The former Irish Light-welterweight champion, Oisin Fagan took on the former Bulgarian champion, Assen Vassilev last night, on a DolPhil Promotions card at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar Co. Mayo. It was Fagan's first fight back since breaking his leg in the first round VS Amir Khan in December and he didn't disappoint, stopping the tough Bulgarian in 5 rounds.

When most people talk about Fagan, words like 'hard, ''aggressive', 'gritty', 'tenacious' and 'tough' spring to mind; however, while these attributes were certainly in full-effect during this encounter, he brought a lot more skill to the table than we've seen in his previous fights. His head movement was very impressive and he made Vassilev miss on countless occasions. The second round was a big round for Fagan, as he dropped Vassilev with a beautiful body shot, resulting with his opponent gasping for air. Thirty seconds later and Vassilev was down again by the constant pressure that Fagan applied.

Vassilev, was successful on rare occasions with long, swinging over-hand rights, which always made him dangerous, but Fagan slipped, ducked and countered beautifully and in the fifth round, he piled the pressure on and put the Bulgarian down for the last time with a crunching right hook to the body. Referee, Mickey Vann stopped the onslaught half way through the round, which brought Fagan's record to 23 wins, with 6 losses (14 KO's).

After the fight Fagan said, "The nightmare is over. These past 6 months have been hell for me, since breaking my leg in the Khan fight. I had to wait all this time before I could rectify that in my mind and redeem myself. Now I can look forward to my next fight- it's like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Onwards and upwards!"

Indeed, Fagan might be looking for one more tune-up fight before he challenges Andrew Murray for his EU and Irish title. Or, a tasty fight might see Fagan drop to super-featherweight and challenge for Eddie Hyland's Irish title. Hyland was also in action last night in Castlebar, looking impressive, by dismantling his Latvian opponent, Juris Ivanovs in less than a round.

Hyland's record improves to 12 wins 1 loss (4 KO's).

Somewhat, but I was at that fight and Fagan did very well- he was by far the most entertaining fighter on that card.

Considering he's based back in Ireland now and being trained in Breen's gym I'd assume so.
I don't think he'd fair too well against Andy Murray but if he can get down to Super-Featherweight him and Eddie Hyland would be a great scrap.

I don't think he's with the Breen camp now, as he's been training in Dublin with Phil Sucliffe. And he hasn't been with Stacy for a while now. It was a good win for him. He fought very well and got back from a tough few months when people thought he was done. A fight V Hyland would be a great scrap, but I think a Murray-Fagan fight would be a cracker too. Murray is probably the more skilful, but having said that, Murray hasn't been in with anyone as tough as Fagan throughout his career, thus far. It would be interesting to see how he'd cope with the pressure.

What does fighting Fagan do for Murray? He wouldn't even be able to get a notch on his British title so that in the Thaxton fight, they both are eligible to win the Lonsdale belt outright.

I can't see why Murray needs to fight Fagan.

I was a bit disappointed with Andy on the O2 show but the Spaniard was a lot betetr than he was given credit for.
I think there is a lot more in Andy but he needs to up the opposition, fast. He's 26 and 13 or 14 fights unbeaten. He needs to avoid treading water and give it a lash.

No i think John would destroy Fagan but i think he would beat Andrew but not destroy him and i think Andy would also beat Fagan but it would be closer than if John fought Fagan if that makes sense

It thats is the case (something makes me think it is) then Fagan deserves a crack at Murray seeing as Gorman has retired from the ring.

Big Ears, Fagan is not signed to Breens but was traveling up with Jim Rock to train and spar out of Breens when he returned to Ireland. Fagan probably still travels up to Breens but I'm not 100% i haven't heard from him in a while, might had to drop him a line and see whats on the cards now.
