.... i dont have to jock peterkin....at all. im just calling it the way it was seen. to avoid any back and forth with ANYONE, i will leave it at that. we know arias beat some great fighters....but i wont go there.DCAmateurBoxing wrote:Ok, we understand, but posting under a new name with the same thing isn't going to change anything.skept wrote:the tournaments over here is my observation: arias vs terbunga was a good fight, which terbunga won. but lets be honest and lets be fair. arias lost to travis peterkin that 1st day, plain and simple. travis beat arias the whole fight and for the ref to involve himself and save arias just show you why we never medal the way we should in the olympics. favortism. yes peterkin did drop arias twice. one was a vicious body shot. peterkin beat #5 ranked lamar russ to make the nationals and beat up #1 ranked luis arias in the nationals, only to have it taken by a ref who took it away. travis peterkin been around a while, and i feel he is a top 165 fighter who poses a threat to anyone in his weight class. i like arias but peterkin tore him up, plain and simplePeterkins did very well for himself and he is going to Denver for USA's Championships which is for $$$, so he has a chance to see Arias again. I hope he does well too.

How was the jose Benavidez vs Jamal James fight.
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
you have people speaking up for other boxers but as soon as travis peterkin name come up with someone saying good things about him is there a problem? should i let him fall thru the cracks like everyone else tried? if the kid won, he won and if he lost, which he did, get the other guy next time. relax ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
I don't have anything against Peterkin at all. I'm very familiar with him and his gym, but I think that you are putting a lot of pressure on a boxer that is up and coming who has yet to win a major tournament. He has done very well recently, but don't you think there is enough pressure without you putting his name out there as the guy who is going to beat current national champions? At least wait until Denver. As far as a bad decision, that happens too.skept wrote:you have people speaking up for other boxers but as soon as travis peterkin name come up with someone saying good things about him is there a problem? should i let him fall thru the cracks like everyone else tried? if the kid won, he won and if he lost, which he did, get the other guy next time. relax

how will eddie Alicea do this time for the U.S.A's in the 152's?

One mistake. Lenroy "Cameron" Thompson won a decision over Bryant Jennings. Jennings did very well, but he didn't win the NGG this year.Sportssummary wrote:Here are official results from Salt Lake City. All wins tonight were by decision. Champions are:

Golden Boy Award - Louis Byrd, Colorado-New Mexico
Bill Daniels Award - Jesus Magdaleno, Nevada
TEAM AWARDS
FIRST PLACE - NEVADA
SECOND PLACE - COLORADO-NEW MEXICO
THIRD PLACE - TEXAS
I'm not sure where Michigan finished, but I know that it was in the top 10 for sure. Two 3-2 losses in the semi-finals cost us at least 2 points. Jose Bernal losing a close bout (in spite of the 5-0 decision) to Errol Spence in the preliminaries which cost us at least a few points. This along with a few one and dones really cost the team. I had hoped to finish in the top 3.

Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
This year's champs show what is sort of typical. The heavier weight classes usually are won by boxers who are a little more mature physically. That means they are usually a little older. This year all the champs from 106 to 152 were teenagers. The four heaviest weight classes 165 to 201+ were won by boxers who are 20 or older. It seems funny that my son is one of the old guys in this group of boxers. I don't think of 20 as old for amateur boxers. If we could keep some of these young stars amateur until 2012 we could have a much better chance at winning some medals in London. Too many of these kids turn pro too young.
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
It was a very good tournament and there were some excellent bouts. I appreciate all the positive comments about my son Jordan. I was very proud of him for toughing it out all week in spite of having a bad chest cold. He was coughing up stuff all week and it really hindered his breathing. I was amazed that he still was stronger and less tired than his opponents in the third round of every one of his bouts.
Jordan also won a NOGGOA scholarship which he really appreciates as it will help him with his college expenses.

Congratulations Dennis, I guess we'll c you in Denver..
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
I wanted to comment about all of my sons opponents in Salt Lake City. Each and everyone of them was a very good sport. Ben, Donovan, Danny, Javonta and Lamar. Way to go guys. 5 excellent opponents. My son had to earn each victory. Nobody gave it to him. They all pushed him and made him dig down to pull out the wins. Of course I know Danny Calhoun the best as I have talked to him many times over the last couple of years. Once again Danny was a class act. Ben Ferrin and Javonta Charles were new to us, but they too represented themselves very well. Good sportsmanship and nice guys. I talked to both of them and they were a pleasure to be around. My dad, Jordan and I had breakfast with Ben and got to know him a little bit better. I didn't really get to talk to Donovan Dennis or Lamar Fenner, but they were very respectful to everyone and good sports. I heard very good comments from other coaches and officials about them being very gracious in defeat. That is what this sport is all about. Competition and good sportsmanship.
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
I am very proud of Eddie Alciea beating Leandre White after loseing to him 4x in a row. I hope to see them fight again at regionals. who ever win between these to should win U.S championships. Both looked sharped in GG nationals.
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
if they would rank these fighters now? what would the 152 wt class look like?
Re: 2009 National Golden Gloves Results/Reports
Congratulations Dennis and Jordan. We need more coaches like you in the sport Dennis. Keep up the good work.

How was the Naim Terbunja-Luis Arias bout??? I was impressed with Arias at the World Youths last year, clearly the best american boxer (won a bronze medal). Terbunja is a very experienced olympian who also has a world youth medal (bronze in Santiago de Cuba 2002).

I know Joey won gold...it was a great achievement. Not to offend anyone but it was hardly Tyson-Holyfield material in the super heavies...I was impressed with Arias and thought he had a bright future. Don't think he got robbed though.
Adam Lopez was also a very good boxer from the USA team but he lost to arguably the best boxer of the tournament in Jonathan Gonzalez from Puerto Rico.

No matter what... he beat the top guys in the world and I think he might be the only Super Heavy to win gold at that tourney for us..
Cuba is my boy too..but its hard to knock Joey when he won the gold..even if Cuba got robbed

Very happy for you and Jordan, Dennis. You brother must be very proud as well. I'd hoped it would have been us up there with you but it didn't work out that way. I did tell you that you were definitely going to win it through.

According to the NY Daily News:region 8 wrote:What happen to raul lopez.
Raul Lopez, a two-time Gloves champ who is ranked sixth nationally at 112 pounds and is thought to be a candidate for the 2012 Olympics, did not make the trip to Utah because he was suspended by USA Boxing for six months for undisclosed disciplinary reasons stemming from an incident that took place in February during a USA Boxing-sponsored training camp in Colorado Springs, Colo., according to Lopez's father, Marcos Suarez. Lopez is now looking to turn pro as soon as possible.
Also, another New Yorker, Shemuel Pagan is looking to turn pro over the summer.
