Danny's career path?

Post by dondada »

OK, put yourself in Danny Williams' shoes. Who would you like your next two fights to be against and why?

Also, who would you want to most avoid, and why?

Well, he shouldn't be messing around with the WBU title for starters. Danny's big in the States right now and the WBU title has zero credibility there. It has zero credibility here, so what is the point! Williams-Maskaev is a good match decimated by the billing. I mean that.

But don't you think Maskaev is a little bit of an anti-climax? Wasn't the conclusion of the Tyson shock win that Danny can perform very well when not expected to win? Why put him in against someone half-decent with Danny starting as a big favourite? For not a huge amount of money?

I just don't get it. Unless it's to keep him busy before a really big one, naturally. Then again, if it happens, Danny SHOULD win.

He is popular in the States and I'd like to see him fight for a world title. The winner of Golota-Ruiz in February in London?

Well, we all know Warren is unable to deliver the big name opponents any more. He got Tyson for Danny but only because Tyson's team thought they had got a real patsy for half the price of Kevin McBride. The plan is for Danny to win the WBU title (though it's no sure thing), then defend against all the heavyweights in the Sports Newtwork camp over the next couple of years. How else is Warren going to keep them busy? Yes, inbetween, we'll get the Hattonesque talk of Vitali Klitschko and James Toney for Danny, but talk is all it will be.

I'd rather see Danny keeping busy than waiting around for Tyson's "injury" to heal. Presuming that he can't get a shot at Vitali straight away, i'd like too see him in with one of the fairly well known fringe contenders like Oquendo, Barrett, Guinn, or Jirov (if he's definitely going to stay at heavy). If he comes through a fight with one of the guys in the same bracket as the ones i've named (and let's face it they're all beatable), then i'd like to see him get a shot at either Ruiz or Vitali. Preferably Ruiz.

As for people to avoid, i'd go for Rahman (may be faded, but he could still land a big enough shot on Danny), Holyfield (i don't want to see him beaten up again), and Byrd (he'd just frustrate Danny i think).

As far as I know, Vitali has nothing lined up for his next defence and in the immediate aftermath of the Tyson win, we were told that SN were going to try and make this fight. What I fear is him fighting some of the names you mentioned early on and blowing it. Bye bye chance of a proper world title shot.

The only reason I would avoid Rahman and Holyfield is that they are no longer credible opponents. You know what? I think Byrd is on the wane...but he is tied up with Big Jameel in November.

You only have to look at how its gone for Hatton and Calzaghe over the last couple of years to see that bennie's pessimistic prognosis has legs.

I really hope he is wrong.

I believe Vitali is going to fight monte barret next.
Williams can "do a rahman", he can make big money over the next couple of years by being billed as "the guy that KO'd tyson".
Rahman did this after fighting Lewis, he picked up a nice paycheck for the re-match then three more hefty paychecks fighting holly, ruiz and a past best Tua (recording 0-2-1).
Danny can make some mega bucks over the next 12 months and the fights shouldnt be too hard to make.... lets hope he drops this stupid WBU idea though!!

What he needs to do is fight someone at or very near the top. Simple as that. I pray we don't see an attempt to rack up another load of WBU defences because a man like Danny, who feels it is his destiny to get to the top, will regret it.

The only point in fighting old, shot fighters is for money. If that is your priority, fine. I actually don't think it is Danny's priority. He's a bit more old school.

Fight 1= Evander Holyfield. A big name, easily beatable, would give him a good 5 or 6 million EASY. Also would whack on a couple of million asking price for a fight with Vit Klit.

Fight 2= Vitali Klit. The biggest name out there, would get hammered, but would get a wicked bit of money out it, and could grab a few more now he's beaten Tyson and Holyfield and could retire on it with a big smile on his face.

Oleg Maskaev for WBU title, my arse.

Agree with fight 2. I've just had a look at the WBC ratings. Dan is no 10 - Rahman is 4 and Mesi is no 1. Danny would mullah either of these, though Mesi has documented problems and probably wouldn't want to risk his position.

although fighting older fighters (holly) may not be as advantageous it'll give danny another name on his record and a couple of mil in the bank. It'll also give him larger stock and bargaining power.
In reality danny probably wont beat the top guys so why risk loosing to one and being back under frankies wing fighting at york hall againt sprott.... take on maskaev and beat him, then do a number on holly and go looking for someone like toney.
IMO Toney is well overated in the HW division so a win over him would really put danny in the big time mix.

In an ideal world I would love to see Danny challenge James Toney. Unfortunately Toney is scheduled against Rydell Booker and also I don't think James Toney is ranked by the WBU :-?

Disagree with your Holy point, mate. Yes, it might give him money but I honestly don't think it would help his bargaining power one chip. Holy is universally regarded as shot. And there are very few heavys I wouldn't give Danny a chance against. My point is, try and get a shot against someone at or near the top. If he wins, great. If he loses, he has made a lot of money, tried to succeed and he will still be the man who beat Tyson.

Fights against Harrison, Skelton, Sprott and the Maskaevs of this world will still be there if he gets beat against a top man. He should strike while the iron is hottest.

I think the maskaev fight is a fair one to take so soon, then.... personally id go holly then klit or try for toney / byrd / ruiz wlthough i think the ruiz and byrd fights would be horror shows to watch.

Maskaev isn't a bad option given that the current champs are busy (Vitali vs Barrett, Ruiz vs Golota, Byrd vs McCline/King, Brewster vs Mehaan). Also, as Tyson is in rehab he is not available.

However, Maskaev shouldn't be for a title but Williams' last fight before another major fight with one of those mentioned above. Personally, I think Byrd is ready to be taken and Williams is more than capable - many see him as the #1 champion given his win over Vitali, so it is the best option for him.

However, I am inclined to believe Bennie on the likely outcome, I only hope that US TV might put more pressure than they are doing with Hatton. Warren is not wrong is saying the Williams is now one of the biggest attractions in the blue ribbon devision. He is now more well known than Hatton, so maybe the British media might put pressure for a big fight.

I do worry about this WBU title that is on the line.

Ruiz/Golota winner or Brewster/Maheen winner. Maskaev is a good fight to keep the ball rolling.

I would definetely wanna see Williams fight Rahman, it would be a good fight, although I would probably lean towards Rahman winning a late. I still think Rahman is very underated these days, he is top 5 in the world in my opinion.

Holyfield (November) and Tyson II (February 05).

Money and noteriety.

The on to Ruiz, Brewster etc in 05 would have been my path.

Well we have this lawsuit pending, which potentially could keep Danny out of the ring, which would be a disaster. There are claims from boxingtalk that the fight isn't made, but that's not the most reliable of sources....

No statement from Danny as yet, and until we hear something, we just won't know.

The heavyweight picture is so convoluted at the moment. Danny can tread water against Holyfield and take a rematch with Tyson. I would give Tyson a chance in a rematch to be honest, great performance as it was, I don't think Tyson was that far from stopping him in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

Will Tyson really want to face Danny again though, he doesn't exactly have the greatest rematch record in the world. I tend to think that a fighter who has his number, has his number, at least in Mike's mind.
