sorry john, for jumping in but I just had to say that Emmanuel Augustus (Burton) has one of the most deceiving records ever. I believe he has about 30 losses but he's fought a ridiculously talented list of opponents and lost many close and questionable decisions. Floyd Mayweather Jr said he gave him the hardest fight of his career.

DC, good point but he meant amateur...on that end I do think that there are amateurs with numerous losses but it is all relative...a national level amateur will box against tougher comp on a much more frequent basis...in one 6 month span for example I fought the # 1 and #2 in the world (Otis Grant and Darin Allen) as well as national champs, runner ups, etc etc (Terry Christianson, Lamar Parks, Keith Providence, etc)... so if a guy has around 200 bouts with 35 losses tha really isnt that unusual...it may not SOUNDS impressive but considering the asctivity level, it is...

Reading might be good, huh?
That's a great question. I know that it is completely possible for a great amateur boxer to not have any national titles, depending on where and when he comes up. I know that here in DC and in So. Cal ( I just can't speak on other areas), getting out of the area is the hardest thing to do. I think there are a lot of boxers that get left at the local and regional level every year because of the talent (sometimes an individual) that they may not be able to get past. Do you agree, John?

O yea definitely. I remember back in the late 1980's you had Fabian Williams, Darin Allen and Joe Lipsey all at 165 in Region 5. That's three national/world rated middleweights right in the same weight, same region. Only one makes it out. ST Louis at one point had I think three guys in the top 10 at 139.

I remember Ricardo Williams, Ray Sanchez (Danny Romero came all the way out to see him), Tiger and Rock Allen at the silver gloves in the 1990's when I used to as a coach for my kids here in Hartford...

Come on Iceman, there are so many more that you saw out there. You took Chad to he Silver Gloves one year when I couldn't go. I bet if you think about it you could list 20 known boxers you saw at the Silver Gloves alone.

Yesa, or sure...Bad Chad won one and then dropped a decision to a good kid in Chad Aquino...I saw a lot of good fighters when they were kids...I'd have to think of them for a minute...Roberto Benitez, Jose Aguiniga, etc etc...I actually have a bunch of the bout sheets from those nationals....I will bust them out soon

Chad went to the Silver Gloves Nationals twice. He beat Dimity Salita in the regionals both times. The year in between he lost in the regionals to Eric Fagan. No he didn't win, runner up in his last year. Iceman, Chad Dawson beat Chad Aquino in the Silver Gloves. He Lost to Chad Aquino the year before in the PALS in St Louis.

Riccardo Williams ( are you speaking of "Slick Rick"? ), was a good friend of Duke Tanner ( 18-0 pro record ), both got prison time for drugs. Slick Rick use to come to Gary and visit Tanner, both had talent.

John,

Speaking of Ricardo Williams, do you remember Larry Gonzales from Colorado? He and Williams fought a few times when they were 'grooming' him for the Olympics. I helped him as a pro and have his amateur USA Boxing Passbook. It's a little who's who, kinda cool.

Also, what's with Remillard jumping ship? I met you guys when we brought Manny Perez out for the youth title fight early last year.

Take care,

Chris

Very talented fighter, I hope they keep his head on straight, when he's a world champ it will make he and Perez' WBC World Youth Title Fight of the Year that much more significant.

Thanks buddy appreciate the response.
