dr_devious wrote:Marvin Hagler was the hardest man of the recent era imo. He had a 15 year career, with 10-12 years at the top level and only ever took a count once, which was a disputed knockdown against Juan Roldan. He faced the most murderous punchers of the 70s and 80s like Cyclone Hart, Bennie Briscoe, Tommy Hearns and John Mugabi. Marvin proved himself to be indestructable, so he gets my vote.
All very credible, but some one who sings into the ring facing the two biggest punching heavyweights of the modern area, when widely considered past it, gets mine.

Holyfield was and is nuts.

Holyfield was a hard man. Beat Tyson in the staredown.

But it has to be an old-timer, Dempsey was a tough fella.

i'm with carbo - that comment about griffith was pathetic. i'm surprised bennie thought it was so funny as his posts are usually intelligent.

All other names mentioned above (though I can't verify for Joe Grim) were stopped or dropped at least once during their career, no one has come close to doing either to McCall (apart from second Lewis fight when he simply gave up) even in this 'fight' no defense at all in last round allowing free shots and he still didn't go down!
I'm not arguing with the above evidence but surely bursting into tears tarnishes the hard man image a little.

Yes, absolutely hilarious to mock a true warrior of the ring because of his sexuality with the kind of joke a seven year old would view as base and childish.

Why don't you go the whole hog and start mocking blacks, hispanics and jews, too?

Come on. Grow up, eh?

Good point, though did Oliver ever have a 'hard man image?
I think his image was more 'crazy coke head' then hard man as such.

Didn't he once get done for attacking coppers with a christmas tree whilst off his head??..

I would imagine he could be a bit of a handful/menace when out of his tree and in the mood

Look, I respect Emile Griffith an AWFUL lot for coming out in a macho sport - it is virtually unknown for any pro sportsman to come out, let alone in boxing.

But all I'm saying is that the joke, whilst being childish, is fairly tongue in cheek, and is not spiteful. There is no need for your over-the-top holier than though thought-fascism.

The gays I know would chuckle, they would just find it a bit silly.

I love the way people such as yourself get 'offended' at everything on behalf of other groups who probably wouldn't give a sh1t anyway.

You know, Emile Griffith contested 339 world title rounds in his career which puts him above the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson (288), Muhammad Ali (270) and Larry Holmes (254).
His last fight was against our own Alan Minter.

Thanks. It might make him No. 1 but I cannot be bothered to check Sven Ottke or Bernard Hopkins.
