The main embarrassment of the night was Sonny Bill Williams beating up on a short arsed street fighter. Proved nothing.

vincephillips wrote:ben k, i agree with some of what you say, his dad was very good as were all the sands boys. lionel rose was a great fighter. i was simply trying to state that he has not gone down the same path as many of his peers. i also think that anthony in time will go down as one of the greatest boxers our country has produced.
i dont think anyone on this post has been racist towards anthony in anyway and i can see how some of the things he says can frustrate people.
im just saying that he is a great talent often misunderstood and as boxing fans we should get behind him. some things he has said are stupid no doubt but you can also not deny his talent
I hear what your saying. But I don't know if he will ever make the top tier of aussie fighters. Unless he has a few more big wins.

Guys like Rose won Titles when there were only 8 World champions. Mundine hasn't been more than top 3 in the divisions he has fought in. If Mundine went to the US and beat Pavlik then he would be in that class.

Honestly though im sure he will ditch the IBO strap and move up to fight Green.

On the rumour mill going around at the moment .......A local IBO representatives says that Mundine is far more marketable for them and will brush over the standover tactics of Mundines thugs. Mundine's team forced/pressured the IBO to let Derek Millham do the judging even though he is not a IBO judge. Also note he only gave Daniel 4 rounds. Put 2 and 2 together and you get 4, you don't have to be Ablert Einstein to see what might be going on.

i think you have missed the point ,vincephillips, i said he was a disgrace to all the other aboriginal fighters who have gone before him, meaning his ring behavoir, what the man does outside the ring is his business, and those fighters you mentionedcould still hold their heads high as far as their records go, did mundine beat anyone in the top ten of the recognised world title divisions, and this is his first world title.you gave the other fighters a bit of a roast, wasn,t phillips into the funny gear?all the best

Admittedly I post as I read, but what you said was a bit silly... someone naming themselves after an Aussie-conqueror being "inflammatory". Really. Just because you and he became pally afterwards doesn't change your original indignation.

And yes, here we go again. I say something that goes against the grain of the board, so I'm a troll. No, I'm expressing an opinion. If you object to freedom of speech, move to China.

yeah, that's me...... real pally....whatever the fornicate that means. Your inability to see the context of the username in this forum and the manner in which the poster opines is interesting. I would have thought a self-proclaimed boxing expert would be able to deduce the issue that i have with the name. Oh well, i overestimted someone again...common thing for me i'm afraid.

I'm not sure what you are like on the british forum, but i see the method in which you post here. You post an opinion.... yes. A valid one...... maybe, one that is perpetually negative towards Australian Boxing and those that choose to post here.... definately.

BTW, I'm not look for advice on where my travels should take me. If i did I'd asked my wife. At least she has earnt the right to tell me where to go, you on the other hand, have not.

OK, I'll try to keep it civil. Perhaps you'll disagree, but I do like to keep things civil, and "a perpetually negative" attitude does not mean I do not.

First point... sorry, I quite honestly did not deduce the issue about "vincephillips". Yes, I am aware he is named after a boxer who holds a KO win over an Aussie folk hero. That in itself should not make his presence inflammatory, should it? Foreign boxers all over the world can and do beat other nations' popular boxers, and so long as it is done fairly and squarely, there should be no malice held towards that boxer or his fans - and yes, people can become fans of the boxers who beat their heroes. For example, Manny Pacquaio has a great many British fans. What is "the context of the username in this forum"? It's not exactly someone logging on to a 9/11 rememberance site with the username "osamarules"... It's boxing, one of the most multinational sports in the world. Fans are allowed to like boxers from other countries, you know, even if they have beaten one of your own!

Furthermore, "vincephillips" was standing up for Mundine, allegedly because he knows the guy. This is against the grain of most when it comes to Mundine, but seems to have been accepted as fair comment in this thread. But that's all I can see as far as "deducing the issue" goes. Likes Phillips (an Aussie-conqueror), likes Mundine (an Aussie villain). So what?? (Sorry if I'm missing something here, I'm just asking...)

