I love this argument. Rarely are you granted the opportunity to watch otherwise intelligent posters, make complete f@ckwits of themselves

what, are you trying to say that UFC fighters can have great striking skills? they're too muscled, they expect to be rolling around on the floor. it's bollocks that cross training has enabled fighters to have great ground AND striking game.
ex kickboxer maurice smith was a good striker i recall, destroyed a gracie grappler with a side kick to the head.
Yes, ofcourse they can have great striking styles... and many do. Just because it doesn't look aesthetically like traditional boxing, doesn't mean it's not effective striking. At risk of sounding patronising, you need to understand the ranges involved. Standing in the traditional boxing range in mma would get you beaten pretty sharpish... so fighters generally stand back a little, hence punches look a little more telegraphed and winged. Fighters still get knocked out with crisp, clean punches. Next you'll be saying that mma fighters have genetically weaker chins than boxers or some other such sh1te...
As for it being bollocks that cross training has enabled fighters to have a great stand up and ground game - what a naive, ill informed (if at all informed) statement. Yes, some fighters are predominently strikers, and some are grapplers... and often fighters will stick to what they know. But then you have guys who are truly superb at all facets of the game... and as mma grows, this is becoming the case more often. Anderson Silva is one of the best strikers in the game, but also a BJJ black belt...
"
People being too muscled because they expect to be rolling around on the floor".... what? Are you for real?? With the greatest of respect Autobarn - this kind of shows just how little understanding you have.
Here's a pic of Damien Maia.... probably the best BJJ practitioner to ever fight in the UFC. Too muscled because he expects to be rolling around on the floor?
Regarding your final statement...
ex kickboxer maurice smith was a good striker i recall, destroyed a gracie grappler with a side kick to the head. I don't even see what relevance that has to anything? Yes, grapplers can be beaten.... ofcourse they can - no one is arguing any different.
Autobarn.... you're a good, intelligent poster. I understand you choosing not to like, or watch MMA... but you're making a fool of yourself by trying to debate a subject which quite frankly you know nothing about. If you don't want to watch (evidently not) then don't bother, but if you're going to jump on the mma bashing bandwagon because of a freak result, then at least bring an argument you've actually thought a little about, rather than clutching at straws and repeating cliches we hear all to often from idiots who haven't watched any mma since it's introduction to the masses in the late 90's.
