Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
What you all think?
i can't help but think that McDerrmott wasn't going to win if he'd been allowed to continue, but some fights have been won after a heavy knockdown.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
that was a rediculous decision though!
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
I actually thought he ruined the fun... but did the right thing.
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
Refs do seem to be stopping fights earlier .. is it because like us they can see an overmatched opponent . and are waiting for any excuse to save the guy from too much punishment merely to pad a record?
The refs in there to protect the fighters, the initial match-up is out of their hands, but they probably see no reason to watch a guy take a beating or get ko`ed.
maybe we should be questioning the one sided fights that make up most fight cards..

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
it was stopped too quick , McDermott was ok to continue, you carnt stop fights on the bases of what you think might happen especially as McDermott although behind was still in the fight. He was not outclassed the way mcquigan was trying to say.
Last week sexton was wobbling round the ring half asleep with his hands down and Parris lets it continue. Theirs no consistency with these referees and the quick stoppages this weekend have been shocking.

i think what barry mcguigan said was bull to be honest. should all fights be stopped just because the fighter who gets knocked down hasnt won any rounds yet. he'd have stopped the calzaghe v hopkins fight in the first minute lol
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
McGuigan just backs the home fighter, he has done for years.kingfinn wrote:i think what barry mcguigan said was bull to be honest. should all fights be stopped just because the fighter who gets knocked down hasnt won any rounds yet. he'd have stopped the calzaghe v hopkins fight in the first minute lol

McDerrmott was gone, if he had been allowed to continue it was only delaying the inevitable, he had been eating that right hand from round 2 onwards.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
but he wasn't 'gone' . Yes he had stiff legs, and was hurt, but fighters have come back from that before. In 98% of fights they don't , but in the 2% that do , is the reason we watch boxingHagler2002 wrote:McDerrmott was gone, if he had been allowed to continue it was only delaying the inevitable, he had been eating that right hand from round 2 onwards.
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
exactly! what next round by round boxing where if your behind on points or it doesnt look like your going to win they just stop the fight whilst your in the corner.Old bones Ian wrote:but he wasn't 'gone' . Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
And this is a championship fight, this is the fight punters are paying to see, chances for titles don't come round often, you have to give the fighter every opportunity. Yes he may well get knocked out but this is professional boxing for christs sakekingfinn wrote:exactly! what next round by round boxing where if your behind on points or it doesnt look like your going to win they just stop the fight whilst your in the corner.Old bones Ian wrote:but he wasn't 'gone' . I have to say, I really don't mind seeing overmatched opponents being stopped early. We have so many mismatches in the UK, and there's little of any edification in seeing someone with no chance being battered from pilllar to post merely for the gratification of those who want to see the coup-de-grace administered.
If someone is still in the fight - and they have a leveller such as a big punch, and the fight is still competitive, then by all means let it continue.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
Nah, Barry was right - he wasn't in it, he was getting beaten up. Sure the ref stopped it a little quick, but he'd have been stopping it within 30 seconds anyway.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
I didn't see the fight, but If someone is gone and they are going to take another 10-20 shots before getting marmalised, then I'm all for stopping it.
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
I think a ref should only stop the fight if he feels the person is in no fit state to continue, or is unable to defend himself.
As coco says, this IS a boxing match, its should not be up to the referee to pull a fighter out to save a fighter from taking more punches if that fighter can still defend himself, as seemed to be the case tonight.
a ref can jump in at any time, of course- he doesn't need to stop it right after a knockdown.
Sensible thing would be to let the fighter box on, and if he clearly was in danger, THEN jump right in.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
I think the key is consistency , theres no way that fight should have been stopped. Bernard dunne went on to win a fight after 2 kds in one rd and looked out on his feet
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
Remember this is a title fight not a prospect v an 0-8 fighter

Dunne has the home fighter thoughmetropol wrote:I think the key is consistency , theres no way that fight should have been stopped. Bernard dunne went on to win a fight after 2 kds in one rd and looked out on his feet

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
Yes thats my point, i do feel that McDerrmott did everything you'd want your boxer to do, watched the count and got up at 8, his legs were a bit stiff , but he wasn't wobbling or falling. As the fight is stopped due to 'The boxer not being able to defend himself' , that wasn't the case.Coco wrote:Remember this is a title fight not a prospect v an 0-8 fighter
Barry McGuigan knows more than any of us about tragedy's in the ring, one of his early opponents Young Ali died after being stopped by McGuigan, so i can understand why he see's it the way he does.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
McDerrmott was never in it, I'm sure the referee would have taking this into account when waving it off.
Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
The fact is McDermott wasnt in danger, he wasnt out of it, and he wasnt being massively outclassed. The Fury v Belshaw fight was a massively one sided fight, they let him get knocked down 3 times and that wasnt a title fight.
You cant stop a fight just because you think someone isnt going to win. Anyone remember seeing the Earl fight for the European title shot, when his corner threw in the towel and before it had even left the trainers hand he knocked out the other fighter but lost the fight because the towel was in. Trainer got sacked i believe. lol

mcdermott was looking straight into the referee's eyes and it was still stopped.
pathetic.

That shouldn't be his decision, though.Iron Lotus wrote:McDerrmott was never in it, I'm sure the referee would have taking this into account when waving it off.

Far too soon. It's a hard argument to make without sounding morbid though.

Re: Are the refs stopping fights to soon?
This is the fight game. I think fighters deserve every chance. They do need protecting from themselves sometimes though e.g Paul Ingle.
However, you can't stop fights after one knockdown if the fighter has shown he is still coherent and can fight on.
