My father steve surowiecki fight name (steve carr)was ranked high in top ten for light heavyweights in US back in the 1930's. He was the champion of new england and fought and defeated Max Marek in madison squre garden three years after Max had defeated Joe Louis for the amat. AAU title. Can anyone provide me with more information about my father. I was very young when he died. He was only 40 when he passed.
Love to know how I can find out who he fought as an amateur. I have his pro fights as listed on boxing record. He defeated Nathan Mann who also fought Joe Louis. I met Lou Viscuzi his manager shortly before he died and he gave me a photo of steve that had been under the ring apron for decades. He told me, he could have been world champ but other fighters would not give him title shot, too risky. When we met the first thing he said was, "Your dad never threw a fight". Would like to know if back in those days, not throwing a fight in your career at least once had some bearing on not getting a title shot? He owned steve carr's restaurant and tavern after her retired in meridan conn. and would like to know if he met any other famous fighters when he was alive or other athletes, celebs. etc. Love to no more about him. Any exhib. fights he may have had etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I was only 8 years old when he passed. I would love to share this inf. with my children.
