Oliver, to try and get a better perspective of why some aussie fans are critical of Anthony Mundine, try and get a hold of the audio of an interview he did on a local Koori radio station this week.

Thank you for the benevolent gesture of explaining it further ;)

In itself, I maintain that naming yourself after a boxer who beat an Aussie is not malicious. (Shall I reincarnate as "azumahnelson"? ;)) I just don't see how. Did the real Phillips commit some kind of crime by beating your guy? Anyway, it seems you do know more about the identity and history of this poster, so will leave it at that.

Re. Mundine... I'm well aware of his "character" and I'm no fan of it, and even though I share an admiration of his skills with most of you, he's frustrated me by squandering it through his 30s. Now, if people are criticising him for his political comments or his matchmaking or even his bragging, then fair enough. Admittedly he has legitimately earned a lot if not most of the flak that comes his way. But a dedicated post about him flexing his biceps like Roy Jones? Come on, there are bigger things to worry about!

As an American fight fan, here's my take on Mundine. He lost to Ottke and Kessler. He's now trying to make it down to MW because he is not quite world champion quality against SMWs, which is a pretty strong division, but he might be in the MW division, which appears a bit thinner. Pavlik is being questioned now after his loss to Hopkins, and Abraham has some flashy KOs but hasn't beaten anyone better than Miranda and generally is unproven. Obviously Mundine's 9/11 comments were stupid if he's trying to build a fan base in the US, but plenty of people here voiced all sorts of crazy stuff about 9/11, from we brought it on ourselves to the government conspiracy silliness. We are used to it. We have lots of crazy people here, and they are allowed to say crazy stuff, have outlandish opinions, and still have a job or make a living. I would like to see him come over here and fight at least once, and I don't think the 9/11 stuff will matter much. I'd much rather see Pavlik-Mundine than Pavlik-Mora. In fact, Id' rather see Pavlik Abrahanm and then Mundine-Mora.

an update

By Ray Wheatley — World of Boxing

Bill Treacy, manager of former IBO middleweight champion Daniel Geale who lost the title to Anthony Mundine last Wednesday by a disputed twelve round split decision, will lodge a protest to the IBO regarding the intimidation by members of the Mundine camp of English boxing judge Marcus McDonell during the contest. McDonnell scored the bout 114-113 to Mundine and Rich Green of the USA scored 115-112 to Geale. Australian judge Derek Milham scored 116-113 for Mundine. McDonnell confirmed to The Sunday Telegraph that he was subjected to verbal abuse. McDonnell said, “For the future, judges of IBO title fights featuring Mundine need to be protected. We should not have people standing behind us calling us names. Luckily - I am a thick skinned pom.” It was generally considered that Geale had deserved a clear decision over the former WBA super middleweight champion Mundine, who has stated he is after a WBA shot against German Felix Sturm.

not sure if i agree with Ray on that point.

Yeah, I haven't seen the fight, but I was under the impression it was "generally considered" a fight that could have gone either way, perhaps with a slight lean towards Choc, and that's even among anti-Mundine observers.

I gave it to Mundine by 1 round. Which actually equated to the kd in the 2nd round. Could have gone either way

You want to know the real reason people dont belive Mundine won the fight..it's the old Australian way of if its a clean fight and both the boys fight to there fullest and a decision is made to give the fight to a fighter even if its close it must be a Fair Honest Fight!!! You could never be number 1 in the world if you have to use tactic the way mundine and his camp did on wensday night..Let alone they would never get away with it any where else in the world in title fight... and by that admission Geale won the fight..

(A) Geale boxed to his finest and use no dirty tactic to win the fight.. just use his skill..

(B) Mundine has no skill other than being fast and using a jab.. Had to use dirty tactics to win.

(C) How many people belive that the chinesse swimming team used there swimming skills to win gold... How does Chinesse Swimmers have any thing to do with boxing you ask well nothing but when yr a cheat you get no respect and you will never be remembed as a sporting great.. And the real reason why mundine doesn't want to fight Geale again is he knows he lost and if he did have to fighting him again he "Mundine" knows he will be beaten.
