Nowadays it seems like having a good amaetur record or long amateur backround has almost become a criteria for having a future as a professional.
Yet, some good pros had neither. Here are some examples:
Tex Cobb, 0-2
Rocky Marciano, 8-4
Don King, 2-2 (never turned pro, but made tons of money of boxing)
Hasim Rahman, 7-2
Michael Grant, 11-1
Jameel McCline, 1-1

How are 7-2 and 11-1 a poor amateur records? In terms of volume of fights then yes, but win ratio wise, they're good records.

Yes, they're not bad records, but they aren't what you'd call a long amateur backround, which was one of the criterias I called for.

Harry Jeffra -a slow starter- was a pro champ, but as an amateur he had about 26 or 27 fights and only won one.....

Maybe im mistaken but I thought Hopkins was incarcerated when he was 18 until he was like 24 or 25. So I cant see how he could have 99 am fights. I could be wrong.

If I am not mistaken, Terrible Terry Norris had an average amateur career at best according to what I have heard.

Don King realy fought in the amatures or was that some kind of joke?
Julio Garcia has no amature backround.
Kelvin Davis has had only 7 amature fights.
Lance Witaker also has no amature backround.(I think)

Hopkins had fights in prison, which is where that record comes from.

Qawi actually had NO amatuer fights! ANd he won a title in like his 16th fight (or something like that, too lazy to refresh my memory and look it up).
Talk about a quick learner. BUt he did do a lot of boxing in prison. Just sparring though, no real bouts.

Lance Whitaker actually had a good amateur carrer he won a national championship(the olympic festival) and went to the pan-am games in 95(bronze medal) and had many fights international against Cuban and Russian.
I don't knew how many fight he had cause he started late but he had good opposition.

Probably way off the subject, but what have most of the top Mexican pros of the past and present done in the amateur game previously?
Chavez `s son I recently read had 2 amateur fights before turning pro, I know next to nothing of the amateur game so would like to know if this is a normal thing for the Mexicans?
