Braddock was never a Cinderella Man in reality. He could always fight but gave away a lot of weight before he grew into a proper heavy and showed all his strength and boxing skills against Max Baer, who only clowned and fooled around in the fight because he knew, after failing to budge Braddock in the early rounds, that he was going to lose. Plus, Braddock put Joe Louis on his arse before losing the title. Louis had to give Braddock a percentage of all his future purses to get the shot, thus gazumping Max Schmeling, who had knocked out Louis, of course.
Louis went on to make 25 defences.

Watched the first hour as it started at 11:05 in Wales, then went to bed. Great film - how accurate is it, such as the title fight at one days notice etc... ?

It is directed by Ron Howard of Happy Days fame (Cunningham). Say no more, really.Wales wrote:Watched the first hour as it started at 11:05 in Wales, then went to bed. Great film - how accurate is it, such as the title fight at one days notice etc... ?

Max Baer was a great guy and a great puncher. His stoppage of Max Schmeling, in the tenth round, is often overlooked and he lived life as it should be lived: with a smile on his face.
In the midst of a fatal heart attack in 1959, he called down to the hotel lobby and asked for a doctor. "The house doctor?" enquired the receptionist. "No," cracked Max, "the people doctor."
Bringing a smile right to the end.

Joey Giardello, by the way, sued after the 1999 film "The Hurricane". Giardello defended his world middleweight belt against Rubin Carter on a unanimous, clearcut decision in Philadelphia in 1964, yet the movie, starring Denzel Washington, portrayed Carter hammering Giardello in the fight and the decision as a robbery and as racially motivated (Giardello was white).
Said Giardello: "I was the type of fighter who liked to win for my family, and for something like that to happen, it hurt. He was just another guy. It was just a regular fight."
He launched a defamation lawsuit and eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed sum, said to be worth millions. Joey died last year. He had a fighting record of 101-25-7.

Ron Howard is a director who manages to make tense real life situations (Apollo 13, Cinderella Man) and make it as exciting as a grey room. Neither film had anyone on the edge of their seats , even if you knew what was going to happen, and in both stories there was fantastic edge of seat stuff in real life.
Re: Cinderella Man - BBC1 10.35 tonight
Want the main problem with the film "the hurricane" the fact Carter was infact a complete pudendum who did the things alleged, and more? In a nutshell.

Cinderella Man is an ok film, nothing special but then again films based on true stories rarely are special because we know the story. ![[icon_knockout.gif] :KO:](./images/smilies/icon_knockout.gif)
