Bumfights - the movie

I was watching the documentary on CH5 last night about this (and other films like it), did anyone else see it or have you seen the film itself?

I guess my opinion on it reflects my age (26). I certainly didn't think there was anything cool about it but at the same time I wasn't appalled or offended either. It does concern me though that so many people around the world would go out of their way to obtain a copy of this shite.

Totally agree Kil, I think if I was younger I may have found it amusing in some way, I dunno at the end of the day it is exploitation of the homeless but equally so, these guys were happy to be exploited themselves.

What did annoy me was the wanky director who was trying to make out it was some kind of pseudo trendy friggin peice of art on the plight of the homeless. Errr NO!

What a tosser, it isnt its you and a bunch of mates taking the piss out of the town hobboes in return for getting them arsoled. I have to say I found the tatoo thing totally out of order but 200 bucks is a weeks drinking to someone like that. Very sad when you think about it I suppose.

My feeling is its totally wrong but theres worse shit that goes on in the world that should get more of our attention than this dribble.!!! (the video not the thread!

I actually have a copy of the original Bumfights film in it's entirety. A friend of my brother downloaded it and made several copies for his mates, one of which ended up with me.

I've only watched the film once (maybe about two years ago), and i found it extremely degrading for those that took part. There isn't a single moment during the whole thing that made me even consider smiling. How anyone can find amusement in the belittling of those less fortunate than themselves is beyond me. Sadly both my brother and his friends found it to be highly entertaining, and i'm sure that there are many who feel the same way.

On hearing about the documentary i searched the house for the CD, to see if it was really as bad as i remembered. I found it at the very bottom of a cardboard box in my brothers room, covered in dust. This morning i tried to play the thing on my PC. It didn't work, which is probably for the best.

I'd like to get hold of the middle class mummies boys who made it and show them how to fight.

yes I agree GM, but these people are choosing to degrade themselves also. i dont get the impression that they are being forced into this.

I agree it is quite sad.

Im guessing your brother is younger than you right? To the 19 year old with less of a social conscience this might just be seen as "Jackass" taken a step further.

Which in itself might be a sad reflection on society but I cant sit here whiter than white, in our day it was video nasties, porn or whatever was the present kick, IU seem to remember when I was bout 17 there was a particularly sick video "called faces of death" or similar, which was majorly fucked up but as a kid curiosity gets the better of you. Its the nature of being a teenager mate Im afraid.

My brother is smart enough to know better though. Which is something that i told him once i'd seen the thing.

As for the people being willing to degrade themselves, i'm not sure that's entirely true. In most of the scenes the participants are either drunk, drugged up to the eyes or had mental defiencies. The makers of the film knew exactly what they were doing by targeting those who couldn't refuse the drink or the money that was on offer.

If you want i'll send you the CD and you can judge for yourself, but it's my opinion that for the most degrading parts of the video the participants are less than willing. If not forced, then tricked or coerced.

that program was well interesting. Part of me enjoys watching stuff like that..but it is well out of order and some of it taken too far. That 311 thing was just wrong when they chased that kid.

but i will download the original bum fights cause for concern...purely out of curiousity.

thanks for the offer but no thanks Ive seen enough fucked up shit in my life without dwelling on this.

I only saw the programme last night half asleep so maybe Im not the best to judge. Its a sad fact of human nature that if there are people there to be exploited, there will be other people there to exploit them.

Im not sure that career drop outs (the two guys in the video had been alkys for 30 years or more for whatever reasons) are top of my sympathy lists, do you have the same sympathy for porn stars or prostitutes who are hooked on skag and being exploited? Its no different really.

I know that sounds callous but when theres mass genocide like Sudan happening in the world, I feel that ionnocents and children are more worthy of my empathy and money in some cases, I dont have enough sympathy to go around Im afraid. I guess thats my failing but Im honest enough to admit it.

I have copies of both the first and second bumfights dvd's, didnt buy 'em just got given them by a guy i sometimes get dvd's off...

watched them both, both are morally wrong, both are shocking but there we go, thats life. as the previous poster says worse things are going on.
On the actual bumfights dvd a lot of footage is camcorder footage of young kids (teenagers) fighting although some of the homeless people footage is quite bad. Interesting to see one fo the homeless guys ghad dried out and was in re-hab.

Did anyone ever see that documentary a couple of years back about a hostel for homeless drunks in east London? I think it was called "The Wet House" or "The Bath House".

It was pretty depressing stuff watching them all shouting/laughing at eachother but one particular bit had me cracking up. The hostel doctor was making his usual weekly visit to check up on the inhabitants, and this big fat bloke sits down and starts telling the doctor about how for a few days he's been feeling pain in his chest and he doesn't know why. So the doc gets the old stethoscope out and starts checking around but finds nothing unusual. Then he gets the guy to lift up his arm and there on his side you see the biggest eff-off bruise in history, where he'd fallen over and not remembered. It was as much of a surprise to the "patient" as it was to the doctor. I was in stitches.

My sentiments exactly KA. These twats are morally repugnant and an inevitable product of the moral values American (and eventually British) societies promote.

A more basic view is that they are a bunch of juvenile arseholes who would learn a massive and important lesson from having several buckets of shit kicked out of them. I'm sure plenty here would join me in the queue to do it.

Dirty Sanchez is a piss poor imitation of Jackass. Both of them are funny for a while, but it's like watching chimps dressed as humans, a novelty which soon wears thinner than a porn stars foreskin.

Bumfights is basically a more extreme version of Jackass (as someone said above) from what I saw in the previews.

Jackass is funny in places but anything that involves laughs from extreme pain I don't like.

And the person (knockout artist i think) who said it this sort of stuff is produced by middle class mummy boys is spot on. Watching Bam Margera on Jackass punching his huge dad as hard as he can without him willing to hit back pisses me off and it's all for laughs

.

On another occasion he painted all of his mother's kitchen blue - the teapot, the fridge, the food, everything. It wouldn't be funny if a 5 year old did it!

Jackass and Dirty Sanchez are hilarious. Sanchez is an imitation, but at least takes it onto the next level....most of their stuff is more 'hardcore' than what the Jackass boys do.

If you get pleasure from watching extreme pain (often the pain is achieved in a sexual manner) then Dirty Sanchez is for you.
