I have got to say that Gavin is the worst by far of the olympians that has turned over. He will NEVER make it beyound domestic class unless he goes with a more experienced trainer.boxerbob wrote:is there any footage of thier fights on saturday night???

Interesting you say that because most people/papers say he he is the best prospect out of the olympians. I havent seen any of his 2 pro fights so i cant say at this stage but saunders looks impressive!

Re: frankie gavin and billy joe saunders
I thought Saunders got the job done well on Saturday, looked nice when going to the body, good movement in and out of range.
Gavin got the job done against an opponent that could of made him look very bad, the guy was a runner with long arms. But Frankie cut the ring off ok, and broke him down. I hope they don't take away from his boxing skill and try and make Frankie a puncher, because he isn't one.
Its way to early for us to say he's going to struggle, lets see him in with someone who has ambition, that will tell us more

there on youtube type there name in with the name of there opponants of the date 15-5-09
i hae to agree with teddy gavin doesnt look like he's going to develop into a dominating fighter like hes touted to be
billy joe is the best of the olympians to turn pro and got the best chance to be world champ because of his high energy southpaw volume punching style coupled with his fast reflexs and good lateral head movement

Thats why he needs to drop Arnie Farnell and go to someone more experienced as he is the one that will need the most work to make it.Old bones Ian wrote:I thought Saunders got the job done well on Saturday, looked nice when going to the body, good movement in and out of range.

i know there will be plenty on here who have seen gavin and the rest fight umpteen fights in the ams, and thus be able to offer a more in depth opinion than myself, but talking as someone who has only seen these guys first 2 pro fights, frankies lack of power is very apparent. i cant see him holding off too many forcefull characters with the punches he was throwing friday night.

Give Frankie time..He ain't an attacking style fighter he's a skillful counter puncher with proper quick hands and lightening fast feet!!
Give him time and opponents that don't just wanna cover up and you'll see the best of him without any doubt..Bring someone with ambition and I promise you'll see the best of Frankie Gavin and also a future world champion!! I've trained with him for many years now and believe me you ask 1 boxer who's worked with him what they think of him and I guarentee they'll tell you the same thing Im telling you!!
You don't become WORLD CHAMPION without being able to fight!! It's as simple as that!!!
As for Billy Joe he's a fantastic talent and for his age it's frightening to think just how good he is!! Boxing in this country definitly has some good times coming that's for sure!!

Bomber every fighter you talk about has in your opinion amazing potential. Gavin has looked average, he is going to need way more work than the other prospect/olympians. You are made for the pro's good skill and good power, some arnt and Gavin I and many other feel is not cutout to be a top pro.Bomber 1 wrote:Give Frankie time..He ain't an attacking style fighter he's a skillful counter puncher with proper quick hands and lightening fast feet!!

Re: frankie gavin and billy joe saunders
I'd get someone like Colin McMillan in to give Frankie a few ideas about boxing with skill.
Got to give Arnie a fair crack at the whip, he's got a good stable going with his boxers, and he knows that Frankie isn;t a big puncher.

i can see the skills your praising him for mate, no doubt. the sharp accuracy of his punches standing out for me. i can also appreciate that seek and destroy aint the boys game, and the onus on going out and making a statement is there in these early fights. my thinking is that when someone comes with ambition coupled with a bit of skill and power, frankie is going to have to work very hard constantly outboxing opponents over the distance. thats obviously his game, but if the other guy has nothing to fear from the shots coming back, its gonna be hard to keep em ofBomber 1 wrote:Give Frankie time..He ain't an attacking style fighter he's a skillful counter puncher with proper quick hands and lightening fast feet!!

Re: frankie gavin and billy joe saunders
I agree with most of what you are saying and I mean all of you there BUT trust me he's attacking fighters at the min and that ain't his game!!
You'll see the best of him when someone attacks and pressures him!! believe me I train with him daily and he's thr hardest thing I've ever seen to hit.. All I ask is that you give him time and let his natural style come through!!
I only say nice things about fighters too Teddy cos I personally don't see the point in slagging them!! Im not saying you do but I just think if I ain't got nothing nice to say then I just don't say much at all..

Billy Joe Saunders is the most suited to the pro's out of the Olympians his body work is good and he has good power Gavin looked Amauturish but cut off the ring well but just didnt look to impressive he may struggle to make it big in the pros his style is suited to the Ams

Re: frankie gavin and billy joe saunders
Billy Joe was always going to have an easy transition to the pros because he had a pro style in the ams.
It is little wonder then that he looks dynamite in his early pro fights (pre Olympics he was my pick as the best signature to get for the pro promoters).
Frankie on the other hand had completely mastered the style needed to succeed as an amateur. Posters who are righting him off dont realise what talent he has. As Bomber has said wait til he fights someone with ambition who is actually trying to land shots on him. Then Frankie will come into his own - he is a counter punching wizard!

Re: frankie gavin and billy joe saunders
I agree that Frankie's all-out attack has been more about pleasing the fans and living up to the media pressure, than staying true to what made him successful.
I also agree that his punches did not seem to carry much leverage at this weight.
However,
Junior Witter had just 3 stoppages from 17 fights when he started out and then lost on points to Zab Judah.
He then came back with a 15 win knockout run !
You can learn to punch harder - and we all know he can box when presented with an opportunity to do so.

Re: frankie gavin and billy joe saunders
now after watching frankie gavin 2nd fight , i thought he did excellent....why??
he showed the way to beat a taller guy who was moving away lot - pressure , body shots , quick combinations
gavin in his 2nd fight looked good
