Best boxing film????
Re: Best boxing film????
ROCKY films are not so good, the original included. It's sentimental, wish fulfilment, emotionally manipulative.
FAT CITY, by John Huston, is perhaps the best boxing film. Not the kind of film that will have you shadow boxing in the mirror wearing only your underpants, and drinking raw eggs when you get up for the day. Most ppl aren't winners and aren't successful, and this gets into that side.
I also love the bare knuckle drama, starring Liam Neeson, which goes under a couple of different titles, THE BIG MAN and CROSSING THE LINE. Ian Bannen as a real nasty, smarmy operator who arranges the fights. While not exactly boxing, Neeson's character trains in a boxing gym.
As a lad, I enjoyed the moody & violent GLADIATOR, which kicks off with Seal's Killer. Brian Dennessy and Robert Loggia are great as the seedy promoter and manager; and a nice performance by Ossie Davis as the old school trainer. A bit of urban misery to go with the melodrama, and good performances by James Marshall (from Twin Peaks) and Cuba Gooding Jr. Still, it's formulaic stuff.
I'll have to give HOMEBOY another look.

- Somebody up there likes me - brilliant film.
- Rocky 1, 2, 3, 4 and Rocky Balboa
- The Champ
- The Boxer was not bad, but not really about boxing, though Day Lewis was brilliant as usual. McGuigann trained him for a year and stated that he made so much progress that he would have easily held his own against decent British Middleweights at the time. Method acting at its best.
- Million Dollar Baby, not bad but once again, not completely based on boxing
- On the Waterfront
Hopefully Shane Meadows will get round to making the bio on Bartley Gorman. Not sumuch a boxing film, but a film about a local legend and bare knuckle fighting.

The Great White Hype is one of my faviurite films of all time. If they had just gotten the white boxer to 20-0 or something similar it would have been even better
Re: Best boxing film????
All Rocky's (loved Rocky Balboa)
Gladiator was pretty good.
Raging Bull was the biz.
Having said that I loved the Tyson & Don King HBO movies so what do I know.

Streets of Gold is worth checking out. Wesley Snipes is in that. He and Adrian Pasdar are inner city toughs who get trained by a former Soviet amateur coach. Not available on DVD sadly.

Gladiator is a good film, but its about 15 years since I watched it.
And dull though it proved, Will Smith does a passable facsimile of Ali in that film.

I agree, great film and Bogart is fantastic and it is loosely based on Primo Carnera . Some great bits of how they did it in the old days, chicken wire in the gums...Flashing Blade wrote:The Harder they Fall is very entertaining
Story of a foreign heavyweight controlled by the mafia who climbs up the ranks in rigged matches. The actor looks like Primo Carnera and he eventually he fights the real Max Baer. Jersey Joe Walcott plays his trainer and Bogart is the washed up hacked hired to look after him. Great stuff.

Surprised to read that as I thought it was excellent. Superb performance by Hillary Swank.Flashing Blade wrote:Million Dollar Baby is the worst film ever to win an Oscar.
As for my own personal faves, it's Raging Bull by a country mile, followed by Rocky's I, II and III. Also enjoyed Gladiator and Streets of Gold in the enjoyable trash sense
Re: Best boxing film????
Also an honorable mention for that UK made-for-TV documentary that I think was just called 'Fighters' - featured Bradley Stone, Jimmy Flint etc. Must be about 20 years old now and remember people on here had mixed feelings about it, but I really enjoyed it.
