Damn... 3 US Olympians down. I thought Allen would do well.emile wrote:Georgiev got beaten pretty handily by Paschuk in the quarterfinals. But then Pashchuk beat Blain and lost in the final to Maletin by walkover, so that may not have been a bad loss at all. Shame Pashchuk couldn't fight.
Man, 30-10. 17-3 after two rounds, the battle was o-vah.
Rock ALLEN (USA) – Loser of Bout 137
On the bout:
"Early in the fight I thought I could not get into the contest. By the second round I felt I was getting better, but each time I got close to GEORGIEV, he countered and moved away again."
Boris GEORGIEV (BUL) – Winner of Bout 137
On his win:
"I am feeling excellent. This was a victory and I am very happy. I believe I can win a medal, but this is the Olympic Games and no one knows what will happen at the end."

Wooo, Saitov in rough right now with the Egyptian Hekal. 13-13 in the third. I think those who predicted he was finished are going to be proven right. He may win this round, but it looks like Teofilio and Felix are not being tied this year.

Well, you have to say Rock Allen was taken to school by Georgiev, even dropped by a nice counter right in the first.
Sublime skills by Jhonson, he's gonna take some beating. Mamuhdov looked good though, but I think the Cuban has the beating of him.
Styles make fights, and I think Willy Blain beats Maletin 8 out of 10.
It's looking like a Blain-Jhonson final I reckon.
Husanov is a fighter I really like and he can beat Saitov, but will he get it?

Their is some serious fucked up shit going on with these Eygptian (sp?) boxers, they are getting gifts. Im convinced their is some corruption going on here. Its not even debatable anymore.
Blains out, he just didn't perform, he didn't know how to box on the front foot. Vargas is also gone he completely gassed, he had some favours from the ref as well, it could have been a wider loss.

What a joke just watched the Australian/Egyption 91kgs fight and yes i'm Australian but no I don't think the Aussie would have won but how many warnings can a fighter get for holding and ducking and not lose a point but worse of all how could the Aussie boxer score a clean punch? He even had a punch that wobbled the Egyptions knees and still didn't score a point for it
No wonder they lose most of the best fighters to the pro ranks so soon.

Does anybody know if they still name outstanding boxer of the game and if it is official or is it just sportswriters? I remember Nino Benvenuti was at the 1960 games but don't know any others.
If they still do it, my vote dso far goes to Rigondeaux. Shut out his russian opponent, a silver WC and gold EC, for two rounds and won 20-5. His is totally dominant and outclasses his opponents. Tajbert is my runner-up, he has been a pleasant surprise.

They do still name it, Jirov won it in 96. Roy Jones in 88. Saitov won it in 2000 I think. Oscar probably won it in 92, or maybe Casamayor.
Rigondeaux would make a very good pro, maybe a Pernell Whitaker type although I think he has a lot more power than Whitaker, he's very solidly built.
Tajberts got power, when he's allowed to tape his hands up in the pro's he's gonna hit even harder.

Amir Khan destroys his Korean opponent in the 1st round. He draws the Korean foward then nails him with a big right hand on the chin that drops the Korean, he takes the count then the ref calls it off after the finishing flurry from Khan, stunning win for 17 year old Khan over a world quarter finalist and now a guaranteed broze medal. The first stoppage of its kind in the tournament and the earliest.
Amazing by Khan. I am a believer now.
Also, giant thumbs-up to Oakland's Andre Ward, who beat Makarenko and is now the favorite to win the 81kg gold medal. Ward has almost single-handedly saved the US Boxing Team from total embarrasment with his win.
He is definitely one to watch for the future.
Also, consider Odlanier Solis for the outstanding boxer. He was freaking amazing against the outclassed Venezuelan. Having already beaten Alexseev, he will look fantastic in winning his next two fights as well. He's listed at 5-11 (although all the Cubans seem to be billed as being way too short), but I think if he could, he would be a heavyweight champion prospect. Only 24, and shows defensive skills and punching angles most heavyweights only dream of.
