How much difference do trainers make to a fighter ?

How much difference do trainers make to fighters......?

I ask this question as someone who has never boxed and so this question is directed to either boxers or trainers, amatuer or professional. I once read a quote from a trainer, who's name i can't now recollect, who said that there was no such thing as great trainers, only trainers, training great fighters. More recently, Floyd Mayweather Snr dismissed Freddie Roach's work with Pacquaio, more or less hinting that, as with his own son, Floyd Jr, Roach was gaining credentials, not because he was exceptionally different to other coaches, but because he was training a great fighter and the subsequent qudos of success rubs off because of that fact.

Is it the case that trainers can alter the one of the following, some of the following or all of the following :

1. A Fighter's style ?

2. A Fighter's conditioning ?

3. A fighter's tactical awareness ?

4. A fighters emotional and psychological well-being ?

Does the trainers abilities to gain results from a fighter's performance directly relate to the fighter's natural talent ? As an example, would have manny Pacquaio have had his recent performances with no trainer at all or with a different trainer to Freddie Roach, say Buddy McGirt or Manny Steward ? Are some trainers only able to take a fighter so far ? So, as an example, would Richie Woodhall's dad be capable of training Manny Pacquaio and getting the same results as Freddie Roach or is he limited to training lesser talented fighters ? Would Enzo Calzaghe have had the capability to prepare Floyd Mayweather for a fight, as opposed to Roger Mayweather. Or, is it simply the case, that fighter's require different trainers for different stages of their career's ?

You don't neccessarily have to answer all these points, just put down what your opinions are, because as a non boxer, the influence of the trainer to a fighter's career has always intrigued and interested me. As i said earlier, anyone can comment, but i'm particularly interested in the views of boxers or trainers, amateur or professional.

Thanks very much :TU:

Do you think that there is such a thing as "great trainers" ? Or do you believe that a trainers ultimate succes, can only be determind by the talent of the fighter he is working alongside ? As an example, do you think that Freddie Roach would have done a better job than Enzo Clazaghe, with regards to Gavin Rees or Enzo Maccranelli ?

There are some fighters that no boxers can help but if you have a good trainer it helps like if Pacquiao had someone like Mayweather or Calzaghe i dont believe he would have done as well because Pac and Roach have good chemistray and Roach knows the strength and weakness's of fighters so without making his fighters better he sends them out with good gameplans on how to beat them so yes it does make a diffrence if you have a bad trainer

Almost like finding the right jockey for the right horse ? Certain riders will have an edge over others, even if they are seen as being on the same level. Iv'e always thought that the connection between a trainer and his fighter, is one of the most important aspects, with regards to how well a fighter will do.

I trained a kid he never lost with me i knew him better than he knew himself , he listened to another trainer who was more high profile and very adapt at pinching other peoples hard work , any way he listened left me lost 5 in a row came back won another 4 straight , he then listened to another promoter telling him he should come and join them bla bla bla , lost 3 fights wanted to come back and was told to fack off.

Basicly the kid was a good fighter I HAS A TRAINER COULD NOT OFF KEPT HIM WINNING WITHOUT HIM HAVING THE SKILL LEVEL , SO IN THAT REGARDS ITS THE FIGHTER MAKES THE TRAINER .
but with saying that the kid had a confidence problem and i knew excatly what buttons to press with him and excatly how to handle him to get the best out off him . when he left and lost it was all about them trainers not knowing him like i did he had the skill just like thousands off others he did'nt have it mentaly . The relationship Hatton had with his trainer and Pacman has with Roach is prove in point , Hatton cannot seem to gel with other trainers Billy knew how to bring the best out in him just like Roach does now with pacman , But without the boxers having the talent they could'nt do it to that level .

Trainers are very important just look at the ameteur coaches around some have 10 lads in the gym and 8 are top fighters , and 5 years later they have another ten and 8 ARE GOOD FIGHTERS , THEN YOU HAVE TO SAY THAT TRAINER IS TEACHING HIS LADS WELL AND DEFINETLY A INFLUENCE
