The draw will apparently be the day before the tournament starts, and I will be out of town, so I don't know if I will be able to post it right away :-? .

I'm looking forward to discussing the results with all of you, let's hope the Russians and the Cubans leave some gold for everybody else.

Of course Grey, post away.

For those looking to do some research on the fighters, http://www.eaba.org/qual.html is pretty good. Generally, the later someone qualified, the worse they are - although there are undoubtedly some late comers.

In the first doping case of the Athens Olympics, a Kenyan boxer was barred from the games Tuesday after failing an out-of-competition drug test in the athletes' village.

Bantamweight David Munyasia, 24, tested positive for the banned stimulant cathine, the International Olympic Committee said.

The boxer was disqualified from the Athens Games, which open Friday.

The IOC board held a brief, closed-door meeting to discuss the case after the morning session of the committee's general assembly.

All athletes have been subject to random doping tests since the opening of the Olympic village on July 30.

During the games, which end Aug. 29, the IOC plans to conduct about 2,600 urine tests and 400 checks for the blood-boosting hormone EPO -- a 25 percent increase over the number of tests in Sydney four years ago.

The IOC said 224 tests have been conducted so far.

IOC medical director Patrick Schamasch said Munyasia arrived in Athens on Aug. 6 and was tested the same day. Both the A and B samples were positive, and the boxer had ``no explanation'' for the result, Schamasch said.

IOC officials said cathine is a common drug in east Africa and is found in khat, a leaf that is chewed for its amphetamine-like high.

The IOC referred Munyasia's case to the International Boxing Association for possible sanctions. Under international rules, a positive test for cathine warrants a two-year ban.

Well that about does it for the Kenyan contingent :-? . Munyasia didn't look like he had any hope of medaling though, unlike Bilali.

If a replacement can be brought in on such short notice, I'd guess it will be Lankwe Wilson of Ghana.

Being British, naturally I'm hoping Amir Khan can get a decent draw in the prelims and box his way into medal contention. :TU:

I'm also very excited about seeing the Cuban Bantamweight Rigondeaux. I last saw him in the Belfast World Championships and he was poetry in motion. As near as you can get to flawless.

It's probably already been mentioned (this is a long thread) but when is the draw for the 60 KGs ?

The draw for the 60kg will be made, I believe, the day before the tournament starts. I'm not exactly sure though.

I think the 60kg will be one of the most interesting weights, because it is Russia's weakest weight, and generally not as strong in Europeans and Central Asians. After Kindelan, it looks pretty wide open, and we might see some surprise medalists if they get a good draw. Khan has as good a shot as any, although I guess the next best bets for medals at that weight are Aydun Selcuk, Gyula Kate, Dimitar Stilianov and the Asian champion Baik Jong-Sub. But this could be a spot where Africa or another from the Americas can get a silver or bronze.

They also just announced that they at last also have a reliable test for synthetic human growth hormone (HGH), and they will be mass-screening for it. If that's true, expect a *lot* of folks to get busted - buttholes are probably puckering up tight all over the Olympic village as we speak. ;)

The IOC isn't divulging precisely how the HGH doping test works, but from what I've heard, the human pituitary gland naturally produces a whole spectrum of HGH molecules, all with slightly different molecular weights. Apparently the synthetic HGH is much more uniform, and (at least so far) only comes in one or two different moecular forms, so if an athlete's blood HGH profile is dominated by one of those - busted.

I'm confident by 2008 the dopers will have gotten wise to this testing scheme, but at least it should be reliable for these Olympics.

Ihor Pashchuk, a light welterweight from Ukraine, won't compete in the Olympics after failing a medical exam before Friday's weigh-in.

Pashchuk, 20, qualified for the Olympics with an improbable run to the final of the European Championships, which included a semifinal win over French Olympian Willy Blain. Pashchuk then failed to weigh in for the final.

Boxing officials didn't disclose the reason for Pashchuk's failed physical.

Kenya bantamweight David Munyasia was thrown out of the games Tuesday after testing positive for a banned stimulant.

Freiheit, thanks for posting that. i'd recommend to everyone that they look at the brackets at the Athens2004.com site, which is a bit hard to navigate, but has excellent information and gives the exact times each match will be happening. Here are my unsolicited thoughts at each weight.

48kg
The top medal group (groups of 8, meaning the winner is guaranteed a medal) looks to be a cakewalk for Kazakov. He also avoided Barthelemy before the final, but might face Pal Bedak in the semi. Rau'Shee Warren got a very tough 1st-round oppnent in Zou Shiming, and will probably go out to Zou, who I would say is the favorite the win that medal group. Barthelemy is the leader in the bottom group, but there are some tough Asian challengers down there from Korea, Thailand and the Philippines.
GOLD - Kazakov
SILVER - Barthelemy
BRONZE - Bedak, Shiming

51kg
The top group is totally wide open, so I think Colombia and Venezuela have a good chance to medal here, as the German Rahimov is nothing special. The second group is an absolute killer - you have the world champion Jongjohor, the favorite Balakshine, the Cuban Gamboa and fighters from South Korea and Kazakhstan. Whoever makes it out of that is going to be beat up. That leaves the other side of the draw pretty open. The third group has no clear favorite, maybe look for Nikoloz Izoria or Fuad Aslanov. The bottom group has Jerome Thomas, who has a great draw to get to the gold medal fight. Ron Siler got pretty lucky with the draw, but would be in tough with Payla or Doniyarov in the second-round and then would likely have to beat Thomas to get a medal.
GOLD - Thomas
SILVER - Balakshine
BRONZE - Mendoza, Mesbahi

