Found the following in the Toronto Star: November 2nd, 1925; St.John, NB. Jack Ward lost on a foul in 9th to Roy Mitchell of Halifax. Both were "negro" heavies. "He (Mitchell) had the best of the bout from the sixth round on and Ward was hanging on the ropes in the 9th just before he hit his opponent low."
Also according to a later Toronto Star article, Ward's manager was Montrealer Jack Rogers. In this article Rogers claimed that his charge had previously beaten "Bill Tate and knocked out Kid Norfolk in one round." Toronto Star Feb.8, 1927. - rec. Number 040314.
Hey Cap -- keep your eye out for Hemmingeay's coveage of some of the fights up there in Toronto -- he was working for the Star in the mid-20s. I recall he covered at least one fight card for his column.
