Honeyghan - Vaca

Post by medic »

Broncano, on the Honeyghan-Vaca fight you entered, 10/28/87, you show the ref as Hank Elespuru, I show Larry O'Connell. I would expect the BBB of C would use at least one British official, and I also show Elespuru as working 12 days prior on 10/16/87 in Sydney on the Jeff Fenech fight. I left it for your decision.

Medic, sorry I missed this..

My source for that information was Ring Magazine's March 1988 issue. Ron Olver's 3 column fight report on page 21-22 states the following:
(...) two judges voted for Vaca, one for Honeyghan, after referee Henry Elespuru of the United States had deducted a point from Honeyghan's total for the accidental headbut(...)

Bob Yalen has been keeping detailed records of all title fights since at least 1985 -- check back of Ring Record Book for that year. Can't recall if he started earlier.

Fight Fax publishes his yearly compilation in their book. IBRO members usually get a copy also, through the IBRO Journal.

I wold think that Bob's list is as good as any source since he compiles from official records only. And, to tell you the truth -- I ahve yet to find an error in his work.

His list compiles detailed info on each fight -- refs/judges etc. He also includes the scoring of a bout by round/judge up to the time of kayo.

An absolutely invaluable, well-done research document that seems never to get mentioned, but is one of the longest-running, important pieces of boxing research over the past 2 decades.

Yalen's result shows the ref as Hank Elespuru with the judges being
Chuck Hassett (USA) 65-67, Bob Logist (Belgium) 66-67 and Malcolm Bulner (Australia) 67-65.

I can't argue the point. You might be right. I show the same judges and scores. My information has been sitting in a file for years and maybe I made a mistake transcribing the info from a tape. Sorry.
