the maurice smith point was that he was a striker first and foremost, having done world class kickboxing, and then when he could get his shots off without being taken down, the other guy was in dreamland
Ok, fair enough :TU:

Regarding world class striking abilities - it depends how you define them. World class boxing ability, and world class striking ability are two very seperate things. Boxing is striking within a very strict set of rules. You could argue that world class "striking" in it's truest form would include every facet of the striking game, elbows, knees, kicks in addition to punches. By that token, world class boxing ability, is actually quite limited when compared to say a Muay Thai fighter.

As for the Maurice Smith comment, that's part of the intrique and interest of mma - the clash of styles, and how a pure striker would fare against a pure grappler for example. With fighters training as they do now, they're generally well skilled in every aspect of the game - but just as some boxers are counter-punchers/bangers etc, mma fighters also tend to lean towards certain skill sets etc, so you still get classic striker vs grappler battles - the only difference from 10yrs ago now is that these guys are much much better at what would traditionally have been the weaker part of their game.

If all the fights you've seen have involved meatheads and Hulk Hogan types, you're watching the wrong shows, or have been very unfortunate in the fights you've caught :TU:

We always see people commenting on here about how they can't have a serious debate with their mates about boxing, as their friends know f@ck all, but presume because they've seen highlights on youtube or read Frank Warrens column they're genius's when a fights on at the pub. The boxing vs mma debates on this board are much the same to be honest... a bunch of boxing fans who have little to no knowledge of the subject they're trying to debate, yet will jump on the bandwagon because it's the cool thing to do, they don't understand the sport so presume it's evil incarnate, or perhaps see it as a threat to boxing and therefore try to defend something they love. Either way... if people are seriously going to try and debate the topic, they should at least know something about the sport and its participants, and the fights they're using as examples.

As I said... we read all the time from posters on here about how they can't have serious boxing conversation with their pals or the blokes down the pub because their ill informed opinions are based solely on what's printed in The Sun, or hyped on Sky Sports. I think the same goes for mma fans trying to debate this with most fans of boxing.

EDIT: Autobarn, I should add, the last couple of paragraphs aren't directed at you - but some of the other posters on this board who seem completely incapable of a rational debate :TU:

God damn Mercer gets older and older as this fight gets talked about, isnt he? He's 48, but in this thread he's 50, in current scene he's 60, next he'll be like Joe Louis in that barber shop scene and be 175 years old.

yeah, in the MMA the fights are unpredictable, you don't know what's going to happen - such as Smith kicking Conan Silviera's head in - and they tend to be evenly matched. Also I believe they are geared toward younger viewers with perhaps a much shorter attention span. MMA, to me, seems like, "fights as long as a quick shag".

It would be strange if a boxer or an MMA fighter could change sports, successfully. Not only due to differences in striking and grappling, but also in pacing - top boxers tend to have poise, patience, and gradually implement a steady game plan, whereas MMA can be pretty instant, short burst kind of stuff.

PS, did Marco Ruas and Rickson/Royce Gracie ever settle who was Brazi's "King of the Streets"? Granted, I am asking about 10 years too late.

Yes, generally (at least in the big, well regulated promotions) you tend to get much more evenly matched fights, and perhaps more importantly with just a few exceptions (e.g Fedor) the best fighters do fight each other...

I don't think it's a lesser attention span etc, more just that the UFC especially (and mma as a whole has benefited from this) has targetted a very specific demographic and performed an incredible marketing job over the past few years, building an huge brand from something that was on the edge of being outlawed not so long ago.

As with boxing, you get some fighters who go in without a specific plan as such, and just fight to their strengths etc - but a lot of fighters can now visibly be seen working a gameplan, and talking about it intelligently before/after fights...

I'd love to see a really world class boxer make the transition, but it's not something thats really likely - not with a fighter in his prime, at least. They'd have to take considerable time away from boxing to train the other facets of mma just to be competetive - and the risk for them would be huge. If they were already at a serious level in boxing, it would make no sense for them to deny themselves future earnings in the ring, by transitioning to a sport where they could lose one fight badly and then both careers are over. I'd say the sort of guy most likely to be able to make the move successfully would be an American pro with a very good college wrestling background...

