John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Continuing our tour through the Lewis Carroll Boxing Training camp, I encourage you all to once again step "through the looking glass" with your tour guide.
How many of our new freshly minted BoxRec top notch analysts will predict a "Hug-a-thon" that will favor an eventual wearing down of the Bear and UD or even KO victory for the esteemed "Quiet Man"?
Shh.....it's happening now, if we are quiet and don't disturb them, we just may be able to listen in and learn what our panel of top shelf experts have to say about this brilliant match up!
Rumor has it that the survivor of this donnybrook goes on to face the winner of the Primo Carnera, Joe Frazier matchup which is sure to be another close one!

Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Liston never fought anyone remotely durable as Ruiz. Watch the Tua fight to convince yourself. RJJ and Toney are so lucky to have faced a past-prime Ruiz. Prime for prime, Ruiz UD 15 if Liston doesn't quit on his stool before that.
Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Ruiz win by arm bar.

Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Liston was scared of crazy people and they don't get more crazy then a Prime Ruiz. I'd favor Ruiz under 6. If a 210 lb crazy Ali could do it no doubt a prime 225 lb crazy Ruiz would do it better.

Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Not sure who's being serious but if this is a knock on Ruiz, I'd take some time and think about it.
He beat guys like Tony Tucker, Kirk Johnson and Andrew Golata, no slouches and all bigger than Sonny. He beat the guy who KO'd Lewis namely Hasim Rahman and Lewis sure wasn't signing on the line to face John. Maybe Lennox knew something, (since most of you here seem to think Lennox was one of the smartest HW"s ever.) That smart champion avoided John like the plague. He beat Holyfield and had no problem with sluggers, like James Thunder.
Don't count him out.

Well this looking glass tour is obviously on terra firma here.
As for counting John Ruiz out...I wouldn't think of it. That honor would go to the ref.
Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
We joke about Ruiz, but I agree. Ruiz style, although not exciting is very effective against the big boys (and I assume, legal).Tuff Customer wrote:Not sure who's being serious but if this is a knock on Ruiz, I'd take some time and think about it.

Ruiz has one of the best chins out there, he was nearly decapitated by Tua for a super quick KO loss, but has not lost inside the distance since.

- I say he gets the DQ on Sonny by crawling about on the canvas in Mr. Popkins' style crying about low blows.pringle wrote:Ruiz win by arm bar.

Ruiz by 1st round KO.
Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
I'll go with Sonny in this one.
Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Ruiz is not the most entertaining guy out there.
But he must be doing something right.
I think Liston gets the better of Ruiz, in an ugly
and suprisingly close fight.
But I guess Ruiz is just plain shit and would lose to
Joe Grimm.

Ruiz vs Valuev (1 & 2) were plain poop.
The best action was after the first fight when that little german trainer punched that weirdo who managed Ruiz.

How gay is this US auto editing system on this site that
has us saying 'poop' instead of 'shi...t'.
I can not think of to many Ruiz fights where I thought
he came close to entertaining me. But, he would still
be a hard man to beat.

Most likely a kiwi that resides here.
Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
I find it interesting that so many dislike Ruiz. Of all the more
recent fighters at HW< he in my opinion is the most like the
old style fighters. The more throw back in style and the likes
compared to his opponents and contemporaries.
He is not the biggest man about, he is for the most part
always in good shape. He trains honest. He likes to work the
clinch, from it and into it. He rarely looks for combinations or
the ever elusive high punch stat. His style is not the most exciting,
yet he is still able to win for the most part.
I have never been a Ruiz fan, and I personally struggle to watch
his fights....that does not mean I do not aknowledge his abilities
and talents.

Not surprised Robbie is actually predicting a close fight.Robinson wrote:How gay is this US auto editing system on this site that

Ruiz was crap. Roy and Toney, two guys who actually knew how to box, beat him easy. Chagaev also decisively outpointed despite people who look at the SD and claim Ruiz was robbed.
Ruiz's ascension was a mix of him having the right promoter and coming up in an era of crap heavyweights. Valuev,Rahman, Oquendo,Johnson etc. all had a terrible time vs Ruiz b/c they were crap too and let themselves get clinched every second by a natural cruiserweight b/c they were lazy fighters. Ruiz is a durable guy who came to fight but he has no special abilities . . he simply exposed other guys who b/c of greater natural talent were overhyped to begin with. He is the poster child of how bad the HW division has become, as he's essentially been a top 10 fighter for the past decade.
Re: John Ruiz Vs Sonny Liston
Three Kiwis and three Aussies are travelling by train to a rugby game. At the station, the three Aussies each buy a ticket and watch with bewilderment as the three Kiwis buy only a single ticket between them.Robinson wrote:Most likely a kiwi that resides here.
"How are three people going to travel on only one ticket?" asks an Aussie.
"Watch and you’ll see", answers the Kiwi.
They all board the train. The Aussies take their respective seats but all three Kiwis cram into a bathroom and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train has departed, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the bathroom door and says, "Ticket please!” The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand. The conductor takes it and moves on.
The Aussies see this and agree it was quite a clever plan. So after the game, the Aussies decide to copy the Kiwis on the return trip and save some money (being clever with money and all that).
When they get to the station, they buy a single ticket for their return trip. To their astonishment, the Kiwis don’t buy a ticket at all. "How are you going to travel without a ticket?" asks one perplexed Aussie. "Watch and you’ll see", answers a Kiwi. When they board the train, the three Aussies cram into a bathroom and the Kiwis cram into another nearby. The train departs. Shortly afterwards, one of the Kiwis leaves and walks over to the bathroom where the Aussies are hiding.
He knocks on the door and says, "Tickets please!"
