Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
1. It's his COMEBACK fight after 1.5 years off.
2. Many people had JMM actually BEATING Pacquaio twice (I had). Arguably JMM is the best pound for pound.
3. JMM is a master technician, an absolute MASTER and has been hitting much harder in recent fights.
4. Most fighters have a tune up when they make a comeback. Floyd is jumping in with JMM with no tune up.
What do people expect? A fight with Cotto or Mosley as his first fight back. JMM is coming up to 143, but he was moving up anyway. Floyd will have to move down in weight and we know the effect that can have on a fighter.
Floyd should be commended for taking such a tough fight on his first fight back in my opinion.

I ddint realise that he was getting heat for the fight. (then again I dont read a lot of boxing web pages anymore).
I think it is a testing fight although neither particularly likes to lead off so I dont expect a hugely memorable fight; more a tactile battle.

I think JMM will be way too slow and Mayweather will nail Pacquaio with repeated right hand pot shots at will. Both fights will resemble Floyd vs Gatti.J wrote:i havwe no problem with the fight and am tipping marquez in a close sd.

Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Maybe its because recently the little guy beating the bigger guy has been following the lines of small guy at their peak/big guy past his peak ..... this time, whilst marquez is really showing good form - he is seen as the guy past his best, whilst the bigger guy mayweather is seen as at his peak .. I don`t think anybody really took Mayweathers retirement seriously, more a case of waiting for the best oppurtunity .. but the lay-off makes this fight a little more interesting.
Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Marquez (134¼ last weigh in) is smaller than Mayweather (147 last weigh in), not only in terms of weight, but also in terms of reach. Mayweather is regarded as the best boxer in the World, so you'd expect him to fight guys his own size or bigger.
I don't like this fight because I can see Mayweather hitting Marquez way too much. This could look like a mismatch. At 135 lbs Marquez is the best, but at 143 lbs I fear it's a step (or 2 steps) too far.
I just hope it's a competitive fight, because if it's not then it's bad for boxing.

Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Mainly the weight thing, although they started 1division apart, Marquez is only around 4-5lbs lighter on fight night, Mayweathers going down to 144 and Marquez is LW King to boot and many had him beating Pacquaio twice.
Stylistically JMM doesn't stand much chance though, hes a bit straight up, defensively open to left hands, much slower and smaller. Mayweather should have his way with him but hes not to be slept on

Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
I dont think people are giving him stick.
I think this is a good fight. I think that Marquez has a chance of pulling off the upset, and I think that the decision could be contraversial. ~Mayweather isn't really a big welterweight, he's a big lightweight, but its his speed that kills.
Marquez has great handspeed, can fight in the pocket, and is incredibly tough. He's taken the best that Pacman can dish out and has always come back for more, and how many other fighters have been able to do that?

Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Floyd can make 140. Welterweight has always been a breeze for him. Against DLH has was munching on his favourite, Popeye's chicken, during the build up and still came in at 150. That's the only reason why I'm unhappy with him.
In fact he was 146 when he was training at Pat Burn's gym in Florida late last year before the Dawson fight.

Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
I think it's a fight that's up in the air right now, because nobody knows how Marquez will carry the weight. It's a decent fight on paper, but there is a big size difference there.
Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
A big lightweight, James? Give it a break. He's a big lightweight in the same way that Jose Luis Castillo is a big lightweight. He might have a been a big lightweight once upon a time, but these days he's completely unable to make 135.jamesmcdonnell wrote:I dont think people are giving him stick.

Maybe, just maybe, you could say he's a big junior welterweight, but since Hatton is seen as a big junior welter and Mayweater appeared bigger than him when they fought, I think even that's stretching it. Mayweather's just not one of the new breed of monster welters like Cintron, Margarito and Williams -- but a welterweight he is.
Either he's a full blown welter as evidenced by the hardball over a pound here or there at 143-144 for Marquez, in which case that argument is moot, or he's trying to get every advantage against the smaller man, in which case I think that says more about the weight of his balls than the rest of him...

most of em moaning about the size and the fact they want him to fight mosley or cotto at welter.
i'm taking the fight for what it is.

My mate Eli was training at the gym at the time and shat himself with glee. Floyd was a guest of Dawson's at the fight too (if you have quick eyes, you can see him for bout a second when they show a shot of the balcony). He's been in training since October or November last year. Not sure which.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Dawson-Tarver? Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Marquez is very easy to hit, just look at the Juan Diaz fight.
If Juan Diaz had a better game plan and didn't try to knock Marquez out he would have been able to keep his energy up through the fight.
Mayweather will have the conditioning, speed, power and ring craft to embarrass Marquez
Marquez should never be considered an easy fight, but for Mayweather I think it is!

Because he's Floyd Mayweather. Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
If he fought King Kong, people would say he was ducking Godzilla.
Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Yeah, but then you can look at it from another angle and say Diaz put Marquez under a lot of pressure and didn't give him time to think. Mayweather won't do that, it's gonna be more of a chess match.philmarton wrote:Marquez is very easy to hit, just look at the Juan Diaz fight.

I still think this is Mayweather's fight to lose though. He's got almost all the advantages in his favour, so if he doesn't get his arm raised it will be a bad loss for him. Marquez is a brilliant fighter, but I don't think he's a brilliant welterweight. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, who know's?

Yeah, this is my thinking, Mayweather isn't exactly known for his prolific workrate these days. Diaz threw a hell of a lot of leather, Mayweather will be picking his spots.ArtOfWar wrote:Yeah, but then you can look at it from another angle and say Diaz put Marquez under a lot of pressure and didn't give him time to think. Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
Yep. Mayweather didn't throw any combinations against either Hatton or DLH. People forget how close the DLH fight actually was, because of Floyd's low punch output.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Yeah, this is my thinking, Mayweather isn't exactly known for his prolific workrate these days. Come now, Godzilla's shot. When was the last time he faced top-flight opposition? Mothra? Ghidra? Typical Floyd public relations stunt. At this stage I think even Baldomir would have the beating of the big green fire-breathing lizard.
MechaGodzilla, on the other hand, is the future of the division.
Re: Why is Mayweather getting stick for fighting JMM?
The fight should be at 140lbs. Mayweather can make that, piss easy. That would be fair, Marquez moves up a division, Mayweather moves down. I am just thankful this fight isn't at welterweight. The other reason I am not so cynical about this fight is that I believe it's going to be a 'warm-up' for a Pacquiao fight. If Mayweather does beta Marquez but fails to fight Pacquiao, then this Marquez fight is pointless.