It doesn't really compare to todays MMA, but Art Jimmerson fought Royce at UFC1 and it was all over pretty sharpish. At the time he was an IBF Top 10 Light Heavy... he also thought it would be a good idea to wear one, yes 1, boxing glove :o

Royce and Ruas didn't fight to my knowledge in any of the major promotions/shows...

I think we should remember what Duran always used to say: 'I'd kick his ass on the street.'

Tyson would've probably lost to some of the MMA guys towards the end of his career because the chosen rules would've favoured the grappler. But on the street Tyson could bite his way out of a lot of trouble; he'd have options.

In the ring a Muay Thai fighter should beat a boxer of similar weight and skill. It's like putting an F1 car up against an IndyCar: circuit or oval? I personally feel that the elite boxers throughout history have been the better raw talents.

The question is not 'which is the best style' - that's street fighting, but 'who is the best in their field'.

Eddie,

I disagree with you a dadge on the boxing debate with guys down the pub and comparing it to the debate boxing fans on here.

I cannot get into MMA, given it a try but it aint my thing, and quite rightly got a bashing from some of the posters when I questioned the overall skill level of some of the MMA in comparison to boxing. However, guys in the pub will not only debate with you who will win Klitchsko or Bruno, but will not say "okay, I don't know what I am talking about now" and will actually talk like people who will see all of HBO/ESPN/Showtime/sky/setanta's fights. They are not comparing sport for sport, they talk like a fan of boxing.

What I think its more comparable is a Rugby Union fan talking about Rugby League.... the only thing I have done when discussing MMA is try to compare it to Boxing, and thats really the only thing I can do with Rugby League (compare it to Union). I couldn't tell you whose the best Rugby League player in the world and nothing about the technical aspects of the game.... but I could make possibly sweeping generalisations with Rugby Union, and possibly get lambasted for it.... but I wouldn't be talking as a fan, well only a fan of Union.

The pub goers all talk about Boxing more enthusiastically than they do football, even though they know so much more about football... thats the frustrating thing (well for me anyway).

No real surprise here at all.

A basic demonstration of the only way a boxer can win in an MMA bout, an early, well placed shot. If they dont find that punch, and get taken down, they're fooked.

The fact that a 50 year old ex world champ was able to find that shot against an upright lumbering oaf in Sylvia is no shocker, apart from having the reflexes of a sloth, he's pretty much considered one of the most underwhelming UFC champs in recent memory. Once an exciting, crude slugger who managed to pick up a decent enough ground game to stay competitive until he got manhandled by an ancient Couture and then smashed to pieces by Fedor.

yeah i think that was UFC 1 - jimmerson - anonymous cruiserweight v royce, top jiu jutsu expert. crap matchmaking (or then again, GREAT matchmaking). but then again, probably an unknown cruiser is the type of guy with less to lose.

Cheers dude :TU: Every once in a while us blood-thirsty, beer fueled, anti-social steroid pumped mma fans manage to string a sentence together ;;-) :DD

It's all in good fun anyway... if people aren't fans and don't want to watch it, thats cool. I don't want to convert anyone.. but it'd be nice if people at least had a little respect and understanding of the sport and its participants.

Stu - I see what you're saying, and perhaps yours was a better analogy, but I think you get my point - the confidence with which people argue their case, and their out right refusal to accept any other outcome - despite having little to no understanding of what they're debating. Again, that's not aimed at you, or Autobarn either... as you'll both actually engage in a debate about this - more some of the people on here who'll make one post slagging it off, and then either never been seen again, or flatly refuse to acknowledge a different opinion :TU:

hahahaha, this thread is classic....

Anyway my worthless opinion is as follows....

I love Ray Mercer the guy was a mega talent won the olympics only two years after lacing up gloves for the first time... what a guy....

Anyway Tim Sylvia from what i have seen ( maybe 5 fights) is one of the most one dimensional MMA fighters I have even seen. Most of his fights were him standing there throwing jab right hand. Jab right hand. The dude is 6'8, he isnt gonna be able to perform Kurt Angle type takedowns, but he has long arms and a decent dig

Put him in there with a once great boxer with a decent gameplan and you can see where it was heading, especially when he came in at 300lbs..

As others have said that match means very little.

MMA fighters have done that to Sylvia and he has been gone from the UFC for months. At 311, he was 44 pounds over the UFC's weight limit. The only think it tells me is that Sylvia sucks.

The MMA v Boxing argument has been done to death. It's like Valentino Rossi claiming Chris Hoy is rubbish because Motorcycling is better than Cycling.

FYI i started this thread to celebrate the God-like entity that is Merciless Ray Mercer, conqueror of Lennox Lewis, slayer of Tommy Morrison, swiller of copious amounts of beer.

I had no idea it would descend into an emotional battle over boxing v MMA.

God bless you for that.... Ray is a 100% legitimate bad ass.....
Who else could start boxing at age 25/26 and have such an incredible amateur/pro boxing career!

I love the fact that in the Sylvia match Mercer went for the take down after his right hand detonated on Tim's chin...I dont think he realised Tim was GONE.

Lets Get this RIGHT

Mercer hasn't been a Top 10 Heavyweight for over 10 Years now, his last good performance was way Back in 1996 against Lennox Lewis and his last SIGNIFICANT WIN was waaaaaaaaaay back in 1991 against Tommy Morrison which is 18 years AGO!

Also RAY MERCER was never a WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION.....Holy fornicate the WBO belt meant DIDDLY FUKIN SQUAT back in 1991 plus he never had anything more than Medium to Good Heavyweight Power and was never a Killer with his Fists in terms of 1 punch Power!

Now on to TIM SYLVIA..... This Guy aint no BUM according to UFC. He is only the 2nd Man in UFC History to win back the UFC Heavyweight Belt and according to MMA fans, UFC is the best of the best plus he was last CHAMPION in 2007 so is still close to his BEST!

Now can u imagine what REAL KILLERS in Heavyweight Boxing would do with 4oz Gloves....I'm talkin about those Heavyweights who can't Hack it anymore at the Top Level in Boxing like OLIVER McCall, HASIM RAHMAN, DAVID TUA and SHANNON BRIGGS.......FUKIN HELL......There would be DE-FUCKIN-CAPITATIONS if one of them HIT a MMA fighter FLUSH which lets face wouldnt be that Hard to do!

There are quite a few interesting points being made in this topic !

Few things though,

1. Sylvia was basically a ufc champion by luck not skill. Everytime he had a fight with somone decent he lost. His recent fight with mercer wasnt in the ufc, sylvia left the ufc for a 2nd rate promotion a while ago and got ktfo, so it was in a 3rd rate promotion at best.

2. The ufc used to be all about ground work and i agree it used to get boring then. 2 grown men rolling around the floor does not make for exciting fights for the general non mma fans. The ufc have recently tried to address this though, as as such have brought in a lot of fighters who have a striking base style ( kick boxing, karate, etc ). In my opinion a decent kick boxer would have the advantage over a decent boxer. At least half of the fights i see are now ended by a ko, or tko.

This makes me wonder if a boxer just charged and started swinging off the bat, that any MMA guy would get kayoed....but then again...if that was the case, Botha, Phillips, Francis, Skelton, Butterbean and others who've tried it would have been greater successes than they were when they went into K-1 and other mma feds.

Yes you are right but the Boxers who have been chosen for MMA fights were very very carefully selected, Skelton was Kick boxer first so dosent count but if you look at the Best Boxers who have had MMA fights in Francis, Verno Philips, Arthur Williams, Mercer and Botha, they are all essentially counter punchers with limited striking power plus they were all Shot and over the Hill too!

Can u imagine if Guys like BRIGGS, McCALL, TUA and RAHMAN all went into MMA, they would ANNIHILATE 90% if not everyone of the competition just on their STRIKING SKILLS alone!
