I saw the 60 kg USA boxer today who won. Havent seen that many bouts. The russian 57 kg was really good. My boxer lost to the russian at 48 kg 3-2. It was 2-2 going into the last and really close. The scoring is very low. Tomorrow I will watch Robeisy Ramirez, the cubans say he is something special. He is unbeaten in 127 bouts...

Yeah, thats me. Do I know you?
Today the cuban star Robeisy Ramirez boxed and yes, he was very good but really I had hoped for more. Probably I had too high expectations. He was more like a Yordenis Ugas or Carlos Banteaux good rather than a Guillermo Rigondeaux or Mario Kindelan good if you understand what I mean. I didn’t get the “wow” feel, like for a Gamboa or Rigo. He did have great technical fundamentals but got countered a couple of times against a tall, useful irish boxer. Ramirez, a smooth southpaw, had good variety of punches but didn’t have the explosiveness you expect of a superstar Cuban boxer. He got better for every round though showing some good moves.
There was also a very good kazakh at 75 kg. In the evening session there were some excellent bouts. The best was the little armenian at 46 kg, the most impressive so far. The russian at 50 kg who beat the cuban was great too. The americans had a mixed day but good showings from Ray Ximenez and Dmitrius Ballard.

Lo: what happened to the Russian Uzlyan at 52,was he losing when he was disqualified?
Ramirez might be tested by Thapa the indian boxer who has a good record.

NAh, you don't know me, I just guessed it from what you wrote. I'm Torben Keller's trainer, from Denmark... :)

I've realized that most of the kids on the USA team didn't win the National Junior Olympics. Shouldn't the fighters that won the Nationals, go to the WJC.

Uzlyan was amazing the first round of his bout against the kazakh but then he suddenly fell apart, losing his distance which led him to go in with his head, turning around, etc. The referee finally tired and DQed him.

The americans have been awful. Not a single medal. They had some close decisions but no one really impressed me. The armenians have been given some real gift decisions. Those two bouts against the russians were disgraceful. Reminds me of the World Youths in Mexico...

Ecuador has been doing great. They have two in the semis and they are really good.

Robeisy Ramirez stopped his opponent today and looked good but as I said, I did expect more of him.

I dont remember the indian 52 kg but they have a tremendous 50 kg boxer.

Could you be more specific, loco? Was it an effort thing or skills? Strength? I'm just interested in your opinion of what we were lacking. On paper, we sent our best out there. . .

I'm now back from Armenia. It was a good championship with many decent boxers but I lacked a new superstar. The Armenian 46 kg Soghomonyan got the best boxer trophy and he was good but sometimes he had problems in his bouts (though not reflected by the scores). The Irish boy Joe Ward was really good and was the second candidate for best boxer. He stopped three of his four opponents and had great boxing skills.
The russians had a great team and I'd pick 50 kg Sobylinski followed by 66 kg Andrey Egorov.
The cubans didn't have that good a team this year but 57 kg winner Arlen Lopez and 52 kg Robeisy Ramirez were good representatives for cuban boxing. Ramirez was robbed in his semi-final against the belarussian. He did start slowly in a close first round (he somehow lost 0-2), then upped the pace in the second only to find himself down 7-1 into the last where he went for an allout finish, knocked down Baranchyk and then knocked him down again only for the referee to rule it a slip (the bout would've been stopped). The judges did him no favor scoring the bout 11-6 (2 extra points to Ramirez due to holding of Baranchyk in the last).
The judging was awful going into the semis. It was almost impossible to beat an armenian. When president Wu came for the semis it got better and the armenians lost almost all their remaining bouts.
