Criticize on Lennox Lewis
Criticize on Lennox Lewis
There is the reason why I criticize on former Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis:
1. He ducks some fighters.
2. He calls Mike Tyson a chicken after he beats him who Tyson was not at his best which gives unfair credit to Tyson.
3. He beats Vitali Klistchko in his last fight and retires saying he have nothing left rather than fighting the rematch with Vitali.
4. He thinks he beat the best fighter in the world, but most of the fighters are past their best.
5. He didn't beat any real good fighters, because riddick ducks him, and the rest of them are past their best.
6. He beats some good fighters who were good enough.
I think Lennox Lewis is the cowardly lion and he's not in the real top ten fighter as the great heavyweight champion, he was ranked somewhere close to top ten. I aslo think Lennox Lewis is the cowardly lion who don't want to give the rematch with Vitali Klistchko, which made Lennox Lewis the chicken that he is. Most of the fighters Lewis fought was himself.

I don't believe Lewis is cowardly. He was 37 and he knew he was past his best. He has every right tor retire rather then fight Klitschko again, although he was pretty stupid to continue fighting after Tyson. He looked for the best fights throughout his career, but basically screwed himself out of big fights in the mid 90s with Holyfield and/or Bowe by losing to McCall (a Bowe-Lewis fight was already planned for after the fight against Oliver).
In a historical context, I view Lewis as a very good, but not all time great fighter. He, like Tyson, is a 'fringe great.' Tyson never beat any of the fellow elites of his era, and Lewis did but while none were near thier best (Tyson and Holyfield). He scraped by an old Evander (in the 2nd match) and Mercer, lost by knockout to two fringe contenders, and elevated himself in a very weak era (Grant, Tua, Rahman, Botha, Briggs). He also benefitted greatly from being in an era without 15 round championship fights. From all accounts he's a very nice and generous guy.

Lennox was a respectable champion. He reigned over his division and beat all contenders and avenged his two defeats. I respect him for that.
I would even have respected him for retiring when he did...but I can't there. The way he talked after the fight with Vitali ( about tearing up the other side of his face) were uncalled for when he had one of the toughest fights of his career and was lucky to get a win. I do think he was afraid to give Vitali a rematch because he couldn't back up what he said. Lewis had always been a talker but those comments were unneeded in my opinion. And for tying up the world championship for about 8 months before he made his announcement, he tied up the rest of the contenders who could take over.
But overall he was a great champion who will be in the hall of fame when his year goes in.

Stick to talking about fighters height.
You know I respect Lennox Lewis as the champion, but I don't like it when he mouthing off a former champion like Tyson. Also if Lennox Lewis ever wanted to fight Riddick Bowe in the first place, before Bowe would go to jail, he could make him get into the ring by putting the cartoon picture of him choking Bowe like Bowe was a chicken to make him come for Lewis.

1.) Marciano, Louis, Ali & Tunney all retired months after their last title fight, didn't they???...I guess that makes it a tradition....Sherlock wrote:Lennox was a respectable champion. He reigned over his division and beat all contenders and avenged his two defeats. I respect him for that.

2.) Lewis might have 'talked too much' at times but that too, is a tradition among heavyweights...is it not?
3.) If a guy is 37 or 38 years old, he should be thinking about retirement, before he gets hurt (like they all seem to if they go on too long against top tier competition)...
4.) I'm not sure why I'm defending Lennox Lewis, all of a sudden...I guess I miss him now that he's gone

With all due respect...are you even slightly aware of what has come out of Tyson's mouth over the last 15 years??? And you're mad because somebody mouthed off to him ????????????????????????????????kovit wrote:You know I respect Lennox Lewis as the champion, but I don't like it when he mouthing off a former champion like Tyson.

I am British and there was definatly a period when Britain "ruled" among the wee-men and the yanks "ruled" among the Big-men and with the Big-men being the more favoured, desired and profitable Britain was DESPERATE for these titles...
So along comes "fearless" Freddie the first British World Champion among the Big-men (I don't consider Fitzsimmons English) and wait and wait and wait...
50 years later we have Lenox Lewis, wow what a long wait, that maybe the true reason he goes down in History as an all-time great(?), international diplomacy!
But sorry to say, I don't think he is deserving of it... Sorry Lads, Damn Yanks.

Ok, but here's my spin on it:
As a three-time world champion, Lewis was the best of his era, was more consistent and beat a better list of opponents than the best of his contemporaries.
Holyfield pulled of two great victories, over Bowe and Tyson, but has a spotty heavyweight record: 20 wins, 7 losses and 2 draws. He never managed a sustained winning spell and was beaten at or near his peak by Bowe, Moorer and Lewis.
Tyson overcame several good heavies, but none were close to first tier, and he has now lost five times.
Bowe has an impressive record, with wins over Holyfield, but he also lost to Evander, and was twice beaten up by Golota.
Lewis in contrast was sidestepped by all three of the above, but beat Bowe as an amateur and eventually caught up with Holyfield and Tyson.
Plus George Foreman rates Lewis among the three best heavies of all time. Based on accomplishments, I think this is a bit generous, but in his peak years (1997-2002) Lewis' combination of assets was among the most formidable in heavyweight history.

First with all do respect for former Heavyweight Champion George Foreman, he started to act like an idiot rating Lennox Lewis was a piece of crap. I rather put George Foreman above Lennox Lewis. Here my list of the greatest Heavyweight champion of all-time:
1. Muhammad Ali
2. Joe Louis
3. You may not agreed with me, Mike Tyson
4. Evander Holyfield
5. George Foreman
6. Larry Holmes
7. Joe Frazier
8. Rocky Marciano
9. Sonny Liston
10. Lennox Lewis
1. Muhammad Ali
2. Joe Louis
3. You may not agreed with me, Mike Tyson
4. Evander Holyfield
5. George Foreman
6. Larry Holmes
7. Joe Frazier
8. Rocky Marciano
9. Sonny Liston
10. Lennox Lewis
Funny, you've put Holy and Tyson way above Lewis when he clearly outboxed and won against both. You're obviously biased. But it's your right to be so.
(Tyson was not at his prime, neither was Lewis, but he was in good shape. Tyson dodged Lewis in the earlier nineties. Holy lost twice to Lewis, but the latter got robbed. Holy was unified champ at the time.)