Second point... me and my "perpetually negative attitude" towards Aussie boxing. I have defended my position many times. I am not automatically negative about Aussie boxing. The only thing I can understand that annoys people is that I sometimes point out how Aussie fans can go overboard with their appraisals of their fighters. Of course all nationalities do this, including my own, but to point this out as a neutral does not mean I have any kind of agenda. At other times I have praised where it's due, or at least post constructively about certain topics - but much the same as "good news is no news", it's only the perceived negative posts that get pounced on, and thus remembered.

While I'd be the first to say his WBA ranking is way too high, I'd also love to see him as HW champ. First of all, he's an exciting banger - what's not to like? He's a hell of a lot more fun to watch than Valuev, Chagaev and Ruiz. And secondly, he deserves it after being messed around and left to stagnate.

I would like to say Oliver, although you have been negative IMO in the past, and you and Toppity go at it like two true gentlemen duelling to defends one honour, it's always good to have more people posting here.

But...... you have to admit, you didn't have to defend Vince Phillips, he's a big boy and it certainly wasn't your fight nor was it your right to instantly pigeon hole Australians for being over sensitive.

Just saying, you could post here without pointing at people nationallitys all the time. :TU:

OK, and thanks for being gentlemanly yourself! :)

I wasn't standing up for "vincephillips", I was just commenting on that one particular Toppity post, and I stand by my position that Toppity's reaction to an, ahem, "inflammatory" username was over-sensitive - unless it's something I just don't get, in which case please fill me in.

Point taken about the pigeonholing, but certainly a fair portion of this board do not take kindly to opposing viewpoints, let's put it that way.

Finally, it's hard not to mention nationalities when it's a nation-specific board!

Again, I take your points on board, especially as you have put them in a mature manner. I may have rubbed some people up the wrong way on occasion but I'm only saying what I see. Again, it's just opinions, and for those who care to look, I've expressed positive ones too.

What riles me in return is the suggestion that I have some sort of bias or an agenda or even worse, that I'm a troll. If I'm guilty of anything, it's of rising to the bait when others call me out, but for what it's worth, I much prefer discussing and debating in a friendly manner. I'm sure any one of us can think of examples where threads have gone terribly downhill with insults and threats and so on and they do nobody any favours. I will not go down that route.

Hounddawg, I know you and I have been at opposite ends on occasion too, but I appreciate the manner of this post :TU:

I couldn't care less who else said it, I think he is a goose for claiming to be the best fighter out of here. The best sportsman in Aus history.
Most of the guys who do claim to be the best are at least willing to test themselves against the best.

Ive always said Mundine has talent etc. But talent will only get you so far and shitting on the Aussie public will never ever win you fans. :TU:

ollie, ollie, ollie. I didn't realise you cared that much. tbh, that's a great post...and don't call me pally. I couldn't come up with that much text last time i tried to justify a drunk all nighter to my wife via text.

With regard to Vince's name, here goes. I'll try to keep my opinion...my perspective simple. I don't have to of course as it is mine after all. But in this instance i will share.

The poster known as vince phillips pretty much only post here...the aussie forum. Not the off topic...not current scene....here. His name seems to have some pre-boxrec origin...but he posts here. Your boxing brain tells you that Vince beat Kostya....so why come to post on the aussie forum with a user name that some, perhaps even most, aussies dislike. I'll dumb it down a little further. Imagine being on a gentlemens club chat room with the user name Germaine Greer. You are not there to make polite conversation.

I don't want to dwell on this as i believe that I now understand the poster known as Vince well enough to be able to appreciate his input better. And the Dawg is right...all perspectives are required to make the board what it is.

i do concede that perpetually negative may have been a little too definitive. I'll revise my opinion to persistently negative.

Now i bid you goodbye to go and bask in queensland's glory (via proxy)
