a lot of threads are mentioning the olympic boxing tourney. this makes it a bit difficult to follow what everyones thinking so ive had a wee idea... lets just have on thread and try to keep all our olympic thoughts here!!
what about making this a sticky for the wee while that the boxing is running?
I havent seen too much of it so far. as ive said on another thread i was impressed by Andy Lee although I did think his mexican opponent was a little one dimensional but take nothing away from Lee he boxed very well, though his lapses in concentration were a bit of a worry.
form the couple of rounds i caught of one of the other bouts it looked a cracker where Javid Taghiyev from azerbijan (i think) beat the greek guy Georgios Gazis 32-31 in the last few seconds
Also noted that the subject of another post, new zealander Soulan Pownceby who was convicted of manslaughter after killing his 5 month old daughter was stopped in the 3rd by Ihsan Tarhan of turkey

Well, from what I have seen I think there should be some kind of overhaul of the current qualification system. I saw a Supermiddleweight (?) bout between a fighter from China and a fighter from Cameroon and I was frankly shocked and dissapointed at the standard of these two. They were wailing away, mostly slapping and not hitting correctly.
How are these guys allowed to box in the Olympics when there are good fighters from Britain not.
I do think the system needs to be relaxed somewhat - the Olympic football competition has been going on for a week now, I think more boxers should be allowed to take part and make the tornament should be a week longer.

Can anyone answer a couple of questions:
1. Can the fighters/ cornermen see the scores? By the suprised look on some of the fighter's faces at the decision I guess they can't but can the cornermen? I went to the boxing at the Sydney Olympics, and I couldn't see the score but to be honest I couldn't see much from the back row...
2. It seems that you don't get any extra points for a knockdown, just the point you get anyway for the clean punch. Is that right?

Do the fighters from the African nations and Asia have to undergo the same toruments as the Brits/European. Europe is the continent with most qualifing spots, its not like that all 5 continents have the same amount of spots, ie- Oceania only has 1 spot in each division.
Mexico qualifies in the "americas" tournaments, so they qualify in the same tournaments as USA, Cuba, the carribian and all of the south and latin american countries.

Cheers for that, I didn't realise that - I thought the USA were allowed one entry per weight class (USA champs winner), I thought the same for the Cubans. Sorry to be a pain, does this mean that a mexican has taken the place of a fighter from Cuba or USA. Could there be more than one USA fighter per weight class (i.e. is there another way that the Yanks can qualify).

USA only have 9 fighters at these olympics (11 divisions) Cuban has a full team. In most divisions Americas has around 6 spots were Europe will have a couple more. But it is also different from weight to weight. In super heavy Europe has 7 spots out of 16, while europe only has 8 spots in light flyweight out of 30.
Clearly its more easy to qualify from the oceanian group. 9 of the 11 are australians.
There can only be 1 from each country in each division

There were one from New Zealand this year. He was the one that killed his own 5 month old daughter. The Haitian Berto was fighting in sperts though left hook, pacing himself for bursts of punches, i thought Noel's cleaner classier work won it for him. Don't know if he will be a sufficient threat for the medals though. I don't normally watch Amateur Boxing too much but i am really getting into this tournament! I can't wait for tomorrow's installment.
From today's Welterweight action i enjoyed the Husanov-Prada fight, although Husanov looked knackered at the end! Steve Holdsworth's commentary was a bit poor tonight though i thought tonight, he was a bit harsh on the Lithuanian Jasevicius, after only 30 seconds of action he was saying how he looked poor and that Bashirov had an easy night ahead...then he was constantly bleating on how he couldn't realise how this guy had qualified, i've seen much worse fighters
His statements were too outlandish, in the first round claiming fight's were "over all ready" and that "so and so looks poor and has no chance", "he could win this fight but of course he won't" is what he said during Di Rocco-Rojas and Rojas was winning on points at the time!

Eurosport's timing is shit, i switch on at 7.40 pm well in time for the 7.45 start time and find it already into round 3 of the first fight!
