpaws anyway..
I feel the Cloud match could put him on the map..In the US at least..

Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
He seems like another Jermain Taylor to me. I don't think his stamina will stand up to constant pressure, but while he has his own way he looks good.

From what some people are saying, Cloud would give him a nap rather than put him on the map. I haven't seen Cloud yet though.Bomber 1 wrote:I don't think he's overrated cos his skills are unreal I just feel he needs the right type of opponent!! He's on youtube.
Hungry looking fighter with power, a bit rough round the edges and not nearly as polished - but looks like a guy who comes to fight.

Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
Cloud would pull down Dawson's pants and make him scream "Tavouris, Tavouris, you is da man!"
175 is shit at the moment. Dawson is merely the best of a bad bunch.
Cloud and Shumenov are the only two that excite me.

Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
He has good skills and fast hands Froch would cause him problems because he would just keep coming and throwing but id still fancy Dawson not sure about Hopkins though fast hands give him problems
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
Dawson is very good but he's chasing dull old men. Can't fault his record, with wins over Harding, Adamek, Johnson, and Tarver twice. Just needs something to spice things up.
He never had anything to gain in the Tarver rematch, and Johnson got most of the credit in their fight. Chad comes across badly because he never gave Johnson a rematch. I mean, you get a good fight like Dawson-Johnson, ppl are split on who deserved the win, and no sign of a rematch? Disgraceful.
I hope the ppl that put these fights together realise that Tavoris Cloud is the guy to get ppl interested in Dawson. But ppl would be more interested if Cloud stayed busy looking lethal, rather than going inactive or sitting on his mandatory or whatever he is up to.
Cloud could be the perfect foil to Dawson, who might be able to show of fhis skills Calzaghe-Lacy style. Cloud may be potentially better than Lacy but he hasn't been moved the way Lacy was moved, to the point that many felt Lacy was an absolute killer, getting better all the time.

I was thinking the same thing Asterix, a few days ago. There is'nt anyone in that division who can give him any real pressure, to see how good he really is. Still looks quite raw to me and i don't think he will amount to very much, with regards to being seen in the same light as a Jones, Toney, Hopkins etc etcAsterix wrote:He seems like another Jermain Taylor to me. Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
Its a shame there are no huge fighters at 175 for him with Hopkins not wanting any part. Dawson would win an emphatic UD over Hopkins, too much speed, youth and slickness for the old man.
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
The fact that Johnson can outpoint him (on my card) shows how good this fighter really is. No disrespect to Johnson, but Chad should've easily outpointed him. Perhaps it was a learning curve.Quixall wrote:I was thinking the same thing Asterix, a few days ago. I also think Hopkins would beat him in a close fight right now. Maybe in 18 months time it would be a different story.
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
well, he beat Tomasz Adamek, albeit an Adamek that was drained and with the wrong trainer. Whereas Taylor always lost to the big sluggers, Pavlik and Froch.Quixall wrote:I was thinking the same thing Asterix, a few days ago. I think perhaps Dawson is an excellent fighter who will never look spectacular. I had him beating Johnson. Johnson perhaps had 5 really good rounds but Dawson seemed to have 7 good/decent ones. Reckon he should have rematched Johnson as he could have improved and would come across as a better fighter.
But still, at least he faced Johnson once, unlike someone, who pulled out twice allowing Johnson tog on a Fighter of the Year run.
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
I think Dawson has the potential to get into the P4P top five. I have seen that fight Vs Johnson, Gomez, and I must say, I had Dawson winning that 115/113 - it was close but clear in my opinion. I have only seen the Johnson and Tarver I fights though.
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
Didn't Dawson pull out of a rematch with Tarver among others? I guess injuries happen and it is not just a case of boxers "backing out"Autobarn wrote:well, he beat Tomasz Adamek, albeit an Adamek that was drained and with the wrong trainer. Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
I said this once and i'll say it again.
Dawson vs Tarver 2 was the most boring Fight of the year and its such a shame that HBO decided to show this crappy borefest on the back of Pacman-Hatton reply
All the good that the Pacman fight did to attract New Fans, the Dawson Fight would have made them run away screaming! 12 dull rounds that all looked the same, no tension, excitement or any moment of a 'wow' or 'cool' factor.....12 Forgettable Rds that made me Fall asleep!
Dawson has Skills but i aint interested in seeing his 'Sparring session' like Fights again unless its a Fight with Tavoris Cloud who i hope Knocks him the Fcuk out as we Need a Champion at Light Heavyweight like Cloud, not Dawson to get the Fans interested.
Also Dawson lacks absolutely NO CHARISMA during interviews, he Talks like he Fights, DULL DULL DULL ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzz..........

Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
so dawson's charismatic?
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
Dawson is the real deal and wins over Adamek, Johnson (not a robbery) and Tarver twice prove that. Anybody who thinks differently is just plain f**king stupid. The man has some unreal skills for a guy his size. The Johnson fight also showed he can hang tough. The best fighter in the world at 175 down. He'd probably be the best cruiserweight in the world as well.

Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
It has to be said that all of Tarver's losses have come by a decision and not a stoppage or a knock out, so in that respect, Dawson winning by a decision comes as no suprise. Dawson looks impressive, but tends to fade in fights, aka Taylor and looks quite raw at times, but the divsion looks pretty weak at the minute, so Dawson should reign supreme for a while, without being really tested. The Hopkins fight would have to take place within the next year, because i believe that Hopkins is looking at maybe two more fights and let's be real here, after the age of 44, even Hopkins won't be that affective anymore, so a fight with Dawson would probably happen in the autumn, if it's to happen at all. I think that Hopkins would school Dawson, once he weathered the opening four or five rounds and once again, i can see Dawson fading and Hopkins taking control in the latter half of the fight and winning on a decision. It's also a fight that Dawson would'nt gain much from, because if he losses, it's "I knew he was'nt all that...." and if he wins, it's the "Hopkins is an od man....." routine. It's a pity, but Dawson has come along at the wrong time, when the likes of Hopkins and Jones are on their way out and Calzaghe has retired. All the action is happening in the lower divisions and everything above 147lbs to 154lbs seems pretty dull at the minute.Emerson Poncey Name Ghent wrote:The fact that Johnson can outpoint him (on my card) shows how good this fighter really is. Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
I think he is similar to Taylor in that he fades and his work rate and overall effectiveness decrease in the latter half of the fight, as was the case with the Johnson fight. I think he is good enough to reign supreme at that weight for some time, mainly, because the division is pretty weak and will remain so untill a fighter like Kessler moves up from super-middleweight or has an injection of new blood.Autobarn wrote:well, he beat Tomasz Adamek, albeit an Adamek that was drained and with the wrong trainer. Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
He looks dull winning but he is very good defensively, he does not get hit much over the 12 rounds and keeps his hands up well and picks off shots on his gloves. he's always going to be a boring distance fighter but will be hard to beat all the same.
Re: Chad Dawson over rated ?
Dawson is being hyped by HBO because they have no other young American fighters. The one with star potential, Pavlik was exposed by Hopkins.
They muse be terribly dissapointed that Andre Ward, despite the hype, hasn;t proven himself yet. Despite tuning pro 5 years ago.
My guess is HBO are hoping Dawson and Pavlik can get some wins under their belts, establish or re-establish some name recognition and stage a PPV, likely hoping for a rivalry. Dawson has no one at 175, Hopkins his only payday, assuming Calzaghe keep his word.

He hasn't boxed in nearly a year and his best win was over Gonzalez. Never been on a big show haven't heard of any big promoters going after him and they haven't even bothered putting him on Dawson undercards to create soms interest. Strikes me as one of those guys that gets bigged up on here because no one's ever seen him or heard of him.
