What is the point in Matthew Thirlwall's carrer

having just seen a comment about thirlwall on another post I looked him up on boxrec remembering seeing him lose and then reverse a decision against Garey Beardsly when I was at University and wondering how his career had panned out, I hadn't heard of him in a while so was curious for anyone who doesn't know you can see his record hearhttp://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?hu ... &cat=boxer if your fighting someone who is 9-3-1 in your 22nd fight and you have previously been beaten by people who are 13-30-6 and 23-12-3 your probably never going to be good enough to step it up. Now I respect anyone who fights for a living that is a given but is it really doing anything for the fans to have a record like this and never to have even fought for an area title.

But to be fair, his record is pretty standard for a "prospect," except it lacks the "0" in the losses collumn.

Prospects really look to step up to area level after a couple of years and 15 or so fights, he's been fighting a lot longer and hasn't had the gradual steps up as well as falling short at the prospect level, the reson prospects have '0's is because they are a class above the level at which they fight. He seems a nice lad and all but I just don't see him going anywhere and as a fan am not sure what I'd get out of seeing him fight (usually even when you watch over matched journymen being beaten up by prospects there's a 1-20 chance one day you can tell your mates I saw ... fighting at the york hall in front of 1000 people!

Thirwall was a top class amateur, won his ABA title with a stoppage in every fight, but has underachieved badly, however he is still young enough to do something and I don't begrudge him one last roll of the dice

Not any more! Seems area titles are now used just occassionally, for small hall shows, usually for more experieced fighters- given them a belt to fight for etc.
