HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
HBO apparently not interested in Klitschko versus Chagaev.
So says Shelly Finkel.

Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Then HBO are fools. Klit Vs Chagaev wouldn't be as good as if Haye was facing the chinny giant, but Chagaev is a top fighter, who could beat Wlad. And it would be for the ring belt, plus THREE other world title, as well as the IBO belt.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
I wonder if this fight needs HBO to take place though? I've read there is alot of money involved in the german boxing scene alone.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
The story including Finkel's quotes can be found on the BS.com site
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Isn't Sturm fighting on the 11th of July. That would be like having Hatton and Calzaghe fighting on different bills at the same time.
Hope it doesn't happen then, mainly because I will be away withOUT!!!! Setanta and will miss it.
A week or two later would prove that there is a God.

It's WCB, not PPV, so not much.Neri wrote:I wonder if this fight needs HBO to take place though? I've read there is alot of money involved in the german boxing scene alone.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
klit v ibrag was a pile of you know what. chag is better than ibrag but his fights keep getting called off due to health issues and he's not been active. chag is an effing liability.
Klischko vs Chagaev on according to Shelly Finkel.
Shelly Finkel now saying on BS.com that Klitschko vs Chagaev is a done deal for June 20th. No HBO.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Looks like the germany trip will be worth it after all.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
HBO are right to stick to the same "high quality only" policy that brought us classics like Lacy-Taylor and Trinidad-Jones Jnr.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Klitschko's manager Boente says Chagaev has been verbally agreed for 20th June and contracts will now be exchanged.
It's on.

Yeah they televise all the shit fights Klitschko has been in over the last couple of years and now he's involved in one for the Ring Heavyweight title against a guy thought of very highly and the WBA champion and they back out from it.steve689 wrote:HBO are right to stick to the same "high quality only" policy that brought us classics like Lacy-Taylor and Trinidad-Jones Jnr.

Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Wladimir Klitschko vs. Ruslan Chagaev is on.
The fighters have agreed in terms to fight for the vacant RING magazine heavyweight championship on June 20, the same day Klitschko was supposed to fight David Haye, Klitschko’s manager told RingTV.com. The venue also remains the same, a 60,000-seat soccer stadium in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
Only two formal steps remain: the lawyers' approval and the fighters’ signatures.
“There are no further obstacles,” Bernd Bönte said. “We’ll exchange contracts probably tomorrow but we’ve agreed to the numbers. There are no further problems.”
Haye pulled out of the fight on Wednesday with a back injury. Chagaev was scheduled to fight Nikolai Valuev last Saturday in Finland but was shown to have a hepatitis B antigen in his system and was not allowed to fight.
Nigel Collins, Editor-in-Chief of THE RING magazine, also confirmed that Klitschko, rated No. 1, and No. 3 Chagaev will fight for the championship.
“THE RING magazine will recognize the upcoming bout between Wladimir Klitschko and Ruslan Chagaev as being for the vacant RING heavyweight championship of the world,” Collins said. “Usually, we require a match between the No. 1 and No. 2 contenders to fill a vacancy. But in certain circumstances, we will recognize a match between No. 1 and No. 3, and this is one of those circumstances.
“Wladimir is THE RING’s No. 1 heavyweight contender, and his participation is mandatory, but as the No. 2 contender is his brother, Vitali, and the brothers have stated many times that they will never fight, a match between Wladimir and No. 3 contender Chagaev meets THE RING’s criterion.”
The agreement is a relief to Klitschko and his camp.
They considered Haye’s request to postpone the fight until July 11 but decided it was too risky. Had they agreed and Haye still hadn’t recovered, Klitschko would’ve had to wait months for his next fight.
Now, neither Klitschko nor a crowd expected to approach the 60,000 limit will be left hanging.
“Are we relieved? Absolutely,” Bönte said. “The alternative would’ve been to postpone the fight for three weeks. We considered it but Haye could’ve come back and said he has back problems again. Then we would’ve had to wait until after summer vacation. Wladimir might not have fought again until September.
“Everyone on the team is very happy that this fight is on.”
The Klitschko-Haye fight, which probably was more attractive universally than Klitschko-Chagaev because of Haye's charisma, was to be televised by HBO in the U.S. However, HBO has rejected the new pairing, according to BS.com.
Almost certainly another network will pick up the fight here.
The Klitschko-Chagaev matchup is unusual in that the replacement fighter is more-accomplished – and perhaps better -- than the original opponent.
Haye is a former crusierweight champion but has fought over the cruiserweight limit of 200 pounds only four times. Chagaev (25-0-1, 17 knockouts) is the WBA’s heavyweight “champion in recess” and a former two-time world amateur champion.
Plus, he’s left-handed. Klitschko had been preparing for an orthodox opponent in Haye.
“I think this opponent is even better (than Haye),” Bönte said. “He’s a world champion, he’s unbeaten. He’s beaten guys like (John) Ruiz and Valuev. He was a top amateur, a former amateur world champion. He even beat Felix Savon, the three-time Olympic champion.
“This is a big challenge. I think you see that Wladimir isn’t afraid to fight anyone – even on short notice. I think it shows his class.”
Bönte also said that the THE RING championship adds luster to the event. Klitschko vs. Haye was not for the THE RING title.
“Wladimir told me that he’s absolutely thrilled that this is for THE RING championship, especially because the last one to hold that title was his brother, Vitali, before he retired,” Bönte said.
Chagaev, an Ukbek who lives in Hamburg, Germany, has fought the majority of his fights in his adopted country. Bönte said the postitive test for the hepatitis B antigen in Finland won’t stand in the way of this fight.
“A doctor in Berlin, at one of the most-reputable hospitals in the world, was asked by a journalist after the fight with Valuev was called off whether someone could be infected by Chagaev,” Bönte said. “He was told the chances were as high as you walking out of your home and having the sky fall on your head.
“Plus, Wladimir has been inoculated against hepatitis. That’s normal for youngsters in Europe.”
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Andre Berto vs Juan Urango made Dawson/Tarver 2 seem like Foreman/Lyle!HBO are right to stick to the same "high quality only" policy that brought us classics like Lacy-Taylor and Trinidad-Jones Jnr.
Its SHOCKING that HBO are not interested in The RING Heavyweight Championship Fight!
Klitschko - Chagaev is great News for the Heavyweight Division especially as we are getting Vitali Klitschko vs Valuev soon too which will mean just 2 Heavyweight Champions by the end of the Year.
Than in 2010
We have Wlad Fight Haye and Vitali Fight Arreola and one or Both of the Bro's lose than we could have ARREOLA vs HAYE for the Undisputed World Heavyweight Championship in the Summer of 2010 :)
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Prob more to do with options, they prob aren't confident that Klit will win
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
This is a great heavyweight fight...( i mean in that division what else is there???)
Two Olympic gold medallists....
Chagaev, i am 99.9% certain, wont go and bottle it like most of Wlads challengers.

Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Wonder if Haye will attend, or at least be in the Setanta studio.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
Haye's doctor advised that David would be fit to fight by July 25th at the earliest. That date though was not suitable for German broadcaster RTL. Richard Shaefer (CEO of Golden Boy Promotions) believes that this was enough to prompt the decision to go with Chagaev instead.
Shaefer says that the priority is to get David back in the ring as soon as possible.

Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
It seems like it's gonna be a long road to the top now for Haye, especially if Chagaev wins. I don't see him being nearly as accomodating as Klitschko in terms of a voluntary defense. Haye's quickest route to the top now is big bro, but that's a tough fight for him. I was confident he could beat Wlad, but Vitali is a different story.

Personally not surprised. This will be Ibragimov II. "Paint the fence, Wald. Paint the fence."
Plus it's at a shit time of the day for them.

i could almost imagine the promo spots for wlad-chagaev on HBO..."see wlad fight a late sub who just got rejected for his original HW title challenge because he is a latent hepatitis carrier!!"![]()
then for the prefight close-up features they could show "highlights" of chagaev eking out narrow decision wins over valuev & john ruiz, who is another guy HBO has managed to avoid for the 4+ years since he stunk out the place vs toney!!
i always hate to see ANY fight cancelled & i am delighted that both wlad & chagaev get to prevent an unprecedented double HW disaster of 2 world title fight cancellations in a 3-week timespan...just dont expect HBO to play along!! it presented them with a convenient opportunity to avoid the expense of a questionable overseas venture during an economic crunch...the risk/reward issue prevented it from working!! having it sandwiched between a WCB matchup of cotto-clottey on 6/13 & BAD card on 6/27 with john-juarez+ortiz-maidana would have given it all the appeal of a mayonnaise sandwich...
Great post.
Re: HBO not interested in Klitschko - Chagaev.
They showed Klit versus Ray Austin and Tony Thompson yet turn this unification against an unbeaten opponent down?? Home of Boxing my Ring (magazine)!
The fact they showed Jones Jnr V Trinidad still annoys me. That fight epitomised much of what is wrong with Boxing. I'm surprised they didn't pick up Nelson V Fenech III and Maske V Del Valle II as well![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)

Its going to be an awful fight - gutted for David Haye and more sad for the fans who have shelled out so much money!!!
