Wille Limon World Champion farce
Willie Limond won the WBU title on Saturday, here are some snipped from an artical I read about it... some comments from Limond.
"A lot of people slag off this belt but I am delighted to have won it," he said.
"Ricky Hatton won it and defended this belt I don't know how many times, so I'm happy.
I want to defend my title at Firhill because I'm a Partick Thistle fan and it feels brilliant to be world champion. I'll take on anybody
Anybody else disgusted by these comments??
1. It's NOT a "world title" and doesn't make you a "world chamption".
2. It's disrespectful and insulting to the fans intelligence to actually call yourself a world champion.
3. Ricky Hatton started this WBU bollocks
4. A lot of people slag of the belt because its A JOKE.
5. Lets hope Limmond doesn't do a "Farnell" with the belt and start treating it like the pound for pound title and calling himself a true world champion.

Disgusted? No
Laughing? Yes
Reminds me of Mundines comments the other night - "I... am... the new... middleweight... champion... of the world... IBO baby.."
Absolute farce I agree, but it's the board who sanction these bouts for nonsense titles, the buck stops with them.

Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
Just as the WBU is beginning to die a death in the UK, Limmond goes and tries to revive it. I don't see how beating the English super-feather champ makes you a lightweight world champ Willie...
A more meaningful and credible route for him would be to seekt to recapture the vacant Commonwealth belt.

Cut Willie some slack. Never typed that before.
But he was very unlucky not to have had Khan counted out (it would've happened if he'd been the one getting up late in the count) and that could've made him a heap of dough.

There is a dilemna here:
Please that a boxer is so proud of winning a title and good luck to him - however - I blame those people around the lad who hype up the b*llocks to something that its not!!

I've rattled on about this issue for so long it's untrue. I used to say the same thing about the IBF when I was a kid.oilup wrote:Willie Limond won the WBU title on Saturday, here are some snipped from an artical I read about it... some comments from Limond.

It's true. As I've said, there will be some poor deluded Aberdonian bastards wandering around their town under the assumption that Lee McAllister is a two-weight world champion because it said it in his local paper.
They simply shouldn't be allowed to called themselves world champions. If it is within the Board's power to stop this garbage, they should do so.
I used to say the same when Hatton was riding this, much to the delight of his promoter. 8)
Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
All of these alphabet organisations are shite anyway, the WBA and IBF have by far surpassed the WBO for stupidity recently and the WBC is ran by Sulaiman which says it all really.

Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
Is Limond the only WBU champion?
It seemed to have died out, their website hasn't been updated in a year and still lists Michael Jennings as one of two champions (the other being Choi Tsveenpurev)

ah cut the lad some slack, hes just trying to make a few quid.
Incidently, i dont think hatton started this WBU nonsense, shea neary?
I dont mind any1 winning one of those belts providing they dont pretend to be the best thing in the world, and willie admits in his quote that people dont rate the belt so whats the prob?
They allow the fighter to earn in a short hard career.
(also on a side note: that was a good win. limonds racking up an impressive CV domestically. Choi Tseveenpurev, O Hara, Burns, Watson, Harry Ramogoadi! could be some fun nights ahead).

Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
Mate we don't need the deceptive "World champion" comments, which are insulting to us as boxing fans and downright unethical to the normal fans. Limmon is calling himself a "World Champion" when he clearly isn't anywhere near. We saw the same thing with the likes of Neary and Farnell. It's disgraceful and the majority of boxing fans are disgusted. The WBU is basically Warrens organization. I really am ashamed of boxers like Limmond WHO KNOW WHAT THE STORY IS, but put on a public conjob and try to decieve the fans for money... it's just LOW in my humble opinion.stevieb_8006 wrote:ah cut the lad some slack, hes just trying to make a few quid.

Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
I always tell this story when false organisations are involved but I think it's worthy of being recycled again.
Whenever I was writing out the alphabet article for BBN I rang the WBU from the number on their website for some quotes and was met with a bemused woman from Cambridge wondering why she kept on getting their phone calls. Feel the professionalism
The WBU are only amateurs anyway. The WBN are the premier world title organisation:

Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
To me this is another nail in the coffin. Willie Limond claiming to be world champ is a joke. He's been stopped twice at domestic level and has never beaten a world class opponent. He's just beaten 17-6-2 Ryan Barrett to pick up a meanlingless belt.
Yes, on planet WBU he's a "world champion".
Meanwhile, on planet earth, the finest lightweight boxers include Juan Manuel Marquez, Joan Guzman and Edwin Valero. They've probably never heard of Limond, because they operate in completely different circles. They're at the highest level, true world class lightweights.
Lets say you drive a clapped out old banger. Just because you attach a Mercedes badge to it, doesn't make it a Mercedes. The WBU is a bit like that.... its got no credibility in itself, but it attaches the phrase "world champion" to its belts and because that concept has become so diluted within the sport of boxing, they can legally get away with it. That doesn't make it right though.
I've nothing against Willie Limond but he's not a world champion. He's not even in the top five in Britain at lightweight.

I read your article about the alphabet organisations last year, and I must say it was a very informative and good read. Top work.steve689 wrote:I always tell this story when false organisations are involved but I think it's worthy of being recycled again.

Limond deserves it even though its not a good world title but it will get his rating up to fight for a real world title

Re: Wille Limon World Champion farce
Not at all sure how winning the WBU title will do his rating any good. It may help him with his confidence though. The problem is calling himself a World champion when the World doesnt recognize the title. Hatton defended the WBU title many times but never called himself the World champion until he beat Tsyzu. I thought WBU titles were now a thing of the past, they certainly should be. Scottish champion for me means much more.alexpaterson wrote:Limond deserves it even though its not a good world title but it will get his rating up to fight for a real world title