54kg
Again, the top group is pretty open, although I think Sultanov is the favorite. Kooner is Canada's best and might surprise there. Rigondeaux leads the second group and will have to beat Kovalev or Hallab to medal, so that should open things in other groups. The third groups is not strong, so look for a surprise medalist - Juan Lopez maybe. Agassi Mamedov has a very good draw on the bottom, opening things for him to meet Rigondeaux in the final.
GOLD - Rigondeux
SILVER - Mamedov
BRONZE - Sultanov, Lopez

57kg
Again, the top group is really open, I would guess that North Korean Kim Song Guk may be able to squeeze a bronze. The second group is really tough. Franco, Tajbert and Djelkhir are all together - I think the draw may favor Franco over Tajbert. Whoever wins there will surely fight for the gold. My choice Likar Ramos has a good chance in group three, with tough challenges from Viorel Simion and Somluck Kumsing. Galib Jafarov looks very strong on the bottom group. He may get challenged by fellow ex-Soviets Khidirov and Imranov, but looks strong to fight for the gold.
GOLD - Jafarov
SILVER - Franco
BRONZE - Kim, Ramos

60kg
Yet again, the top group is totally wide open. I'd look for the winner of the Diaz-Yeleyov fight to get the bronze. The second group doesn't have Kindelan, but is really tough. You have Stilianov, Kate, Selcuk and Khan all in there - the cream of the European crop - plus the Asian champion Baik. Kindelan rules the third group - shouldn't be challenged too much. Escobedo could win twice, but would have to beat Kindelan to medal. The bottom group is open and will provide another surprise medalist - this could be Australia's best chance to nick a bronze behind Anthony Little.
GOLD - Kindelan
SILVER - Stilianov
BRONZE - Diaz, Little

64kg
The top group will be decided between Cedeno and Mahmudov - Cedeno is one of Cuba's weaker entrants though. Rock Allen got a great draw and could make it to the gold-medal fight. De Dios Navarro has a tougher draw but might challenge Allen for that spot. So this time the bottom is hard, with the third group being super tough. You have Willy Blain and Alexander Maletin together, with some very tough second-teir fighters. The bottom group doesn't have a clear favorite, but I'd rate Patric Lopez with the best shot.
GOLD - Lopez
SILVER - Mahmudov
BRONZE - Allen, Maletin

69kg
Again, no clear favorite in the top group, but several good fighters in Grusac, Kim, Balog and Novoa. Hard to choose from that group. Martirosyan has Aragon and Khairov in his group, but its not impossible for him. Saitov looks placed to roll through the third group. The bottom group is even but tough, with a great first-round matchup between Berto and Noel.
GOLD - Saitov
SILVER - Khairov
BRONZE - Grusac, Berto

75kg
Golovkin looks like the clear favorite in the top group. Dirrell has a good draw - he has the Cuban Despaigne in his group, but I'm pretty sure he's beaten him before. Dirrell has a draw that can take him to the gold-medal fight if he stays focused. Gaiderbekov is the clear favorite in the third group. The bottom group is pretty even, with Taghiev and Wilaschek perhaps the favorites.
GOLD - Gaiderbekov
SILVER - Dirrell
BRONZE - Golovkin, Taghiev

81kg
Terrible, terrible draw for Ward. That top group is a killer with Ward, Makarenko and Yoan Hernandez. The gold will come from that group. The second group is not easy either, with Beibut Shumenov being very very good and Haydarov no pushover. So, with the best talent on the top, the bottom is very open. The third group is a total guess, although I'd favor Pavlidis - Greece's best with the home-field advantage. The bottom group is also hard to pick, but Mexico's Ramiro Reducindo may have a good shot. There will be a surprise finalist in this weight.
GOLD - Makarenko
SILVER - Pavlidis
BRONZE - Shumenov, Reducindo

91kg
Solis Fontes and Alexseev meet straight off - terrible for them, great for everyone else. I favor Solis Fontes slightly. Izonritei has a good draw to get a medal for Nigeria, Alakparov will be tough though. Vargas has a decent draw, but he will have to face Zuyev in his second fight and that could end his medal hopes. But Vargas has a shot to make the final if he can beat Zuyev, because the bottom group is not strong, with perhaps Alborov the favorite.
GOLD - Solis Fontes
SILVER - Zuyev
BRONZE - Izonritei, Djipalo

+91kg
The top group is really tough, but Povetkin is the favorite and should remove Kober and Dildabekov from medal contention. Cammarelle is the favorite in the second group, but I would always fear a Nigerian super-heavy, who he has to beat in his first fight. Bisbal has a great chance of medaling in the sub-par third group. Estrada has a tougeher draw - he will likely meet the winner of the Lopez-Saidov fight, and can hope the winner is tired out.
GOLD - Povetkin
SILVER - Bisbal
BRONZE - Cammarelle, Estrada

Emile, I would actually prefer URL links to the draws, rather than pages and pages of text. I couldn't find a link to the draw on the Athens2004.com boxing page - could you provide?

Tough luck for my hometown boy Andre Ward - looks like it's all or nothing for him. I must say I find the single-elimination-with-no-seeding format utterly idiotic - since the matches are so short and protective equipment is worn, why not do an initial double-elimination round-robin round, with the results of that determining seeding for the remaining 50% of athletes?

Also, I told you the butthole-puckering about the new drug tests had begun:
