Cotto - a true champion

Post by jamesmcdonnell »

I've admired Cotto for a long time. He's just got so much raw guts in him. He was having a terribly time against Clottey, the cut was a real bad one, and he clearly couldn't see half the time - but he bit down on his gumshield and just did enough to win.

Clottey fought a good fight, but Cotto just deserved the nod, he stole the last two rounds and clinched it.

Clottey deserves a rematch, but cut aside, I think that Cotto will beat him quite clearly if they fight again.

Top marks to Cotto for pulling that one out of the bag, the mark of a great champion. You can't look sensational every time, sometimes you have to do just enough to win.

Definetly when other fighters may of quit he kept going with that nasty cut boxed well when he was tired and took Clottey's best shots showed he's definetly moved on from the Marg defeat and is better for that fight he didnt rush in when he had Clottey against the ropes he conservided his energy much better this fight he also boxed really well and deserves his victory

Only worry for me is that he's been badly banged up in recent fights. He's going to have a terrible scar from that cut he sustained, and has always had a tendency to mark up. I think he is going to be involved in quite a few hard fights from here on in. I'd like to see him have a couple of easy ones to be honest before he takes on one of the big boys.

I dont see why he would need an easy fight before a big one I would like to see him take a while out of the ring definetly not fight again this year and then fight a big name a rematch with Mosely or a rematch with Clottey or Pac they are all possibilitys but ye he gets cut up real easy but he has great determination

Have to hand it to cotto he could have quite after the 4th and still won but he went on , theres no doubt the cut affected him. I was worried at stages that it was turning into a beat down like the margo fight but clottey seemed to let up and cotto survived

Well I think he would be better staying busy, he needs to be sharp to fight those guys. Cotto's style demands quite sharp boxing at times and a lot of lateral movement, so I think he's better off staying active.

I would like to see a rematch with Margarito as his next big fight.

I would also like to see him in a fight with Hatton at some point.

I hope he gets revenge on Marg at some point I like Cotto he can box he can fight he has a great heart he has a good chin he has decent power I think he would take Marg and he would Mosely in a rematch think PBF would be to slick for him but there are so many fights out there for him Berto, Clottey, Margarito, Mosley, Pacquiao, Marquez, Mayweather

Hatton would be destroyed in that fight, maybe not as quick as the pacman fight but he would get badly beaten.

It would probably have to be either a catchweight fight or have a fighting weight rule, to even the odds.

If Hatton can win a Light Welterweight title before a fight with Cotto then I think it would be a good fight to make.

Cotto's got a good chin, hits hard, is a natural lefty (so can easily switch stances), has a massive heart, is economical with his punches, is massive come fight-night. If Hatton versus Cotto were to happen, I would really fear for Ricky's health.

Have to agree - I was really impressed with Cotto - coming into this fight there could have been a big confidence problem - then the cut happened - I thought Cotto would unravel but he didn't and that shows what he is made of.

Hatton can't compete with Cotto/Clottey/Pacman/Marquez/PBF/ and I could go further but you get my point.

Hatton isn't strong enough, skillful enough and doesn't hit hard enough to trouble Cotto IMO.

he's alright, he has quality, but seems to be missing something, probably stamina.

i think the puerto rican super bantam, juan manuel lopez, has more ability, more power (p4p), more presence and just looks overall better.

Cotto would be a big favourite, but Hatton can definitely give Cotto trouble.

If a catchweight fight is arranged Hatton would have a good chance at beating him.

Clottey was only successful because of the cut really. It sickened Cotto and wore him down. Clottey is the most disappointing fighter around right now - opportunities to dominate the final two rounds and, even though Cotto used his superior talent to keep Clottey from engaging, Clottey looked content to sit back and let Cotto box. what an ass.

Cotto showed great heart in there. I have to say I scored the fight for Clottey who for me, but have no complaints.

A little concerning for Cotto in the future that he opted to box and move in the last few rounds. He looked gassed to me. It worked a treat as it befuddled Clottey a bit, but he doesn't look invinsible anymore.

When he first moved up to Welter destroying Quintana, he looked unstopable to me. Now though it looks like that aura has gone. To see Cotto take his foot off the gas and allow Clottey to back him up (after he just had Clottey on the ropes) was alarming.

I am sure all the Welterweights will be chomping at the bit to fight him. Clottey showed some spirit in there also, I thought the ref was a tad harsh on Clottey asking him to continue after he was clearly in some agony.

Actually hes the polar opposite of a true champion, hes holding a belt despite being ko'd 2 fights ago and not avenging it or rematching the man who beat Marg either. Plus myself and many others had Clottey winning a hard fought decision. He outlanded Cotto by 50punches, blocked most of Cottos shots and had Cotto in retreat for the last 6 rounds.

Saying he is the polar opposite of a true champion is ridiculous. Cotto made his first defence of his WBO title against one of the best fighters in the division in what should have been a unification fight. Margarito is still in disgrace after being caught cheating, so to expect Cotto to have already rematched Margarito is unfair.

Cotto's next fight is likely to be against Pacquiao, which is another very tough fight. These are not the actions of a false champion.

i was mixed about it meself.

for 6 rds cotto was awesome.

but u had the feeling that if he was fighting margarito again he wouldn't have got away with it. :shame:

bad cut to the eye and cotto's corner should have bullshitted the doctor when things were getting tougher.

credit to em and they stuck it out.

cotto-pac is a wicked fight.

just a slight shame that mayweather-pac won't be closing out the decade. :(

Terry D wrote:Didn't think much of the fight. Clottey does not deserve a rematch. It was close and the title was in his sights but he gave away the last two rounds, tried to get points deducted from his opponent, and generally acted like an idiot for the final 2-3 rounds or so. I would rather Oedipus my own eyes than watch a return.

One guy covered in blood very slowly moving around while another guy throws himself to the floor and cries a bit is my idea of a slasher flick, not a boxing match. Cotto should move onto a Manny fight, on Saturday's evidence it will be like shooting fish in a bathtub for Manny.
if that had been a british boxer he would be getting serious stick for the running round the ring like that. :D
