1978: Duran vs Arguello...Who would've won???

Post by elmersalsa »

Hello Folks!!!

This fight was about to happen in 1978, but after Arguello's 10-round decision loss to crafty Dominican contender Vilomar Fernandez, the fight never happened.

who would have won and why at 135 pounds??? Duran at his peak and Arguello just won the jr lightweight crown from Alfredo Escalera. No matter how many rounds this one last, to me it would've been a classic!!!

A great fight I think but Duran had the edge in speed and ferocity and I can see a peak Duran stopping Arguello after about 12 rounds.... Arguello would just find Roberto to strong and too fast.......

Duran would get inside in the same fashion Pryor would do in '82. At his peak, duran's quickness would have been too much for Arguello to handle. Still, it would have made an attractive match. Maybe with a victory, Duran would stay at 135 or go to 140 and face Pryor. That would have been a match to see.

Of this fight I have a question: Did Arguello ducked Duran by letting himself get beat by Vilomar Fernandez, or was it a legitimate victory for the Dominican contender???

Remember, Fernandez was a Duran's 13th round KO victim in 1977. A year before this fight (Arguello-Fernandez I) happened.

No I don't think so, Fernandez was just too fast for Arguello.... but the loss may well have made Arguello think again about facing Duran... which you can't blame him for really!.

Duran would have really punished Arguello and stopped him late. Duran was only vulnerable to movers and Arguello, for all his talents, wasn't a mover.
In a way, it was a blessing for Arguello this fight didn't happen. Duran at lightweight was someone to be avoided.

I totally agree with this post. Nothing to add.
