A friend of mine from Hackney was talking about Matthews and his lifestyle not so long back. I think it's safe to say we'll never see him back in the ring.
Met Jason a few times through a good mate of mine Ian Cooper. The pair boxed for England together in the mid 1990s and are sadly both in the Big House at the moment. Such a shame as both are sound lads who have plenty of talent.
Well remember the night he put Rhodes on his face. He was unbeatable that night, fighting just a few days after the death of his mum. His post-fight interview was very moving.
Such a shame it all went downhill from there. He worked at a local college and seemed to have his head screwed on. But as a guard at Rahway once said: "those you swear will screw up on the outside, never come back, and those you swear will never come back, screw up."

I remember reading an interview with him in Boxing News a few years ago and thinking how sound he seemed - wasn't he doing some sort of social/care work? Given that it's with genuine sadness that I read the above article.
