Reason I ask is that I would like to read about the history of great amateurs and their fight records.

Also, why does boxrec not include amateur records?

usaboxing.org is good for USA boxing news... amateurboxing.com by Melanie Ley (the grandmother of Amateur boxing, lol) is pretty good and has a nice Q&A style forum to help out amateurs.
