Which City has PRODUCED the BEST fighters???

WHICH CITY IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD HAS PRODUCED more great quality fighters and world champions???

I think this is a tough one to call.

If you are going by population compared to quality fighters then it's Canastota New York, where the Hall of Fame is located. Canastota is a village of two or three thousand but it produced champs Carmen Basilio and his nephew Billy Backus as well as welterweight top ten Dick Di Veronica.

in reguards to "produced" i assume you mean where they were born,
but as far as "produced" one could take it as where they really gained there expierence and there talent.
in those surcumscances you should have las vegas as a option in your poll
alot of good fighters have moved from all over to train in vegas because of the deep sparring they have in there gyms down there.

Depends on the era too. Buffalo, NY during the 1920's aways had 5 or 6 boxers in the top ten across the 8 divisions. Also produced three world champions during that time. Many champions (Dempsey, Mandel, Greb, etc.) trained or fought regular there too.

Well, even if I we put Las Vegas, NV as home of some great champions, that city cannot cope nor compare with Philadelphia or New York. Philadelphia for me (The City of Brotherly Love) is the best when it comes to homegrown boxing talent: Bennie Briscoe, Matthew Saad Muhammad, Tommy Loughran, Bernard Hopkins, Joe Frazier, etc. Ah!!! Don't forget Rocky Balboa!!!----JUST KIDDING!!!

The problem is defining "produced". Does that mean grew up there, learned to fight there, had pro bouts there or lived there? Lots of greats learned to fight on the streets where they grew up. Others, strictly in the gym or some even in the military. where do we locate them. Two more cities I'd add to the list of candidates: Panama City, Panama and San Juan, PR.

thats my point,
i believe "produced" means where they "LEARNED" to fight,
theres nothing in the water, or food or in the air in a certain place that makes you a better boxer at birth, sure tuffer neighborhoods make you tuffer but its really in the gym that you work out in and sparring,
and every one knows if you dont make the olympic team,
then the next thing you do is go to a elite gym -ny, philly, detroit,
LAS VEGAS
to get world class sparring, thats all im saying.....ELMER,
possably im wrong, but, i dont remember anyone leaving the states as a amateur to travel to japan to go pro to get the elite sparring....
if im wrong, then you give me 20 examples

Youngstown, Ohio is another good fight town for it's size (80,000 according to an internet search)

All I'm saying is the best city that has produced the best fighters. Maybe I had to put this way: The best city where the best fighters grew up and represent.

For example: We all know that the great Joe Frazier was born in South Carolina, but as a teen-ager, he grew up in Philadelphia, PA and make it his home. Frazier is synonimous with Philadelphia.

Other examples: The great Evander Holyfield was born in Alabama, but grew up and represent Atlanta, GA for life. The great Roberto Duran was born in Guarare, Panama but grew up and represented Panama City, Panama. Las Vegas had some fighters but the only ones that I can remember are Greg Haugen and Roger Mayweather. But Mayweather was originally from Cedar Rapids, MI.

I gave Philadelphia the nod: Others that came to my mind were Meldrick Taylor, Willie Watts, Jeff Chandler, Gil Turner, George Benton, Len Matthews and William Guthrie. I also think Bob Satterfield came from Philly, SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG
