Really? You didn't think it worthy of watching on the basis of watching someone prevail despite a serious injury? Strange attitude if you ask me.Terry D wrote:Didn't think much of the fight. Clottey does not deserve a rematch. It was close and the title was in his sights but he gave away the last two rounds, tried to get points deducted from his opponent, and generally acted like an idiot for the final 2-3 rounds or so. I would rather Oedipus my own eyes than watch a return.
One guy covered in blood very slowly moving around while another guy throws himself to the floor and cries a bit is my idea of a slasher flick, not a boxing match. Cotto should move onto a Manny fight, on Saturday's evidence it will be like shooting fish in a bathtub for Manny.

Although Terry, it wouldn't have made a difference had Clottey won those last two rounds.
I disagree that Clottey was looking for the DQ - he couldn't move properly for a round and half after that. He showed fantastic spirit IMO.
Although I agree with you, Cotto has lost something. He looked so gassed and he was controlling the pace early - which is a bad sign for the future.

Disagree with that, didnt think there was much wrong with him tbh. Big poof tried it on in the last round too... didnt see cotto complaining too much when the head went in in the third, granted accidental, but still it did split his head wide open.stujones wrote:

Yeah, I thought Clottey was clearly looking to have Cotto DQ'd when he went over, by pretending he couldn't continue.
When the referee hauled him off his arse - and it was clear he wasn't going to have a bar of it, he limped about a bit half heartedly and looked absolutely fine to me after that.
The reason he didn't move in the 6th is that Cotto buzzed him with a shot, and his legs weren't steady.
I think Cotto can be forgiven for backpedalling given the atrocious state of that cut.

Re: Cotto - a true champion
But Cotto conducts himself like a fearsome, cold blooded pressure fighter - has all the tools, wonderful punch delivery - and always spends rounds 8 and on sucking air and backing off.
This guy isn't as good as countryman Juanma Lopez, who has better power, better strength, better stamina (WBO 122-pound champ). I would argue Cotto doesn't rank with Puerto Rican greats such as Gomez, Benitez, or even the 2nd tier of PR greats like Edwin Rosario & Wilfredo Vazquez. Not yet anyway.
I was big on Cotto. I'd be more impressed if he beat a light middle or middle champ, though obviously he's sticking where the money is. This is sensible, unless he is weak making the weight and loses to Manny. If he loses to Manny, he will get some right stick.

Re: Cotto - a true champion
The point is he shouldn't be a champion in the first place, Mosley/Mayweather is the true champion of the division, beating Micheal Jennings does not make you 'a true world champion' in the first placeHorse wrote:Saying he is the polar opposite of a true champion is ridiculous. Cotto made his first defence of his WBO title against one of the best fighters in the division in what should have been a unification fight. Margarito is still in disgrace after being caught cheating, so to expect Cotto to have already rematched Margarito is unfair.Phenomenal-Nutrition wrote:Actually hes the polar opposite of a true champion, hes holding a belt despite being ko'd 2 fights ago and not avenging it or rematching the man who beat Marg either. Plus myself and many others had Clottey winning a hard fought decision. He outlanded Cotto by 50punches, blocked most of Cottos shots and had Cotto in retreat for the last 6 rounds.
Cotto's next fight is likely to be against Pacquiao, which is another very tough fight. These are not the actions of a false champion.
Re: Cotto - a true champion
yeah but he can't quite land a mayweather calibre of fight (and he already beat mosley). cotto doesn't command box office - not outside NY and Puerto Rico - and he presents several risks to mayweather, so he'd never get a fight like that.
can't fault him for picking up, what, 2 titles, WBO and IBF. obviously doesn't make him THE MAN, but is a decent way back i suppose.

Cotto is one of the best Welterweights in the world. Margarito has lost to Mosley, Mosley lost to Cotto, nobody is clearly dominant. If anyone it's Mosley right now.Autobarn wrote:yeah but he can't quite land a mayweather calibre of fight (and he already beat mosley). cotto doesn't command box office - not outside NY and Puerto Rico - and he presents several risks to mayweather, so he'd never get a fight like that.

So, bring on Mosley v Cotto rematch. If and when Margarito has served what should be a lengthy ban from top flight competition then perhaps he can have aniother go.
Shane looked so damned good against Margarito, but Cotto isn't static like Margarito - love to see if the second fight will be any different.

cotto would beat mosley again i'd think. no point going over that ground again.

Juanma is the real deal. My favourite fighter for sure. I was high on Cotto back when he was a prospect, but he has shown recently that he is just not as good as I thought. I really overrated his boxing ability and power.
I really think Pacman will do him because I think he's just too methodical to beat Pacman. Hes going to get mullered with punches, left right and centre. The key ingredient to beating Pacman is a good right hand you can lead with... Cotto doesn't have that.
I'm not disappointed with Cotto though, he has shown unbelievable heart every time and I respect that.

not sure about that, mosley beat the man who beat the man.Autobarn wrote:cotto would beat mosley again i'd think. no point going over that ground again.

Re: Cotto - a true champion
I thought Mosley fought Cotto like a guy who just wanted to give a good account, not someone with the belief he could win. Might be a different Shane next time.

i had it 7-5 cotto.
very competitive fight.
